liff Bayer's fencing coach rarely let him forget the exquisite timing and savvy ruses that make Sergei Goloubitski the world's premier foilist and an Olympic gold medal favorite. Yefim Litvan's praise of Goloubitski, a fellow Ukrainian, sounded to Bayer more like taunting than motivation. "It was like taking a knife and throwing it into my side," Bayer, 23, said recently in the basement training room of the New York Athletic Club. "During a lesson he'd say, 'Do like Sergei does; watch a tape of Sergei.' He was always relating to him like a godlike character." That is, until last August, when Bayer faced Goloubitski in the quarterfinals of a World Cup fencing tournament in St. Petersburg, Russia. It was their first encounter since Goloubitski trounced Bayer, then a junior, six years before. "He wins a lot with sheer intimidation," Bayer said. "He makes good fencers look like children because of his tricks. He sets up his opponents very well. He has a lot of patience. But when he started his mind games, I didn't listen, which is what he doesn't want you to do."

History
Fencing originated as the practice of swordsmanship to prepare men for duels and warfare. A fencing match is depicted on an Egyptian temple that dates to about 1190 B.C. and the ancient Babylonians, Greeks, Persians, and Romans all had some form of fencing. The use of armor during the Middle Ages made swordsmanship virtually obsolete. The broadsword was used against armor, but only as a crude hacking device requiring sheer strength rather than skill. By making armor obsolete, the development of firearms ironically brought swordplay back into prominence during the 15th century. Soldiers once again had to acquire some skill with the sword, and fencing also emerged as a pastime for gentlemen. Fencing masters organized guilds, which taught various moves to initiates while protecting them as trade secrets from outsiders. The swords of that period were rather heavy, and cutting the opponent with the edge was emphasized. Further, since the sword was frequently a weapon of defense against thieves, tactics included wrestling holds and tricks designed to disarm or immobilize the opponent to set him up for the killing blow. Fencing as an exercise based on speed and skill began when the longer, lighter rapier was developed in Italy during the 16th century. Because of the rapier's length, opponents had to fight at a distance and quick but controlled lunges, attacking the enemy with the point of the sword, replaced cruder hacking techniques. But the rapier wasn't a good defensive weapon, so the fencer often had to use his gauntleted left hand to parry his opponent's thrusts.

They threw baseball and softball out of the Olympics , the first games cut since rugby in '36. They will not be played in London in the 2012 games.
There has been talk in the past of cutting fencing from the games, citing poor attendance and practical untelivisability. (Is that a word?) I believe that it is European block alone that has kept fencing around (I know that most Americans don't give a care about fencing). Do you think that the sport will be cut soon? Why?

Plus American Fencers are getting alot better.
*ahem* oh sorry, did I laugh? didn't mean to. Yes, american fencers are getting better... but the problem is, it's not a national sport... whereas in france and italy, fencing is considered one of the 3 national sports.. There is also a difference in attitude (don't take this badly.. I know you all will) because Fencing, as you said, is an elitist sport in the US... But not in France! I have property in a small village of about 200 inhabitants that has a small gymnasium... and fencing is one of the very few sports that's taught in it on a weekly basis , so I can only deduce that people who fence in the US have a superior attitude... and the French guys don't... if you observed the olympics last year (in fencing), there was a frenchman got a broken sword right through his hand, and the american athlete was actually laughing at him, didn't apologise or anything, whereas (I have seen that same guy compete against a friend of mine) the frenchman will apologise if he hurts the other...... oh and btw, after a short break and a bandaged hand, the frenchman won against the american... don't underestimate the injured man!

Fencing

Fencing is one of only four sports to be included in every modern Olympic Games since the first one back in 1896. Competitors are well covered with protective clothing, which is a good job as the point of fencing is to hit people with swords. Those hits are measured electronically and the person with the most hits is the winner. Three different types of swords are used:
  • Foil - The lightest of the three swords used and the most difficult to use. Points can only be scored by striking the opponents torso with the tip. Only the attacking fencer can score, unless they miss, in which case the defender can do so.
  • Epee - Only a hit with the very end of the blade can score points, although a hit on the foot scores the same points as one to the face.
  • Sabre - The biggest of the three weapons, and any hit above the waist counts. This discipline is the most aggressive of the three.
Each bout is made up of three three-minute segments and the fencers compete on an area 14m long and 1.5m wide. Who are the British hopes?
