The New Hampshire Law Library is the only public Law Library in the State of New Hampshire. Its mission is to advance the administration of justice by providing legal information and related services to the judicial, legislative, and executive branches of government, the legal communities of New Hampshire, and the people of the State. HISTORY: In 1716, a collection of law books belonging to the provincial government formed the first state library collection. After the State House was built in 1816, a room was set aside for the library. For a time, the Secretary of State also served as the State Librarian. In 1895, a separate building was constructed to house the State Library and the New Hampshire Supreme Court. In1943, the State Library separated out its legal materials and created a Law Division of the State Library. It served as the Law Library for many years. In 1970, the current Supreme Court building was constructed, and the Law Division of the State Library moved, along with the New Hampshire Supreme Court, to the Supreme Court building.

Definitions The Jargon Used in Legislation
Annotated Codes: Publications that combine state or federal statutes with summaries of cases that have interpreted the statutes. With a very few exceptions, annotated codes are only available in a law library. Bill: What a statute is called when it is introduced in Congress or a state legislature. When a bill is passed by both houses and the President or a state governor, it will usually be published according to its bill number in a publication called " Session Laws " or " Statutes at Large Bill Number: Bills are referred to by their number. The number really has two parts: the abbreviation for the specific wing of the legislature in which the bill is introduced, as in HB (house bill) or SB (senate bill), and the number which identifies the particular bill, as in HB 1507. Chapter: A term that identifies a group of related state or federal statutes that have been gathered together within a particular Title or Code Chaptered: A bill becomes chaptered if it clears the legislature and is signed by the governor.

UNCONSOLIDATED PENNSYLVANIA STATUTES
A website written and maintained by Thomas E. Martin, Jr., Esq.
This page links laws of Pennsylvania enacted by the legislature, both the Pennsylvania Consolidated Statutes and unconsolidated statutes, arranged according to their customary citation. If the statute you want is not yet listed here, it should be available in the future, so check back. For information on Statutory Citation in Pennsylvania, click here! For six years this website has made available, free of charge, legal information which we believe is valuable to a wide variety of users and is nowhere else available on the web. Every month over 10,000 people use it. However, the work is not funded by any government subsidy. Therefore, requests for printed copies of these statutes or for ones not yet posted here cannot be filled. Similarly, we cannot provide free legal research services or provide free legal opinions. We do not have time to answer and will not respond to emails seeking these. Thank you for understanding.
A word of caution is in order: The laws of each state are different. The following Pennsylvania statutes, though available instantaneously over the web, may not be the current law. We attempt to post statutes which, at the time of posting, have not been repealed, the date of posting usually being referenced at the bottom of each page. However, court decisions overturning them, later statutes amending them, and a host of other factors come into play when interpreting them. They are provided here only as one resource among many available and should not be relied upon by anyone in matters of importance.

Sources of Statutes Subject Arrangement of Statutes Locating Statutes Statutes are laws (or acts) enacted by legislatures. These legislative acts become law with or without the approval of the President. Federal statutes may be published in two formats: public and private laws and codified law. Public and private laws are published in the format that is signed by the two chambers of the United States Congress and the President. Codified law is published in a subject-arranged format. Codes are commonly called current law because a code section consists of the original law that created the code section and subsequent amendments integrated together. Both public and private laws and codified law are available in print and electronic sources. Statutes may be found by using the citation, the popular name, or by subject. SOURCES OF STATUTES Statutes are published in chronological order by date of passage. Most citations consist of the public law number and its location in the

  • Slip Laws
    • A pamphlet containing a single act. It is separately published and designated by a Public Law number (P.L. 92-195).

When the Statutes at Large are published, they supersede the slip law as authority.
    Session Laws
    • Advance Session Laws
      • Commercially published monthly pamphlets containing statutes within a month or two of enactment. West's United States Code Congressional and Administrative News (USCCAN)

2. Constitutions
  • Federal - The Federal Constitution and its index are found at the end of Volume 15. Oregon - The Oregon State Constitution and its index are found at the end of Volume 15. The General Index found in Volumes 16 and 17 duplicate some, but not all, of the index terms found in the index to the Constitution.

Federal Statutes The Public Lands
There is a self-evidence to the laws of the land that makes them suggestive of many things at once: records of asserted national identity, the practical answers to questions that urge a nation toward not only what it hopes to be but what it thinks it is; the framework of a nation, in regard both to its legal bounds as well as to its explicitly sanctioned moral norms; institutional records, the tracks of its attempt to keep up with the society it governs, and to contain the social and economic forces in directing them as national purpose. The following are given as an indication of how federal laws attempted to apply structure to the sense of geographical bounds within the United States during the 19th century, as it developed from the protean confusion of who owned what and where , to the increasingly directed and clarified sense(s) of purpose regarding the establishmentin legal, economic, and cultural termsof the West.
