DOMESTIC CAT PREDATION IN CALIFORNIA Cats Indoors Home State Cat Predation Intro California Florida ... Hawaii Cats can impact California Quail populations. Photo: Alan Hopkins Background: Most of California's threatened or endangered birds and land mammals are vulnerable to domestic cat predation. Although loss and fragmentation of habitat due to human development are the main causes of wildlife population declines, large numbers of pet, stray, and feral cats roaming the remaining habitat is a serious concern. Compounding this problem are the people and organizations who insist on maintaining cats in parks or adjacent to other sensitive wildlife areas (see "Managed" Cat Colonies in California ). The following studies show effects of cat predation on some of California's native wildlife. Cat Predation Studies in California: East Bay Regional Park District: A two-year study was conducted in two grassland parks in the East Bay Regional Park District. One park had no cats, but over 20 cats were fed daily in the other park. Almost twice as many birds were seen in the park with no cats as in the park with cats.

Habitat
Clouded leopards live in dense forests and are found at elevations of up to 6,560 feet (2,000 m). Head/Body Length (including tail) and Height
Length: Approximately 67 inches (139-184 cm) Height: 21 inches (54 cm) Weight
35-55 pounds (16-25 kg) Life Span
In the wild: unknown; At the zoo: up to 17 years Diet
In the wild: Birds, monkeys, squirrels, pigs, small deer and fish At the zoo: Commercially prepared feline diet, mutton, beef knuckle bone, chicken, horse meat, chicks, quail, ground turkey, trout and mice Reproduction
Female clouded leopards reach sexual maturity at about age 2 and males by age 3. The gestation period lasts 86 to 93 days. One to five offspring are born, each weighing between 5 and 6 ounces (140-170 gr) at birth. Females give birth in hollow trees, ground-level dens or other private places which are protected from weather. At birth infants eyes are closed and they are completely dependent on their mother. Cubs eyes open by day 12. Young will be nursed for about five months but can eat small pieces of meat about 40 days after birth. Cubs become independent of their mother at about 9 months old. After weaning, cubs disperse across the forest.

History of the LIOCendangered Species Conservation Federation. captivepropagation of these newly designated endangered and threatened felines.
http://www.lioc.org/History.html
History of the LIOC-ESCF
Back in the 1950's, ocelots and margays were commonly sold in retail pet stores. People who knew nothing about the proper care and feeding of these non-domestic cousins to the domestic tabby sold them to others who were equally ignorant of their special dietary and environmental needs. This resulted in calcium deficiencies, intestinal blockages, unnecessary canine teeth removals and worse. Something had to be done and Catherine Cisin, a caring lady from Amagansett, New York, was the woman to do it. She formed the Long Island Ocelot Club , and designed it to be a clearinghouse of husbandry information. Early LIOC newsletters depict an era long past. Back then, most ocelots and margays were jungle caught and legally imported into America as kittens. The majority were a by-product of the fur trade, and the mortality rate was 50%. If left when their mother's were killed for their pelts, all would have perished. Captive-breeding was in its infancy, a trial-and-error learning process. In the November, l959, LIOC Newsletter, Lillian Ward of Los Angeles, California, shared the news of Cheetah and Sheba ocelots, expecting the birth of their third litter in as many years. Jesus was born December 7th, 1957 and twins were born in November of 1958.
Yes, times were different, but wild cat ownership, even though largely confined to the small felids, unlike today's plethora of Panthera, still created controversy. These jungle cats were different, interesting, and to some, frightening. This was reflected in the human-interest stories published in national newspapers such as the one which appeared in the Daily News in Garden Grove, California on November 11th, l958, entitled

Many of these sites ask that you “get involved” and whether it’s through donations, purchasing goods, volunteering your time, or adoption of a cat, your help is needed. On a small scale, I volunteer at a local pet supply store catering to the needs of domestic animals along wild birds, squirrels, etc. but they also work in conjunction with the National Humane Society in the adoption of feral, abused, orphaned, and homeless cats. One of their sponsors is Big Cat Rescue, a non-profit organization devoted to the care of over 200 endangered wild cats many of which are listed on the endangered species list. I wrote about Big Cat last month and the wonderful work they’ve been doing since 1992. Their contribution was to donate a cattery that was erected inside the store and houses the felines up for adoption. My job is to spend time with the cats and give them hands on human interaction, love and attention. I also have helped with preparing supplies for upcoming surgeries offered at the mobile medical clinic by the Humane Society.

Hawaii is considered the endangered species capital of the world. Because of its isolation, Hawaii’s unique birds evolved without predators such as domestic cats, rats, and mongooses. As a result, Hawaii’s native birds are extremely vulnerable to predation, especially now that their natural habitat has been greatly reduced by farming and human development. Although domestic cats are not the only threat to Hawaii’s rare birds, they are an important factor, even in higher elevations far from human development. Cats can breed year-round in Hawaii, with 3 litters per year of 4 - 6 kittens
per litter. Rabies does not occur in Hawaii, and there are no wild predators to help keep the free-roaming cat population in check. In 1861, Mark Twain wrote upon his arrival in Hawaii, “.... I saw cats .... individual cats, groups of cats, platoons of cats, companies of cats, regiments of cats, armies of cats, multitudes of cats, millions of cats....”

What is the Species Puma concolor coryi. The Florida Panther is a subspecies of cougar that has
adapted to the subtropical environment of Florida. How Many Panthers Are Left? Only 80 to 100 panthers still remain in Florida, making this one of the most rare and endangered mammals in the world. Where is their Habitat? Florida Panthers are usually found in pinelands, hardwood hammocks, and mixed swamp forests. Adult males may range over an area of 200 square miles, while females range over a 70 to 80 square mile area. Florida panthers are very solitary animals. An adult maintains a home range to live, hunt and, if female, raise its young alone. A male panther's home range is very large and averages 275 square miles and overlaps with the smaller home ranges of females. Panthers maintain boundaries by marking with scents. They rarely fight over territory.

Many of you know that I am a cat admirer. My love of the feline mobsters goes back to childhood when our family moved to Edinburgh, Scotland's capital, from the Fifeshire town of Dunfermline where I was born.
We inherited a rather undesirable grey, moth-eaten old tomcat with an ear missing. We named him Smudge. This unattractive but still noble creature used us a feeding stop and occasional shelter while about his dubious business. He did not once bring home a lady friend, let alone the product of his ungirded, unguarded even, loins. I remember, as a five or six year old, throwing the protesting animal on to an (unlit) fire which scared the proverbial out of him and attaching a rubber ball with a length of elastic to his poor tail which caused much hilarity in me, but not in the strangely trusting old Smudge. The awful guilt and sadness to follow meant that these dreadfulnesses of brat-child excess were never to repeat in my subsequent relationships with that most independent but people- loving companion, Felis felis, Felis domesticus, Felis vulgaris, or Felis pussycatimus, depending on your level of schoolboy Latin and taxonomic species recognition.

"I hope that the information here is of some stimulation to any of you who have ever cuddled a new pet kitten or simply admired one of nature's minor miracles. The little guy who shares your home is a tiny step away, genetically speaking, from the wide array of the 36 species of wild cat, big and small.
They all, to a man, are the pussies cat."
Ian Anderson, January 2001
According to Dr. Jim Sanderson, most people are only aware of the existence of roughly one third of the 37 remaining species of cats on this planet. While millions of dollars in the United States are finally being set aside and spent on much needed conservation and studies of the better known "Big Cats", such as the highly endangered Tiger, what about the lesser known, but equally important medium and small wild cats Dr. Sanderson estimates that currently "less that US $50,000 is spent on small cat research all over the world." This appalling and tragic fact has caught the attention, the spirit and the passion of famous musician and devoted cat lover, Ian Anderson.

Contents Lesson Plan IV - Preserving Endangered Species CLICK HERE - Tigerhomes ANIMAL CAMS All eight subspecies of felines introduced are endangered or threatened in the wild. The primary reason for every decreasing number of these Felines is loss of habitat. Human population growth and subsequent destruction of what was once wild natural habitat, agricultural farming, and excessive hunting and poaching are other reasons for dwindling numbers of Felines in the wild. Have students pick an endangered species that interests them. Have them research the behavior of these animals in the wild and then design a captive breeding and care program that would help preserve the species until it is safe for them to live in the wild. They should take into account such things as home range size, territorial habits, social structure, food sources and methods of attainment and anything else they consider a significant contributory factor to a successful captive breeding program for the survival of the species.

UFLaw Conservation Clinic Research: Wild Cats Threaten Endangered Species Nationwide With 4-to-6 million unwanted animals - mostly cats - put to sleep each year in the United States, some people might consider it more humane to free the felines into the wild. But as these cats forage for food and establish their territories, they kill more than a billion small mammals and birds each year, many of which are threatened or endangered, a University of Florida study shows. Feral, or free-roaming, untamed cats pose a serious threat to endangered species nationwide as colonies of the wild cats have grown, largely because local groups provide funding and resources to sustain them, according to the UF Levin College of Law Conservation Clinic study commissioned by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. In addition, although the study found those who release cats into the wild or support feral cat colonies are violating numerous federal and state wildlife protection laws, enforcement of the law in these cases has largely been ignored, according to the study (presented in March at Ninth Annual Public Interest Environmental Conference).

Introduction
The Florida panther used to live all across the Southeast United States, but now it is limited to a tiny group of cats. There are so few left that their gene pool is on the brink of collapsing. Today this cat barely ekes out space amidst the ever-expanding Florida population. It faces nearly insurmountable odds of recovery, but it may survive. Photos:
Panthers generally cover between five and seven miles a day.
Endangered Cats of North America How many North American wild cats can you name? Most people may name two or three, but North America is home to many wild cats. From the forests of eastern Canada to the scrublands of Mexico, wild cats were once prevalent throughout North America. Today, these cats are now restricted to small fractions of their original ranges. While most of North America's cats are protected by law in one or more countries, in almost all cases, their populations continue to struggle against a variety of threats. The National Wildlife Federation's Endangered Cats of North America report indicates that many of North America's cats are threatened or endangered.

ScienceWeek ANIMAL BIOLOGY: ON CATS
The following points are made by Stephen J. O'Brien (Current Biology 2004 14:R988):
3) Cats have been studied for centuries by anatomists, physiologists, behaviorists and now geneticists. There are many of them, and they are small and easy to keep in the laboratory. Whether we love cats or hate them, biology has learned much from studies of their comparative anatomy, comparative physiology (notably neurology) and behavior. For many biological sub-disciplines, the 36 cat species are considered as three groups: large, medium and small, a testament to their amazing similarity.
4) The exception is reproduction, where each species has evolved exquisite co-adapted strategies for ovulation, hormone level regulation, sperm production, estrous incidence, mating preference and social organization. Scrutiny by behavioral ecologists has provided a rich literature of distinctive reproductive parameters for several cat species, facilitating advances in assisted reproduction such as artificial insemination, cryo-preservation, embryo transfer, in vitro fertilization and the first cloning of a domestic cat in 2002. The advanced stage of reproductive assessment will one day soon lead to feline embryonic stem cells, transgenic and gene knockout cats, and protocols for stem cell and gene therapy trials.[1-5]

The following statements defining the Humane Society of Southern Arizona's position on the use and treatment of animals have been adopted by the Board of Directors.
Rodeo
The Humane Society of Southern Arizona, Inc. is opposed to rodeo events that result in torment, harassment, and stress being inflicted upon the participating animals and expose rodeo stock to the probability of pain, injury or death. We denounce this type of unnecessary exploitation and the use of devices such as electric prods, sharpened sticks, spurs, flank straps, and other rodeo tack used to induce animals to react violently. We find these abuses cannot be justified. HSSA believes the Southwest culture can be portrayed through other types of activities, such as parades, barrel racing and other types of Quadrille activities, or other activities that do not cause pain, injury or unnecessary stress to an animal.
Zoos
The Humane Society of Southern Arizona, Inc. recognizes the widespread existence of zoos and acknowledges that some serve demonstrable purposes for the long-term benefit of animals, such as preservation and restoration of endangered or threatened species, and education of people to the needs of wild animals and their role in the ecosystem In order to justify their existence, zoos must serve such purposes, must maintain animals in conditions simulating their natural habitats as closely as possible, and must treat them with the highest degree of humaneness, care and professionalism.
