Pacific Service Region
Yap, Federated States of Micronesia
Yap State consists of a group of four volcanic islands and 19 inhabited outer islands and atolls, with a total land area of 46 square miles. Two-thirds of its estimated 12,055 people (est. 1999) live on Yap Island. One of the most traditional island groups of the Pacific, Yap has four languages: Yapese, Ulithian, Woleaian, and Satawalese. Culture
The Yapese society has a caste system consisting of seven levels. People are recognized and respected according to their village. Each person is named after an ancestor, which ties that person to a certain piece of property. Every group of islands within the Yapese society has its own unique cultural identity and customs. Traditionally, the women on the outer islands of Yap wear lava-lavas and men wear loincloths. The women on Yap proper wear grass skirts, and the men wear loincloths with a lava-lava and strings of hibiscus fibers all tied in a particular way. Today, western clothes and styles are more popular in use. Language

The U.S. Navy set up schools in Yap when it took control in 1945 and was replaced by the U.S. Department of the Interior in 1951. In a broad sense, the U.S. model is still in effect. This is reflected in the basic curriculum and the school day. The elementary school day operates from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., while the high school (Yap proper) goes from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Yap's educational system is still somewhat of a carryover from its Trust Territory days. According to education officials there, an effort is being made to more accurately reflect Yapese tradition and culture while still meeting the challenges of an emerging nation and rapidly changing world.

Chuuk, Federated States of Micronesia Chuuk State Culture

The Chuukese family consists of the father, mother, their offspring, the grandparents, and the first cousins, aunts, and uncles. This extended family is common throughout the islands of Chuuk. The father is the head of the household and when he passes away, the first-born male child will take responsibility. In the Chuukese culture, one greets an elder by shaking hands or bowing down. Children are taught to greet every elder they meet with respect. They learn at an early age not to talk in a group of people or when older people are talking. This is to show respect. Chuukese children are further taught not to talk back to an older person, but to listen and concur. Language
The Chuukese language is only one of the many languages that fall under the Austronesian linguistic group. Approximately 50,000 people in the islands of Chuuk speak it. In the central region of the Chuuk islands, people speak three different dialects, but they can each understand the other. Useful greetings are provided with English translations and phonetic pronunciations on colorful Language Cards produced by PREL:

Formal education in Chuuk dates from the arrival of the first protestant missionaries in the 1800s. Before that, learning of traditional skills was the norm. At present, the educational system offers both public and private schooling. Elementary is from grades 1 to 8 with five-year-old children attending Head Start. After grade school, students attend junior high school and then senior high school. The curriculum comprises Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, Mathematics, Physical Education, Health, Vernacular Language Arts, and Cultural Studies. English is the required spoken language at all grade levels, especially from third grade through high school.

In they adopted a constitution, and in independence was attained under a Compact of Free Association with the United States. Present concerns include large-scale unemployment, overfishing, and overdependence on U.S. aid. The Federated States of Micronesia are located in the region known as Micronesia , which consists of hundreds of small islands divided in seven territories. The name Micronesia often refers to the Federated States, although it is the official name of the whole region. Yap is located in the Western Carolines, about Midway between Guam and Palau. Yap is one volcanic complex made up of four islands plus eleven inhabited outer islands and atolls. The total land area of Yap State is 46 sq. miles. The first round of negotiations between Congress of Micronesia and the U.S. were held in 1969 to discuss the future political status of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, which later became the Federated States of Micronesia. The Compact of Free Association between the U.S. and the Federated States of Micronesia was signed in 1986. This contract outlined the security and economic agreements. In 1991, Micronesia was admitted as a member of the United Nations General Assembly. There are four traditional, distinct languages in Yap: Yapese, Ulitian, Woleaian, and Satawalese. Yapese is the language spoken on Yap proper. The other languages are spoken in the outer islands. Words in Japanese, Spanish, German, and English are also woven into the language. Generally, Yapese youths speak English as their second language. Most elders speak Japanese as their second language. English is the official language of the Federated States of Micronesia. Many Yapese still wear traditional attire of loincloths or "thus" for the men and "grass skirts" or lava lavas for the women. "Thus" are generally made of red, white, or blue cloth. The grass skirts worn by Yapese women are not made of grass but of shredded leaves of ti, banana, betelnut, fragrant ginger, fern, and other leaves. Today, the western culture has influenced the Yap dress code and many Yapese are seen wearing shorts and t-shirts with name brand logos such as Nike. The more traditional ways of dressing are reserved for dance.

Pohnpei's Last Nanwel Lowland forest, Pohnpei Pohnpei has been the focus of The Nature Conservancy's work in the Federated States of Micronesia for the last nine years. The island's traditional culture, dating back more than 2,000 years, is intimately connected with stewardship of the land and sea. Through the ages, Pohnpeians have honored the sharp distinction between nanwel , spirit-inhabited inland forests that are essentially off-limits to human use, and nansapw , land converted to human use with the sanction of traditional authority. However, as the outside world has influenced the island state, traditional authority restricting the use of forests has weakened considerably. Fortunately, the Salapwuk Valley, revered as the "home of the first Pohnpeians," appears to be a unique exception. A 3,200-acre volcanic bowl near the island's center, the Salapwuk Valley is the largest intact lowland tropical forest in the north Pacific outside of Hawaii. The entire valley is covered by unbroken native forests, including broadleaf and palm forests in the lower areas, and cloud forest at higher altitudes. Nearly all of Pohnpei's some 120 endemic plant, bird and fish species make it their home. An intact forest valley such as this is extremely rare in the small islands of the Pacific making it of particular conservation significance to the island and the entire region.

Abstract
Field releases of mass reared larvae and adults of Pareuchaetes pseudoinsulata were undertaken in Chromolaena odorata infested areas on Kosrae, Pohnpei and Yap. Despite extensive releases made, the biological control agent became established and controlled the weed only in one area at Kosrae and one municipality at Pohopei. No establishment of P. pseudoinsulata occurred on Yap; possibly the number of mass-released larvae was not enough to start an infestation. The non-establishment of P. pseudoinsulata in other 4 municipalities of Pohnpei and 3 municipalities of Kosrae remained unexplainable, although it was suspected to be due to the presence of predaceous fauna in the release areas.
Intro duction
The Siam weed, Chromolaena odorata (L.) R. M. King and H. Robinson, has been the primary target pest for biological control in Federation States of Micronesia (FSM) since 1989 (Esguerra et al., 1991). Through the Agricultural Development in the American Pacific (ADAP) project on Biological Control Agent Exchange, the Federated States of Micronesia was fortunate to receive the biological control agent, Pareuchaetes pseudoinsulata Rego Barros, from Guam. The biological control agent became known to us because of its successful control of the weed in Rota, Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands and Guam.
