This is the fourth of a four-part reply. Amazing! All those words and not one of them even begins to answer the questions I asked. I'll assume that you must agree with parents allowing their religion to supplant their children's science education. (R) I feel that in a free society, parents must be allowed to make their own choices in this matter. (MB) Nice waffle. Can't you directly answer the question of whether or not these parents are doing their children any favors in the course of "making their own choices"? Before you answer, consider that there is legal precedent for bringing child abuse charges against parents who "make their own choice" and refuse to allow their children to be educated in English.

http://www.usmemorialday.org/act.html
"Changing the date merely to create three-day weekends has undermined the very meaning of the day. No doubt, this has contributed greatly to the general public's nonchalant observance of Memorial Day." VFW 2002 Memorial Day address
Do you think Memorial Day should have it's traditional day of observance restored?
Over the years the meaning of Memorial Day has faded too much from the public consciousness. From a solemn day of mourning, remembrance, and honor to our departed loved ones, it has degenerated into a weekend of Bar B Q's, shopping bargains and beaches where only token nods toward our honored dead is given, if at all. Too many don't know what the day stands for. Memorial Day used to be a sacred day that was reserved for the remembrance of those who paid the ultimate price for our freedoms. Businesses closed for the day. Towns held parades honoring the fallen, the parade routes often times ending at a local cemetery, where Memorial Day speeches were then given. People took the time that day to clean and decorate with flowers and flags the graves of those the fell in service to their country. "Let no vandalism of avarice or neglect, no ravages of time testify to the present or to the coming generations that we have forgotten as a people the cost of a free and undivided republic." General Logan - May 5, 1868

On June 14, 2004, the Supreme Court issued a decision in the Pledge of Allegiance case, Elk Grove v. Newdow , No. 02-1624. The Court reversed an earlier ruling by the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals that teacher-led recitation of the Pledge, when it contained the words "under God," was unconstitutional. The Court ruled that Michael Newdow, the California atheist who brought suit on behalf of his daughter, lacked standing to sue because the child's mother, Sandra Banning, has "what amounts to a tie-breaking vote" on issues related to the child's education. Read more Background Issues involving public schools and religion are perennial topics of heated debate. In recent years, all three branches of the federal government, as well as many state and local governments, have attempted to clarify the appropriate interplay between religion and public schools. And with good reason. This area of constitutional law is a delicate one in which there is a need to distinguish between government-sponsored religious expression that is prohibited and individual religious expression that is protected. In 1995, a diverse group of religious and public-policy organizations drafted a

http://www.afajournal.org/2005/january/1.05tim.asp
"We teach about Thanksgiving from a purely historical perspective, not from a religious perspective," said Charles Ridgell who is the curriculum and instruction director for the St. Mary’s County Public Schools.
Before I get to the absurdity of Charles’ statement here, I must note the irony that this guy works for "St. Mary’s" school system. I would love for Charles to give me the historical background of how the town became known as St. Mary without giving me the religious orientation of the name of the mother of Jesus Christ.
In his Thanksgiving Day proclamation George Washington said: "It is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God to obey His will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor."
Charles and other officials of the Maryland Public Schools are censoring the history of this distinctively American holiday and celebration in the name of separation of church and state. As I have said, this attack by the secular left on the religious values, religious expression and now religious holidays has reached an absurd level. I believe it is an obvious and intentional effort on the part of groups like the ACLU, the National Education Association and others to rid America of her Christian heritage. Some also call it historical revisionism.

Questions To Ponder As Columbus Day nears
1. Columbus sailed into the Caribbean and never even set foot in what is now known as the United States. So, why do we, in the United States, give him one of our 8 Federal holidays?
2. Why would Columbus be given credit for "discovering" the Americas anyway, when we all know those lands were already inhabited and had been for thousands of years? Didn't the inhabitants of those lands discover them? Look at any map of the US and see the many, many, many states, cities and towns that all bear the Native American names of people and peoples who once populated those regions: Illinois, Indiana, Oklahoma, Cheyenne, Nantuckett, Milwaukee, Yuma, Omaha, Wichita, Tallahassee, Mississippi, Muskogee, Tennessee, Allegheny, Missouri, Kentucky, Huron, Tuscaloosa and on and on and on......
