The "holiday season" has begun. Time to share with family and friends often becomes lots of time shopping, parties and gatherings, food preparation—and stress. Are you feeling "holidazed"? Do you find yourself wondering how the season passes by so quickly? This year, instead of the hustle and bustle of the mall, maybe it's time for a new tradition—a no-waste holiday season. 1 million tons a week to the nation's garbage piles. And it's not just trash. The average American spends $800 on gifts over the holiday season. Think about your time and energy spent driving all around town looking at so much stuff. It's no wonder that so many people get stressed out during the holidays! A recent poll showed that people want to have more personal fulfillment and a less-stressful holiday season. Sometimes the most treasured gifts we can give are our time, love and energy. In the spirit of giving, we've gathered some holiday gift ideas that create less waste and more memories.

Personal thoughts shift from the freedom of summer to those of settling in for the winter, those of celebrations and bonding closer to friends and relatives, and those of inner meaning. Throughout time, human beings, noting these changes in nature, have created rituals to alleviate a fear of the unknown dark and cold and celebrations to rejoice in the onset of warmer weather and blooming plant life. Around the world, developing civilizations contemplated and celebrated each season in an ongoing attempt to explain the recurrence of the seasons. The resulting proliferation of feasts and celebrations across the cultures exemplify these "reasons for the seasons." Ironically, these two occurrences, seasonal changes and their corresponding celebrations, at times can combine to present a quandary for U.S. schools. This quandary is particularly noticeable when the fall equinox brings the realization that the "holidays" are coming.

TECHNOLOGY MANAGEMENT
by Robert M. Hunter, Registered Patent Agent
This document web explains a variety of technology management activities. They include controlling access to invention data, supervision of invention evaluation and disclosure activities, milestone tracking and reporting. Access Control
Intellectual property is most valuable when its owner can control its use. Special care must to taken to control access to patentable intellectual property before a patent application is filed and during the prosecution of the application (i.e., before a patent issues on the application). In addition to legal advantages, commercial advantages can be gained by controlling access to information about new inventions. In general, reasonable measures should be taken to treat such information as a "trade secret" until its release to the public is appropriate. Two types of security should be considered in controlling access to such information: physical security and software security.
Physical Security . Physical security involves controlling access to the physical elements of a technology management system. While a complete discussion of physical security measures is beyond the scope of this document, the following measures are considered appropriate:

My parents raised me to believe that I could be anything I wanted to be and do anything I wanted. They also taught me that the color of a persons skin didn't matter. This may sound very naive to you. But that is always the way I have felt. We are all created equal in the eyes of the Lord. We are all His children. Remember the song from when you were younger all the children of the world....... Red, and yellow, black and white Jesus loves the little children of the world." Some people are born "color blind". Oh, that we could raise our children to be "color blind in their heart". Let us strive to be the kind of people who look at the inside and only see the best in others. As a Christian I am glad that the Lord loves me unconditionally. He sees my heart and knows the secret thoughts along with my past BUT He loves us in spite of it all. "Beloved, let us love one another. For love is of God and anyone that loveth is born of God and knoweth God. He that loveth not, knoweth not God for God is Love. So beloved, let us love one another."
Do YOU know your neighbors? God's Word says to "Love your neighbor as yourself". WOW. If we don't even know our neighbors what does that say about ourselves. A real example of a GOOD Neighbor is the story of the GOOD Samaritan that Jesus told us. Luke 10:29-37

Columbus Day Funology October 12 th Columbus Day is celebrated on the 2nd Monday in October in honor of Christopher Columbus's 1492 discovery of America. For many this is a controversial holiday in that some people believe that Columbus was not a hero. In his conquest of the New World, Columbus often claimed land that already belonged to other people and mistreated the inhabitants of these areas. In many areas Columbus Day now focuses on the discovery of the New World rather than the actions of one man. The first celebration of Columbus Day took place on October 12, 1792 and in 1937 October 12, became a Federal Holiday. President Johnson moved the holiday to the 2nd Monday in October in 1968 to create a three-day weekend. Many celebrate this holiday with parades and parties sponsored by Italian-American groups. A Forum Brief - January 16, 2004
"The end of all education should surely be service to others." Cesar E. Chavez Cesar E. Chavez's values, through his experience in civil rights, labor leadership, crusade for nonviolent social and environmental change and consumer advocacy, provide a platform for localized service-learning programs which promote civic engagement, greater knowledge of democracy, and community involvement among youth. The Cesar E. Chavez Foundation , based in California, has coordinated K-12 service-learning projects under the name Cesar E. Chavez Service-Learning. The foundation has had an ongoing relationship with the California State Department of Education and has coordinated service-learning activities in Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Michigan, Illinois, and Texas. "The Cesar E. Chavez Service-Learning Initiative," said Julie Chavez Rodriguez , the foundation's community program officer and one of Chavez's grand daughters, "is taking Cesar's legacy to the next generation in a direct and meaningful way to develop both active citizens and life-long learners." Ms. Chavez Rodriguez and colleagues described the initiative to policymakers through a Capitol Hill forum sponsored by the American Youth Policy Forum. www.cesarechavezfoundation.org

School Prayer. The Supreme Court first held in Engel v. Vitale (1962) that
the practice of having a prayer recited daily in the classroom, even if non-
denominational, is unconstitutional. This holding has been repeatedly
reaffirmed, most recently in Lee v. Weisman (1992). The prayer at issue in
Engel was composed by the state. Although the opinion makes it appear as if that fact alone decided the case, subsequent cases have held that all school-

Printed in PHS #7, 1994. The weekend of March 26, 1994, my parents, my 17-year-old sister Victoria and I were the keynote speakers for the Oklahoma Central Home Educators' Consociation in Oklahoma City. During two days of speaking to the audiences and answering endless questions from parents, one question kept recurring: "How were you able to earn high school diplomas at eleven, bachelors' degrees at age 15, and master's degrees at age sixteen?" Underlying that basic question, however, were two more fundamental questions, "Why did you accelerate your educations?" and "Would you do this again?" In spite of the rapid pace, however, we never skipped any grades. In fact, we never even skipped a lesson or a part of a day's work. To us, education was not about "getting out of school quickly." It was about earning the best education possible, which meant that our grades had to be excellent and we had to demonstrate that we had really mastered each phase of the material before we moved on to the next. With Mother directing our school, however, we were able to earn l's and 2's Calvert School's equivalent of A's and B's and still complete the work in much less time than would normally be expected. Part of the secret of this acceleration was the twelve-month school year which our family followed. Mother realized early on that with ten children to teach, she did not have time to go back and reteach subjects which we had forgotten over summer vacation. She felt that ultimately it would be easier for us to study year-round. At our house, we had as our holidays from school Christmas Day, Christmas Eve, Thanksgiving Day, the Fourth of July, whatever federal holidays my father had off from work and, of course, every Saturday and Sunday. On all other days, we were expected to be studying at our places at the kitchen table. As a small child, I was really not aware of the concept of summer vacation or spring break-these were carefully guarded secrets in the Swann household. Five days a week, twelve months a year, school was in session and Mother and we were hard at work.

Stop giving thanks and start giving forward
by Sam Dinkin
Monday, November 29, 2004
Thanksgiving is a time of thanking the Pilgrims and the rest of the hearty bunch that allowed the continuing settlement of the United States. I like Squanto, Governor Bradford, the turkey, and all, but we have been thanking them for hundreds of years. Perhaps it is time to stop thanking them and start giving forward. I propose that we replace Thanksgiving with Colonization Day. Many other holidays are backward looking, which is inferior policy and fails to motivate us to new and more ambitious goals. Colonization Day celebrates all the good things that the Pilgrims and the welcoming Native Americans did while changing the tense of the holiday to the forward tense. And the rockets red glare
And the bombs pushing us there
Gave proof through the night
I will work on some of the more brutal verses NASA should price out a one-way flight to Mars and see if there are qualified candidates who are willing to give up their life to advance science, technology, freedom, and civilization by taking a one-way trip to Mars.

How to Move From Pipe Dream to Reality By Catherine Richards
On Lago Maggiore in Ticino, Switzerland If you have a very healthy bank balance, you will find it relatively easy to get a permit for a lengthy stay in Switzerland. The rest of us have two or three options. The easiest option is to fall in love and get married to a Swiss. Understandably, this might not be the most practical option and does seem a bit drastic if you are only planning on staying a year or so. Many non-EU foreign nationals, including Americans, can stay in Switzerland without a permit for tourism or study for up to three months. After this you must leave Switzerland. You can re-enter after a month but only for a further three months - in total you cannot stay longer than six months in any one year. While in Switzerland, you have no right to work, and you cannot look for work. Working visas are available for more than three months but only employers can apply for them. The potential employee cannot enter Switzerland and take up work until the visa is granted. What this means then is that all the job hunting and the application process must be done back home.

Non-represented staff, including unclassified staff, and those represented employees (except Trades and UW-Milwaukee graduate assistants) in the bargaining units covered by 2003-2005 contracts received one additional paid personal holiday beginning in 2004 "in recognition of Veteran's Day." Personal holidays are a subject of bargaining for represented employees that have not reached a 2003-05 contract agreement. The University grants paid leave benefits to eligible employee groups. Employees may earn vacation, sick leave and personal holidays in addition to nine legal holidays. Teaching staff may make use of the Colleague Coverage provision to cover hours in the classroom and student consultation in lieu of sick leave. Employees on an academic year pay-basis do not earn vacation or personal holidays.
