RAISING ORPHANED OCELOT AND OTHER SMALL WILD CATS
SUCH AS BOBCATS AND SERVALS
Ocelots, bobcats, servals and other small wild cats are not difficult to raise by hand. Ocelots, bobcats, and servals make much better pets if they are raised by humans and exposed to people before their eyes have opened or their nervous system has developed fully. Ocelots, bobcats and servals can be raised on formulas and with techniques designed for orphan domestic cats. Ocelots, bobcats and servals. Ocelots, bobcats and servals require a formula that is low in lactose or milk sugar. Ocelots, bobcats and servals do well on reconstituted powdered kitten formula.
Upon intake, kittens should be warmed and stabilized before any feeding is attempted. First feedings should be of a warmed electrolyte solution such as Lactated Ringer's Solution, one half strength or Lactated Ringers' Solution with 2.5% Dextrose, or a similar physiologically ally balanced solution which, along with appropriate syringes, is available through my web page. Once the kittens are hydrated and sucking well, gradually introduce mixed formula with the electrolyte solution, 25% per day, until the kittens are taking full strength formula. Some kittens may not take well to the electrolyte solution, so the process of introducing formula may have to be accelerated. If diarrhea occurs, dilute the formula and work back gradually to full strength.

Fancy Felines
Whether you like your cats striped or spotted, sleek or fuzzy, there is a breed for you. Indeed, cat breeding has become a multi-billion dollar business around the world, with breeders constantly competing to create exotic new varieties that might win the blue ribbon at the next pet show. Often, cat breeders will carefully comb wild and domestic breeds looking for just the right combination of characteristics, matching long hair from one breed, for example, with racy stripes from another. But other times, chance plays as big a role as design in the development of a popular breed.
Unusual breeds can cost up to $3,500 or more. The remarkable curve-eared American Curl, for instance, got its start with a stray cat discovered in California in 1981. "On a sunny day in June, a longhair silky black female kitten with unusual ears wandered up to the doorstep of Joe and Grace Ruga," explains one Web site devoted to the cats with the gracefully-arced ears. "Joe [asked] Grace not to feed the kitten. Grace, not abiding by her husband's wishes but listening to her heart instead, left a bowl of food on the porch. The affectionate black kitten quickly worked her way into the Rugas' hearts (especially Joe's) and they named her Shulamith, which means "black but comely." Such are the beginnings of the American Curl as it is known today.

Playful, brave, loving, and incorrigible! NATURE ponders those EXTRAORDINARY CATS.
Cats command our attention and our devotion. These fascinating creatures have been perplexing people for thousands of years. Are they wild or tame? Aloof or emotional? Funny or indignant? Angelic or mischievous? Needy or independent? The answer is all of the above. And that's why we adore them.
In fact, they outnumber dogs as pets 66 million to 55 in the U.S. After all, they're more independent, and, perhaps even more significantly, cats provide us with a close connection to something wild.
Indeed, no matter how well a cat is fed, stroked, brushed, and otherwise fussed over, they are hunters at heart.
EXTRAORDINARY CATS profiles fascinating felines from Sooty, a cat who found his way over 100 miles back home, to Scarlett, who risked her life to save her kittens from a burning building.

Wild Thing
They roam the streets, scavenging through dumpsters and junkyards, slinking into shadows at the sight or sound of humans. They are predominantly undetected, an urban myth to many city dwellers. But feral cats are an all-too-abundant reality for the people working to save them. Feral cats are felines that have had little or no human contact; as a result, they exist in a wild state. Approach them and they'll bolt; pick up one that's injured or sick, and you'll likely sustain severe gashes or bites. They're not "mean" cats, contrary to what some might think; they're simply terrified of humans, much like a squirrel or raccoon. Unlike totally undomesticated animals, however, feral cats often can be socialized with patience and kindness.
There are an estimated 60 to 80 million feral cats in the United States, and the population is growing. Most die before reaching one year of age, and too often, their deaths are tragically slow. Feral cats are at the mercy of extreme heat and cold, disease, lack of water and food, dangerous cars and trucks, coyotes and aggressive dogs, and other potentially lethal forces. But increasingly, people across the United States are mobilizing to help this special group of animals.
"I Didn't Know She Had It In Her"
The explosion of feral cats can be traced to the 1990s, when cats became extremely popular as pets. Unfortunately, too many guardians didn't realize that female kittens can breed when they're as young as five months old. An unspayed kitten will run away to seek out a mate. And when it's time for her to give birth, she'll usually try to find a secluded spot, such as an abandoned house, a drainage pipe, or a car in a junkyard. If her young ones aren't exposed to humans before about three weeks of age, they'll become feral. Luckily, kittens are good candidates for socialization, if rescued early on.

The LIOC-ESCF Non-Domestic Felines Husbandry Course
This course is offered by LIOC-ESCF . The purpose of this course is to familiarize one with the basic principles needed to work with wild or exotic felines species. This course is offered on an irregular basis, usually about 2 times a year. (Check the website above for the next scheduled class.) I have heard rave reviews from all my cat-friends that had previously attended this course. The cost of the course was also quite reasonable, typically $75. Since I will soon be volunteering at the zoo next door, and hope someday to own a couple of lions, I decided this course would be a worthwwhile thing to attend. It would also be a good opportunity to meet a lot of the cat-people I know only on the internet. I had waited up to this point for a class to be near where I am, so I can avoid the expense (And since September 11th., the hassle) of airline travel. The course had been in Seattle in August, but the timing was very poor for me to attend at that time. So, I was very elated to hear it would be offered in early December, 2001 at a place just north of San Fransisco. This is within easy driving distance for me. As an added incentive, this particular course included an extra day where you could get some hands-on with some of the smaller exotic felines! I planned to combine this trip with a visit to San Mateo, CA. A professional colleauge was leaving his job at KCSM TV, and wanted some of us who collect old broadcst equipment to come and help clean out his warehouse. I would then (Hopefully with a fully loaded truck!) drive up to Geyserville, CA, which is 75 miles north of San Fransisco. This is where the exotic feline husbandry course was to be offered, at a place called 'Isis Oasis'.

Cats! Wild to Mild is sure to be the "cat's meow". Supported by the Friskies PetCare Company, the National Science Foundation, Jaguar Cars North America and the Cat Fanciers' Association, this national traveling exhibition is the most comprehensive show ever launched on the history, biology and evolution of wild and domestic cats. Cats! Wild to Mild traces the history of cats from wild, exotic felines to America's Number One pet. Visitors can "prowl" into the realms of feline science, myth, responsible pet care, endangerment and conservation issues of wild cats. Developed by the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, the exhibit will tour at least 15 cities across North America over the next five years. "This exhibit uses the visitors' familiarity and love of cats to teach basic science and biology lessons," said Dr. Blaire Van Valkeburgh, guest curator of the Cats! exhibition and professor of vertebrate morphology at the University of California Los Angeles. "The museum also hopes to inspire children and adults to learn about careers in science, while educating exhibit visitors about responsible pet care and the highly endangered status of wild cats."

Costa Rica is home to 6 species of wildcats. The smallest of these felines is the Tigrillo (Oncilla) which doesn't grow bigger than a house cat. It spends most of its life on trees, in forests up to 3200 m. The Margay Cat (Caucel) is a little bit bigger than the Tigrillo and is also mainly arborical. It has a special joint on its legs which permits to rotate its foot backwards, thus making it an excellent tree climber. With one meter in length, the Ocelot (Manigordo) is the largest representative of the small wild cats. Although it is the most common of Costa Rica's wild cats it is as rarely seen as its relatives because they all avoid encounters with humans. The Jaguarundi http://www.profelis.com
