Micronesia Map
Micronesia is a vast region stretching from Hawaii to the Philippines. Continental Air Micronesia links five of the seven countries and territories shown on our map of Micronesia: the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the Republic of Palau. All four states of the Federated States of Micronesia - Kosrae, Pohnpei, Chuuk, and Yap - are on the Continental Micronesia "Island Hopper" routings. Air Nauru is the airline serving Nauru and the Republic of Kiribati from Australia and Fiji. Resorts and hotels exist on all the islands, making a Micronesian vacation quite practical. The history of Micronesia begins 3,000 years ago when the first canoes traveled to the islands from South East Asia. Much later the culture of Micronesia was influenced by Spain, Germany, Japan, and the United States. The Federated States of Micronesia grew out of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands created after World War Two. The Marshall Islands and Palau seceded from the Trust Territory to form countries of their own, while the Northern Marianas joined the United States.

The most well known is Guam, an American territory and gateway to the other island groups. The others islands, Pohnpei, Chuuk (Truk), Kosrae and Yap elected to join a federal government known as the Federated States of Micronesia with headquarters in Pohnpei. Palau and the Marshall Islands voted to remain independent and have established autonomous governments. Federated States Of Micronesia Contact: Country Programme I. Country Background
The Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) are made up of four States, namely Pohnpei (the capital), Chuuk, Yap, and Kosrae. Each of the four states has its own executive, legislatory and judiciary body, with responsibilities for state-wide economic and social development, including health and education. Regional development is carried out following overall national development plans approved by a national consensus. Each state has retained a significant degree of autonomy. Distinct cultural and historical traditions, caused by geographical dispersion, present a major challenge in maintaining national unity and in the planning and execution of national development policies.
The population of the country is about 105,000 (1993) and GDP per capita, on average, is about US$1,800 with Yap being the wealthiest state with a per capita income of about $2,200 and Chuuk the poorest with a per capita income of about $1,400.
The broad social indicators of the country are, however, generally poor. Literacy rates and patchy health services across the archipelago are disappointing, given that the FSM are a low middle-level income country. Fertility rates are high with Government resource allocation to the health sector weighted more towards curative services rather than preventative and primary health care. The social and health indicators are poor considering that FSM is a low middle-level income country.

Why visit Kosrae?
"An ocean the color of jewels you want to wear.
A smile so dazzling it invites you to stay awhile longer. These are the sights of Kosrae. The ebb and flow of the tides;
the rain beating on the thatch
and the birds wakening you with song. These are the sounds of Kosrae. Have you ever smelled the color green? That is the smell of Kosrae. Written by G. Rose, a Kosrae Village Resort guest, October 1997
Micronesia, The Island of Kosrae
Kosrae is located in the Federated States of Micronesia, an island group in the Pacific Ocean that is north of Papua New Guinea. See the Map of Micronesia below. You may have heard about the diving in Palau, diving in Yap with the Mantas, diving in Truk (Chuuk) with the World War II wrecks. Kosrae is also in Micronesia, just east of Truk and south of Pohnpei. We are not as well known, which means not so many visitors! Imagine yourself enjoying our pristine reefs, untouched jungles and our unbelievably clear waterways that stretch through the many enormous mangrove trees. Not enough reasons to come to Kosrae? Here are some more:

Foreign relations of the Federated States of Micronesia
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
The Government of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) conducts its own foreign relations. Since independence, the FSM has established diplomatic relations with a number of nations, including most of its Pacific neighbors. Regional cooperation through various multilateral organizations is a key element in its foreign policy. The FSM became a member of the United Nations in The Governments of the FSM and the U.S. signed the final version of the Compact of Free Association on October 1 , 1982. The Compact went into effect on November 3 , 1986, and the FSM became a sovereign nation in free association with the United States. Under the Compact, the U.S. has full authority and responsibility for the defense of the FSM. This security relationship can be changed or terminated by mutual agreement. The Compact provides U.S. grant funds and federal program assistance to the FSM. The basic relationship of free association continues indefinitely, but certain economic and defense provisions of the Compact expire in 2001, subject to renegotiation. Negotiations on extending the Compact began in November 1999. A notable aspect of Micronesian foreign relations is that it is one of the most consistent supporters of Israel (along with the United States ) in international affairs.

GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE UNITED NATIONS
AT ITS
FIFTY-EIGHTH SESSION NEW YORK, 23 SEPTEMBER 2003
MR. PRESIDENT, Mr. Secretary-General, Heads of States and Governments, Excellencies, ladies and gentlemen: I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate you, Mr. President, on your election. My Government is deeply gratified by the recognition of your accomplishments, especially given that you are a fellow islander. We are confident you will lead the work of this body with the same high competence as your distinguished predecessor, His Excellency Jan Kavan of the Czech Republic. Mr. President, Before going further I must pause in respectful remembrance of the second anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. We honor the memory of all who were lost. Tragically, the madness continues and we seem to be living in a world that is different than before. I must also express our sincere condolences over the great loss of life recently at the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad.

National Archives and Records Administration, 1994
Introduction
Participation of ethnic and racial minorities in the civil rights movement of the 1950's and 1960's has heightened public interest in their unique histories and drawn attention to their contributions to the United States. The National ArchivesPacific Region, a repository for the historically valuable noncurrent records of the Federal Government, is a major source for research in ethnic studies. One of the National Archives and Records Administration's 13 regional archives, it maintains historical records of Federal agencies in northern California, Hawaii, Nevada, American Samoa, and the Pacific Trust Territories. The records contain valuable historical information relating to Native Americans, and Americans of African, Chinese, Hispanic, Japanese, Samoan, and other ancestry. Especially notable are records of the Federal district and appellate courts, U.S. Army, U.S. Attorneys and Marshals, Community Services Administration, Fair Employment Practices Committee (World War II), Farmers Home Administration, Government of American Samoa, Immigration and Naturalization Service, Bureau of Indian Affairs, U.S. Navy, and microfilmed records of the Bureau of the Census.
