Pros, cons of feral and free-ranging cat management debated
Proponents advocate preparation and education
Dr. Slater, who participates in a TNR program on the Texas A&M campus, gave two presentations on TNR programs July 15 in Nashville. She said the programs can be successfully used to reduce free-ranging and feral cat populations, as long as they are a part of a multifaceted approach. Her presentations were part of a day-long series of sessions on the issue titled, "Free-roaming and feral cats and the public."
She advocated that veterinarians be more proactive in helping their clients build strong relationships with their pets by offering clients advice on selecting appropriate cats as pets, educating pet owners about normal cat behavior, and offering mini-courses on cat training and socialization.
But the key is controlling cat fertility by neutering, she said. Veterinarians can help by working with shelters and TNR programs and by promoting sterilization of clients' cats.
"Veterinarians hold the key in terms of controlling fertility," Dr. Slater said.

Ocelot, Leopardus pardalis Legal Status They are listed by CITES as Appendix I. IUCN lists the ocelot as Least Concern. Ocelots are protected by national legislation over most of their range. Only Peru still allows hunting, and only Ecuador, El Salvador and Guyana offer no protection. Description : The ocelot is the best-known small cat of the Americas, largely because of the beauty of its coat. Its pelage is short and close (less plush than the similarly patterned but smaller margay) and marked with both rosettes and spots that tend to run in parallel chains along the sides of the body. Range : Ocelots are found in every country south of the United States except Chile; its presence was only recently confirmed in western Uruguay. At the northern end of its range, only two significant ocelot populations are believed to persist in the southeastern corner of Texas. Ocelots have been extirpated from Arkansas, Louisiana, eastern Texas and Arizona, although individuals may still occasionally cross into Arizona from Mexico. Habitat : Ocelots occupy a wide spectrum of habitats, including mangrove forests and coastal marshes, savannah grasslands and pastures, thorn scrub and tropical forests of all types (primary, secondary, evergreen, seasonal and montane).

At the Texas Exotic Feline Foundation (TEFF) outside of Boyd in North Texas, one of the first things our guide told us was: "We exist here for the cats." The sanctuary is a retirement home for large cats that have been abandoned, neglected, or abused. Many of the animals are on the wildlife endangered or threatened list, and all of them are gorgeous creatures. There is a story in the eyes of every one of the 69 cats housed at the 28-acre facility less than an hour north of Fort Worth. "The cats come from every situation in the world, mostly bad," says Richard Gilbreth, director of the feline rescue facility that is considered the best of its kind in the U.S. "There are more tigers in Texas than people know what to do with," he says. "It's becoming an epidemic." In the wild the cats live about 10 years; in captivity the cats grow to several hundred pounds and live for about 20 years. Gilbreth says they have to turn away 100 to 150 cats a year. Most of the cats at TEFF were born and raised in the U.S. Ten years ago a lion or tiger cub sold for $8,000 to $15,000. "That eliminated a lot of people from the market," he says. Tempted by the prospects of selling two to four cubs a year, breeders jumped into the business. Soon prices dropped to $300 to $500 and the cats became an impulse purchase.

Biomedical Research Benefits You
Contents:
Summary
Virtually every medical advance has been made possible through the use of animal models in research. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the average life expectancy for human beings in Canada has increased from the range of 45 to 75 years. While changes in our lifestyle (such as improved nutrition, reduction in smoking, and proper exercise) have played a part, this dramatic increase in our life expectancy is largely due to advances in health care as a result of biomedical research . This life-saving research has depended heavily on animal studies. This tombstone carving in a Vermont cemetery reflects the high infant mortality of the late 1700's... when 50 percent of all deaths were children under 10. Many of us take for granted the fact that biomedical research consistently contributes to our high standard of health and health care. We often do not think about how much our daily lives depend on the benefits we have received, and continue to receive, from animal-based research. Take one of the major killers of people:

The human members of the capture teams are in little danger. It's a different story for the tracking dogs, though. In a few cases, a panther has bitten a dog, but by far, the greatest threats to the dogs are alligators and snakes. Eighteen panthers had been vaccinated as of mid-March. "From here on out, this is going to be part of our standard capture procedure, to vaccinate for feline leukemia. We are doing boosters as well," Dr. Cunningham said. He thinks the chances that the outbreak is contained are good. "Right now, I'm pretty optimistic about it," Dr. Cunningham said. "I don't want to say that we've turned the corner, but I'm really pleased we've vaccinated as many cats as we have."

THE INDIGENOUS WITHIN
A Cross Curricular Study
What is their relationship with endangered species? Similar to indigenous people all over the world, Paraguay's first inhabitants relied on their natural surroundings for survival and inspiration.  The lush subtropical eastern region offered an abundance of plant and animal life.  Tools and weapons were made from bone, wood and thorns.  Fish and game sustained them along with maize and mandioca which could be planted.  Ancient sounds of the forest are still preserved in their language, which contains many onomatopoetic words.  Religious beliefs incorporate their reverence for nature.  They are said to have given names to 1,100 species of plants which were used medicinally.  Art work also reflects the importance of the natural world to the indigenous as evidenced in materials used to create and design elements of the products.  Many of the plants and animals that were once prolific are now listed as endangered.  This page contains a list of  links for learning more about endangered species.

Back to News Clippings Page North America's Mystery Cat
By Gary Turbak - National Wildlife Federation - June/July, 2003 Analyzing DNA gleaned from hair samples, scientists are beginning to uncover secrets about the rare and elusive Canada lynx
DEEP IN WASHINGTON'S Okanogan National Forest, a lynx performs an ancient feline ritual: rubbing. Lured to this spot by wildlife biologists, the cat presses its cheek and neck against a nail-studded pad tacked to a tree. Moments later, the lynx resumes its predatory rounds, but leaves behind a few hairs-exactly the evidence the scientists need to document the species' elusive presence. Studying Canada lynx has always been a bit like counting smoke, as the shy cats dwell mostly in remote northern woods and only infrequently cross paths with people. "Amazingly, no one even knows where in this country lynx exist, let alone how many cats might be out there," says University of Montana wildlife biologist Scott Mills. But today that is changing, thanks to Mills and other scientists engaged in an ambitious effort to document lynx everywhere the cats roam. Employing a mix of low-tech, high-tech tools as disparate as aluminum pie plates and mitochondrial DNA, the survey already has revealed at least one previously unknown hotbed of lynx activity. "Our goal is to appraise the distribution of lynx across its entire U.S. range," says coprincipal investigator Mills.

KEEPING CAPTIVE / EXOTIC WILDLIFE Introduction People who want to acquire various wildlife species frequently contact MassWildlife for information . Some people already have an animal and may be disappointed or frustrated to learn they cannot lawfully keep it in Massachusetts. To avoid such problems and concerns, the public is encouraged to learn the laws pertaining to the possession of wildlife in Massachusetts before they acquire an animal. A summary of these laws is below. This is only a summary and people should refer to the appropriate Massachusetts General Laws (MGL) and the Code of Massachusetts Regulations (CMR) for details. Background: Massachusetts pet stores are inspected and regulated by the Department of Food and Agriculture but the stores must follow MassWildlife laws regarding the animals that they may sell. Purchasers can reasonably assume that an animal for sale in a Massachusetts pet store may be lawfully sold and possessed. Do not assume that animals for sale in other states, including those states adjoining Massachusetts, are lawful in Massachusetts. Similarly, be wary of animals advertised for sale on the Internet or in newspapers. These animals may be lawful at the point of origin, but not in Massachusetts.

Felis Domesticus are the world's most popular pet, even surpassing their distant canine cousins. In America, there are 60 million cats gracing people with the privilege of their company. The newfound popularity of cats may be a result of society's changing lifestyles. People are busier than ever, and in most households both spouses work full time. While cats do require affection, they demand less attention than dogs, and are often happy on their own. Cats may become the ultimate pet for the information age. As we spend more of our time watching TV or surfing the Internet, a cat is perfectly content to just sit in your lap and sleep.

In the 1970's the Indian government aided by the WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) and the IUCN (World Conservation Union), initialized Project Tiger with the opening of nine tiger reserves. Today, the number of tiger reserves in India has risen to over twenty and their success has meant that, not only has the Indian tiger population stabilized, but also many new insights have been gained into the nature of the tiger in the wild. However poaching and the erosion of the surrounding habitat still endangers the Indian Tiger and as in other conservation areas and reserves, confrontation between local inhabitants and conservationists regarding the threat to domestic livestock and man himself still remains a problem to be resolved.
