A publication of the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory
Accepting the Challenge: Teaching at the Federal Way Internet Academy
Wendy Nevin and Mike Feuling teach middle- and high school-level courses at the Internet Academy, an online school based in Federal Way, Washington. Both Nevin, an English teacher, and Feuling, a math teacher, were experienced classroom teachers before joining the academy. They spoke with Northwest Education assistant editor Bracken Reed about the challenges and rewards of online teaching. Q: What led you to online teaching? WN : Challenge and change were my motivators. It just seemed like a great opportunity. It was kind of an exciting thing when we first started talking about it, because nobody was doing it. It was a good opportunity to try it and see what was going to happen. Were you teaching in the Federal Way district already? WN : Yes. There was a small group of us that were talking about it for about a year. It started as a conversation about how we could get the homeschool families involved with the district, because there was a real distance between homeschool families and the public schools at that time. They didn't really like public schools, and we wanted to find a way that we could reconnect with them. So we worked with them for a couple years in elementary classes, and then started in the high school after that. And it was probably a year after that that we had people start to write online curriculum for the high school level. And then there were three or four of us that came on full-time in 1998.

THE LANGUAGE CENTRE is recognised as an officially authorised centre of Spanish by the Cervantes Institute, the official organisation for the diffusion and promotion of the Spanish language throughout the world. The University of Alcala de Henares after an exhaustive inspection approved our application, passing the quality control both for teaching Spanish as a foreign language and for the services offered by the Centre. This level of quality is an indispensable requirement for a centre to become part of the worldwide network of the Cervantes Institute. Only authorised centres can use this logo. Requirements to be an authorised centre are:
  • To achieve set standards of quality in the teaching of Spanish To fulfil the legal requirements for teaching Spanish To have adequate resources for teaching To have a team of teachers who have the relevant qualifications and professional training. To possess a teaching programme that guarantees good progress To establish a maximum number of students per class To use advertising which truthfully reflects what is offered To clearly state the price of the course and any additional services To deal with problems and complaints
Periodic inspections are carried out by the Cervantes Institute and the accreditation is renewed every two years.

During the holiday season, there's one thing worse for school board members, school administrators, and school lawyers than finding a lump of coal in their stockings: It's finding a legal complaint. When it comes to public school observance of religious holidays, however, the courts haven't provided a whole lot of legal guidance. For example, only one such case has reached as high as a U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. In 1980, the 8th Circuit upheld a South Dakota school board's policy on holiday observances in Florey v. Sioux Falls School District , a decision the U.S. Supreme Court let stand. There are very few other decisions by federal courts and not many state court opinions, either. The good thing about this paucity of case law is that it suggests there haven't been very many lawsuits over how schools handle religious holidays. The downside is that school attorneys are left to make educated guesses about how to advise their clients about what is legally acceptable.

A simple webquest for younger students in which each child must choose a different story to read. Then they compare and contrast the stories they read to find similarities and differences in them. Finally they write their own tale in a similar style, to share with the others in the group. Kathy/5/IA - Welcome to the Elem/Middle School Focus Chat.
hof - Do any of you use Saxon Math out there?
knight - yes, the high school does use saxon, we use the predecessor, Scott Foresman.
knight - it is supposed to follow the transition from basic math skills to pre-algebra hof - The reason I asked: we switched to Saxon this year: 2-8th grade. It is becoming harder because of the way it is handled. But I still like it. knight - the scott foresman book is really bad. I mean totally worthless. knight - bad examples, the problems are even worse, the only redeeming feature is that there is only 5 to 10 problems with each topic. Kathy/5/IA - I think I use to use Scott Foresman - I don't teach math right now. knight - I am stuck in a "bubble" room right now, have to teach my kids all subjects while the rest of the 6th grade, INCLUDING THE REAL BUBBLE TEACHER, gets to departmentalize Kathy/5/IA - Why is that, knight?

The teaching facilities for the undergraduate medical program were considered weekend hours before exam weeks and on the majority of federal holidays.
    http://www.usuhs.mil/oea/summary/CHAPTER6.htm
    Summary Self-Study Report
Resources for the Educational Program FINANCES FACILITIES Education Since the last LCME site visit, there has been a moderate increase in the number of rooms available for small group teaching sessions by including the utilization of departmental conference rooms for this type of interactive teaching. However, there remains a shortage of rooms to conduct small group teaching. Solutions for this deficit are a high priority for the SOM. The university administration has requested DoD approval for construction of additional teaching space. The construction proposal includes an allotment of space for an additional 30 classrooms to accommodate small group instruction (12-15 students) and case-based problem-solving sessions. These small classrooms will be designed with moveable, soundproof partitions to allow reconfiguration into at least 6-12 rooms for 30-60 students. The SOM, in collaboration with the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, will open a standardized patient center during the 1999-2000 academic year. The center will permit the expansion of patient bases for teaching clinical skills and will provide a mechanism to standardize the teaching and assessment of students’ clinical skills through the use of live and computer simulations. The center will also support the development and use of military medical databases for education and training by the school and the uniformed services. Recently a computer-based mannequin was purchased and developed jointly with the National Naval Medical Center to teach students and evaluate their medical emergency skills. The mannequin, housed on the campus, is designed with more than 20 patient profiles, each defined by 43 specific characteristics, including cardiovascular, pulmonary and metabolic attributes.
