    Report from Ben Willis
    Cougar mauls Cherry Hill woman
From a US mailing list, post by Lyn Culver, April 2002
A Cherry Hill woman, Christine Lee, 36, remains in Mena Medical Center in stable condition after being bitten on the upper and lower arm by a newly-purchased adult cougar on Monday night.
According to her husband, Robert, Lee entered the cage while the cougar was feeding and it attacked her. "She got in there with him and she got bit twice on the arm, "said Mr. Lee. "We purchased the cat Sunday from a man in Horatio, who had three or four big cats. This one was originally a wild one but was hurt and nursed back to health, then kept in captivity for about five years.
"My sister had one and I had been around them before," he continued. "My wife saw the ones in Horatio and wanted one so I bought it. It got away the first night we got it home (Sunday) but didn't go far and we tranquilized it and brought it back to the cage. The next night it got a hold of my wife when she went in the cage."
Arkansas Game and Fish Officer Phillip Abernathy said a 911 call came in about 6:25 Monday night. "The First Responders and the Ambulance crew were there when I arrived, and they were caring for the woman in the ambulance," said Abernathy. "We believe a combination of alcohol and inexperience played a significant role in this incident. I highly recommend that if you intend to keep an animal like this, you get some professional training before bringing it home. I believe this kind of incident is one of the reasons we have big feral cats in Arkansas. People buy these creatures and find out that they're not as compatible or as wonderful as they thought, and they end up releasing them into the wild rather than finding appropriate homes for them."

Why felines must have nine lives
By LaVERNE HAMMOND Published July 26, 2005 Recently America's Dairyland made the nation's headlines. It had nothing to do with our Green Bay Packers or our famous Door County fishboils. Wisconsinites were in the news because of our overpopulation of cats - feral ones. Wisconsin's wild felines have a taste for our songbirds and consume 7.8-million to 219-million birds a year, according to state researchers. Alarmed by this massacre, some Wisconsinites had suggested that the state declare open season on these critters. Naturally, cat lovers were up in arms. And even though Wisconsin's governor, Jim Doyle, quickly reassured them that the state would never allow people to go around shooting stray felines, our state got the reputation for being anti-cat. Now wherever I go, people ask, "Are you in favor of shooting kitties?"

Wild to Mild," sponsored by Friskies PetCare Company and the National Science Foundation combines information on cat mythology, biology, behavior, conservation, and responsible pet care. The exhibition will travel throughout the United States, Canada, and other selected locations. Much of the content from the exhibit is presented in these pages, as well as the complete Teacher's Study Guide that accompanies the exhibition. We hope you enjoy your visit, whether it is "real" or "virtual."

By SAMANTHA CRITCHELL of The Associated Press Published Sunday, December 26, 2004 NEW YORK - The Metropolitan Museum of Art, home of intricate Roman busts, classic 18th-century French furniture and stately presidential portraits, showed its wild side with a new exhibit that prominently displays a crudely sewn leather-and-shearling bikini, leopard-print cat suits and feather-covered costumes worthy of a Las Vegas showgirl. Over the centuries, both men and women embraced animal-inspired styles, especially as a sign of wealth, explains Andrew Bolton, the Costume Institute associate curator. Women wore such clothes to portray themselves as hunters, predators, coquettes and femmes fatales. Garments embellished with feathers in white or pastels, such as the beige silk organdy dress covered with rooster and bird of paradise feathers by YSL from 1969, send a subtle message because the colors and softness of the look suggest innocence while the animation of the feathers are a tease.

When a cat sits with both feet tucked inward and studies you with the same admiration you would direct toward a Rembrandt, you know you have been adopted.
There are over sixty million cats in the United States. Cats have surpassed dogs in popularity, most likely because they can be happily maintained indoors, and are affectionate and clean.

For all kinds of problems and questions associated with litterboxes and elimination problems, you must visit CatsInternational.org . Here you will find lots of excellent information about litterbox problems, types of litter, spraying and marking, and even how to clean up stains. Students work with wild and endangered felines in a sanctuary near Boyd. The Shorthorn: Mark Roberts Environmental biology senior Janelle Lemke, left, interns at the International Exotic Feline Sanctuary. Biology graduate student Karyn Brice, right, is a volunteer at the 40-acre refuge. The sanctuary, which offers tours on weekends, houses 66 cats of 15 species that have been abandoned or donated. A stretch of State Highway 114 brings the environmental biology senior just east of Boyd, where some of the rarest animals in the world await her.
The two students are enrolled in an animal behavior class psychology professor Roger Melgren teaches but met through their involvement at the sanctuary. Rather than learning strictly from books and lectures, the students experience animal behavior up close at the sanctuary.
Lemke laughs after picking up a metal bowl with holes chewed through it.

Contents Lesson Plan IV - Preserving Endangered Species CLICK HERE - Tigerhomes ANIMAL CAMS All eight subspecies of felines introduced are endangered or threatened in the wild. The primary reason for every decreasing number of these Felines is loss of habitat. Human population growth and subsequent destruction of what was once wild natural habitat, agricultural farming, and excessive hunting and poaching are other reasons for dwindling numbers of Felines in the wild. Have students pick an endangered species that interests them. Have them research the behavior of these animals in the wild and then design a captive breeding and care program that would help preserve the species until it is safe for them to live in the wild. They should take into account such things as home range size, territorial habits, social structure, food sources and methods of attainment and anything else they consider a significant contributory factor to a successful captive breeding program for the survival of the species.

Cats Trivia Page 1 Page 2 Cats outnumber dogs by millions as house pets. In the US alone, there are about sixty million. In the US, thirty seven percent of houses have at least one pet cat. In the UK, about twenty five percent of houses have at least one pet cat. In Australia, twenty six percent of houses have at least one pet cat. There are about five hundred million pet cats in the world. The earliest ancestor of the cat was the miacis, which lived over fifty five million years ago. The miacis had a long body and tail, short legs and looked somewhat like a weasel. The ancestor of all domestic cats is African wild cat. All domestic cats are members of same species, Felis Catus. The sand cat found mainly in Africa burrows into the sand to protect itself from the heat of the sun during the day. Many wild cats also live in caves. The fishing cat found in India and Pakistan finds most of its prey in the water. The fishing cat is an excellent swimmer and catches fish, frogs and reptiles to feeds on.
