The history of fencing
By Travis Lowry Published: Tuesday, November 2, 2004 As long as humans have been on the planet, weapons whether for hunting or defensive purposes have existed in some form or another. From primitive clubs and spears evolved more sophisticated weapons such as swords with rise of Greek and Roman civilizations, which eventually led to what we know today as the art of fencing.
According to historical records, the earliest recorded evidence of practiced fencing was found in a relief cutting in a temple built by Ramses III around 1190 BC near Luxor in Upper Egypt. The cutting depicted two figures with weapons using safety precautions such wearing masks and using shields while brandishing weapons with covered points. Swordplay in Japan can also be traced back at least 5,000 years.
Before the year 1500, swords were primarily slashing, cutting weapons. After the fall of the Roman Empire in about 476 A.D. and in relation to the heavy, cumbersome armour that was commonly worn in war, weapons become heavier and more difficult to wield. Violence, brute force and fearsomeness were the primary characteristic needed to succeed in swordplay. The need for a lighter, swifter weapon to penetrate in between the joints in the armour and coats of mail in this period lead to the creation of the rapier. The rapier was a comparatively light offensive thrusting weapon, leaving defensive manoeuvres to the rear hand, which would carry a dagger or small sword of sorts to deflect blows. The three weapons used in fencing today, the foil, the épée and the sabre, are all descendents of the rapier used in present-day fencing.

Fencing
By SCOTT PURKS, Times Staff Writer Published August 8, 2004 ABOUT THE SPORT: The three weapon classes - foil, epee and sabre - are as different as their names. The foil (3 feet, 6 inches, 1.1 pounds) has a lightweight flexible blade with quick movements, while the epee (3-7, 1.7 pounds) is a more traditional fighting sword. The sabre (3-foot-5.3, a few ounces less than the foil) is characterized by slashing, thrusting motions and is known as a cutting weapon. Because of the different skills involved with each weapon, Olympic-level fencers generally choose to compete in one specialty. AMERICA'S BEST: An American woman never has won a medal, but that could change with the debut of the women's individual sabre. Sada Jacobson, 21, is ranked No.1 in the world in the event. Her 18-year-old sister, Emily, is 10th. Sada placed 12th at her first World Championship in 2001 and fifth at the 2002 and 2003 World Championships. At 17, Sada helped the U.S. women's sabre team win gold at the 2000 Sabre Worlds, the first fencing world championship by a U.S. team at any level.

Since 1926, the USC Fencing Team has proven to be a dominant force, winning numerous championships and representing the bold Trojan spirit. Although it has changed over the last three-quarters of a century, as athletes and coaches have come and gone, one aspect of the team has remained the same throughout its history: the dedication to the sport of fencing and to teaching its skills to all who seek to learn. The Early Years
The beginnings of the USC Fencing Team date back before its creation in 1926 to the initiation of Rufus B. von KleinSmid as the fifth President of the University of Southern California in 1921. Von KleinSmid was, among his many talents, a skilled fencer and an enthusiastic promoter of the sport. He received instruction on a regular basis at the Los Angeles Athletic Club (L.A.A.C.), an institution which is still in existence in its original location downtown. The fencing instructor at the Athletic Club was a Belgian fencing master by the name of Henry J. Uyttenhove

S wordfighting as a sport has existed since ancient Egyptian times and has been practised in many forms in various cultures since then. Although jousting and tournament combat were popular sports in the European middle ages, modern F.I.E. fencing owes more to the unarmoured duelling forms that evolved from 16th century rapier combat. Rapiers were edged having a military role for thrusting into chinks of heavy armour. The original Spanish school, under masters such as Narvaez and Thibault was steeped in technical precision requiring much practise to master. In the late 16th and early 17th centuries, rapier fencing spread to Italy and masters like Agrippa and Capo Ferro developed a more pragmatic school, introducing linear fencing and the lunge.
B y the 18th century the rapier had evolved to a shorter, lighter design, popularised in France, called the small sword or fleuret (due to the leather safety tip resembling a flower). The small sword often had an edge, to prevent the opponent from grabbing the blade, although the weapon was mainly used for thrusting. The light weight made a more complex and defensive style possible, and the French masters developed a school based on subtlety of movement, double-time parries and complex attacks. The small sword is identical to the modern foil.

  • Hundreds of years ago, around 1046, England was conquered by Denmark and occupied by the Danish. The English finally forced them out after many bloody battles. A few years later, an English boy was walking through an old battleground. He uncovered a Danish skull left over from England's war with Denmark and started kicking it around. A couple other boys joined him. But some of them hurt their feet on the skull, so they decided to use an inflated cow bladder. Other sources show that it led to soccer and rugby. In 1146, grown men were playing football. Sometimes there were more than one hundred players on the same team. Instead of helmets players grew their hair longer to protect their skulls from severe injuries. Rugby, starting as a part of football, was developed by William Webb Ellias in 1823 in college. Players were ordered not to play in town but in vacant fields because the sport was so violent. They established some rules and they agreed that both teams should have the same number of players, though usually the teams still had more than fifty players on a team.

Brief History of Fencing
History of Fencing - Where did it start? Swordfighting as sport has existed since ancient Egypt, and has been practiced in many forms in various cultures since then. Although jousting and tournament combat was a popular sport in the European middle ages, modern FIE fencing owes more to unarmoured dueling forms that evolved from 16th century rapier combat. Rapiers evolved from cut-and-thrust military swords, but were most popular amongst civilians who used it for self-defence and dueling. Rapiers were edged, but the primary means of attack was the thrust. Rapier fencing spread from Spain and Italy to northwest Europe, in spite of the objections of masters such as George Silver who preferred traditional cutting weapons such the English broad sword. The Spanish school, under masters such as Narvaez and Thibault, became a complicated and mystical affair whose geometrical theories required much practice to master. Italian masters like Agrippa and Capo Ferro developed a more pragmatic school in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, introducing innovations such as linear fencing and the lunge. By the 18th century, the rapier had evolved to a simpler, shorter, and lighter design that was popularized in France as the small sword. Although the small sword often had an edge, it was only to discourage the opponent from grabbing the blade, and the weapon was used exclusively for thrusting. The light weight made a more complex and defensive style possible, and the French masters developed a school based on defence with the sword, subtlety of movement, and complex attacks. When buttoned with a leather safety tip that resembled a flower bud, the small sword was known as le fleuret, and was identical in use to the modern foil (still known as le fleuret in French). Indeed, the French small sword school forms the basis of most of modern fencing theory.

OLYMPIC HISTORY France dominated fencing from the outset of the sport at the first Games in 1896, with Italy taking charge in the 1930s before Hungary made itself the nation to beat for half a century. Indeed, the Hungarians won all seven titles in the sabre team event between 1928 and 1960. Aladar Gerevich was a member of the team in all but one of those victories and his success at the age of 50 in Rome, in 1960, brought him a record which still stands: he is the Olympian with the most consecutive victories. One of the most famous early fencer was Nedo Nadi, from Italy. As an 18-year-old he won his first title in the foil in Stockholm, in 1912, when he also finished fifth in the sabre. War intervened but Nadi emerged from it a stronger fencer; at Antwerp in 1920, he won five of the six available gold medals, three of those with his team-mates. His victory in the sabre left his brother Aldo nursing the silver medal.

liff Bayer's fencing coach rarely let him forget the exquisite timing and savvy ruses that make Sergei Goloubitski the world's premier foilist and an Olympic gold medal favorite. Yefim Litvan's praise of Goloubitski, a fellow Ukrainian, sounded to Bayer more like taunting than motivation. "It was like taking a knife and throwing it into my side," Bayer, 23, said recently in the basement training room of the New York Athletic Club. "During a lesson he'd say, 'Do like Sergei does; watch a tape of Sergei.' He was always relating to him like a godlike character." That is, until last August, when Bayer faced Goloubitski in the quarterfinals of a World Cup fencing tournament in St. Petersburg, Russia. It was their first encounter since Goloubitski trounced Bayer, then a junior, six years before. "He wins a lot with sheer intimidation," Bayer said. "He makes good fencers look like children because of his tricks. He sets up his opponents very well. He has a lot of patience. But when he started his mind games, I didn't listen, which is what he doesn't want you to do."
