Feeling Happy Fathers day
It's fathers day. Last night at work it struck me "What does fathers day mean to me?" Before it was a day to acknowledge my dad and grandpa even if my communication had been lacking (which it usually is) it stood out in my mind on that day. As I sit here and read the Fathers Day card my stepson Jeremiah has just given me it has struck me that this day has taken on a whole new meaning. In addition to what it meant to me before it is now a reminder that I am responsible for molding two young men into decent (and hopefully Christian) men. To be completely honest that scares the crud out of me. My whole life was really spent worrying about one person, me! Now that person is at the back of the line as far as priorities go. I like the feeling of being able to take care of my family and as long as I look at it one day at a time it really isn't so daunting. It's when I look down the line at teaching them to drive (and teaching them to fill out thier first insurance claim), teaching them to shave, tie a tie, and a host of other things I really don't even want to think about that the responsibility is a little overwhelming.

Men to Spend Fathers' Day Pushing for Women's Safety Run Date: 06/16/04 By Paul R. Charron
WeNews commentator This Father's Day, Paul Charron will join other men in speaking out against domestic violence. The Liz Claiborne CEO says protecting female workers is both a good business practice and the right thing, personally, for him to do. Editor's Note: The following is a commentary. The opinions expressed are those of the author and not necessarily the views of Women's eNews. (WOMENSENEWS)On Father's Day more than 400 men from all walks of life will be recognized for committing to teach boys that violence does not equal strength. These "Founding Fathers," as they are called, are participating in a campaign organized by the San Francisco-based Family Violence Prevention Fund. Now in its second year, this initiative is mobilizing men across the country to take a stand against violence by pledging to serve as role models by teaching boys that violence against women and children is always wrong. Better-known Founding Fathers include such modern day heroes as Joe Torre, the manager of the New York Yankees who founded the Joe Torre Safe at Home Foundation, which develops educational programs aimed at ending the cycle of domestic violence and saving lives. The Founding Fathers initiative is also led by business leaders such as Ted Waitt, founder and chair of Gateway Computers, and Jerome Rossi, president of HomeGoods. Our numbers also include entertainers such as Chris Rock and Bill Cosby and hundreds of others who are fathers, uncles and coaches.

How Do We Forgive Our Fathers?
Dick Lourie* How do we forgive our Fathers?
Maybe in a dream
Do we forgive our Fathers for leaving us too often or forever when we were little? Maybe for scaring us with unexpected rage or making us nervous because there never seemed to be any rage there at all. Do we forgive our Fathers for marrying or not marrying our Mothers? For Divorcing or not divorcing our Mothers? And shall we forgive them for their excesses of warmth or coldness? Shall we forgive them for pushing or leaning for shutting doors for speaking through walls or never speaking or never being silent?

Honoring Your Father
On Father's Day you may get another "interesting" tie, the latest golf gadget or a pair of wild boxer shorts. And then your kids may do something that really makes you feel like a king. Soak it all in, because you deserve it and it's good for your children to honor you.
But as you're celebrating, don't forget that you're also a son, and it's good for you to honor your father or father figure.
There is something in us-written on our hearts-that says, "Honor your father and mother." That's how it's stated in the Bible, but you'll find it in all the world's religions. Ancient Chinese Analects advise, "Surely proper behavior to parents and elder brothers is the [tree] trunk of goodness."
Your father deserves your honor and appreciation for all he means to you-if for no other reason than simply that he is your father. If you feel that he has failed you, honoring him doesn't mean endorsing his irresponsibility, workaholism or abuse; you're not denying what he did wrong or the pain he caused you. Instead, you're choosing to place great value on your relationship with him, recognizing the good he has done and taking initiative to improve the relationship.
Dishonor toward a father is a dangerous form of vandalism. That is true culturally, but also personally. Gordon Dalbey writes, "We had better teach our sons mercy. A man who curses his father ... curses his own manhood."

June 17, 2005
Sunday is Fathers' Day; added kind of as an afterthought to May's Mothers' Day (Mothering Sunday in British sectors), it is intended to honor our fathers. It is always a good time to think about the importance of fatherhood, and who IS a father and is not. Recent articles on Fathers' Day, a barrage of advertising for "Gifts for Dad", and Walt Williams' column on last month's "Click-it or Ticket" campaign all led me to this column of general thoughts, to share with other libertarian friends and readers. Libertarians need dads, too, you know. My own father, though not truly a libertarian himself (perhaps a 70-70 libertarian on the Nolan chart ) was one of the major reasons I am a lover of liberty today: he taught me to appreciate it and fight for it, and taught me how our ancestors had done the same, and that he expected future generations to do likewise. In the past, it has been common to refer to the regulation-ridden modern state as "paternalist," but increasing the term "nanny-state" has gained (deserved) favor: the modern state is much more "maternalist" than "paternalist" – the kind of suffocating mothering caricatured by the alternate "people-personality" of the Heart of Gold on the original Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy." In the past, at least, fathers were more often charactized by Heinlein's hero Felix in "Beyond This Horizon" – "the bunghole theory of child-rearing." Mothers hug and sympathize, fathers use switches and boots (to boot them out, not beat them). Mothers worry about risks, fathers worry about guts.

A Proclamation A special bond exists between a father and his children. On Father's Day, we recognize the important role fathers play in the American family, and we honor them for their strength, love, and commitment. After listening to a church service on Mother's Day 1909, Sonora Dodd proposed a day to honor fathers. She was inspired by the courage and sacrifice of her own father, a Civil War veteran, who reared six children by himself after his wife's death. As others began to celebrate it, the idea for Father's Day spread across America. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson officially proclaimed Father's Day as a national observance. Fathers have a duty to love their children with all their hearts and prepare them to be independent, compassionate, and responsible citizens. A father's words and actions are critical in shaping the character of his children. A fathers love helps teach them right from wrong, explains to them the consequences of bad decisions, and strengthens them with encouragement.

A Proclamation Fatherhood is one of life's most challenging yet fulfilling endeavors. On Father's Day, we honor America's fathers and express our appreciation for all they do to help build a strong foundation for our children and our Nation. We also reaffirm our commitment to supporting fathers and encouraging responsible fatherhood in our society. Fathers have indispensable roles to play in the lives of their children: provider, protector, nurturer, teacher, and friend. Every caring father unconditionally loves his sons and daughters and strives for the best for his children in the future. In seeking to give their children the opportunity to succeed, fathers offer needed strength, guidance, and discipline. Fathers teach their children many basic things in life: how to read a book, throw a ball, tie a necktie, ride a bike, or drive a car. More importantly, they also help instill time-honored values in their children, such as hard work, respect, honesty, and good citizenship. Through their words, actions, and sacrifices, fathers play an important role in shaping the characters of their sons and daughters.

A Letter to Dad
by John B. Isom
Dear Dad,
The third reason I am glad you are my father is because you taught me to appreciate the dignity of honest toil. You made me feel there is nothing more honorable than manual labor. My work today consists of doing things that do not require me to get my hands dirty. I am not yet able to think of my work as being quiet as honorable and as worthy of the rewards that should be given those who work with their hands. Calloused hands, or a shirt wet with sweat, still seem to me to be symbols of high honor.
Were you to take an inspection tour through the communities where I have lived since I left home, for the purpose of checking up on my conduct, I am confident you would not find any unpaid bills or debts, and I feel you would find a good report as to my personal conduct and honesty. Yet, I wonder if I am as honest in the impersonal things of life as I believe my record would prove when limited to personal things?
For example, this week, beginning tomorrow at 9:00 A.M., we will conduct a Vacation Bible School in our church for all the children between the ages of 4 and 17. In the opening exercises of this school we will march in and have the students stand at attention, salute the United States flag, and give the pledge, which is:
"I pledge allegiance to the flag

President Bush Visits HHS to Launch Medicare Rx Tour On Thursday, June 16, President Bush and HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt kicked off the Medicare Rx Tour, a national education campaign about the new prescription drug coverage available to all Medicare beneficiaries beginning in January 2006, to a crowd of American seniors and HHS employees in Washington, DC. "Over the next 11 months, we will spread important news to everyone receiving Medicare. This great and trusted program is about to become even better. Starting this November, every American on Medicare can sign up to get help paying for their prescription drugs," President Bush said. Under the new prescription drug benefit, every person with Medicare can receive help paying for their prescription drugs, with low income seniors receiving as much as 90% off their prescription drug costs. The drug plans will cover generic and brand name drugs obtained from neighborhood pharmacies to mail orders. Seniors will have a choice of drug plans so that they can choose which prescription drug plan best suits their needs. Detailed information about the different prescription drug plans will be available on October 1, and enrollment for the new prescription drug coverage begins November 15.
