Some time ago, a doctor told my wife that she should consider putting our toddler in day care, because she and our son appeared to be too close. The doctor felt that our child was too dependent on his mother. However, this is not the case. Granted there are times when the little one wants to be with his mother all of the time, but usually I'm the one chasing him around the house playing with him. He is very independent, even more so than our first child, who was bottlefed. The health benefits and savings aside, I respect my wife for having the courage and commitment to continue to breastfeed our toddler to give him the best possible advantage of growing up as a healthy, well-adjusted child. Their bond was always close, and since he knows that he can always depend on his mom, my bond with him is even closer. He's developing just fine, and whatever doubts I had about my wife nursing past 24 months go out the window every time I see the smile on my little one's face as he comes running for me, instead of his mom's breast.

A friend of mine recently decided to bottle feed so that her husband could share a role in caring for their baby. This saddened me because I know fathers can be involved with their breastfeeding babies in many other ways. Right from the start my husband, Michael, became involved with our baby, Shane. He was a devoted labor coach who was present at the birth. He has done much to create a warm relationship with Shane since then. Michael carries Shane in the hiking carrier when we go into the woods. Shane likes being so close to his daddy and is able to see many things being up so high. Other times Michael's the only one who can burp the baby. He can also soothe Shane with his deep voice.

For many men, nothing in their lives equals the thrill of watching their babies being born. Becoming a father is a big event. Being a father is something you can do every day. Showing your baby love and affection through holding, cuddling, playing and diaper changing lets your baby know that she is important to you. Babies learn about the world through their senses. The sense of touch is probably the most developed sense that babies have. Holding your baby gently but firmly helps them feel secure. You may worry that the baby is fragile, or that you will drop them. Don't let your fears keep you from enjoying your baby. Close contact with your baby lets them know and trust you. Taking care of a new baby is a learning experience for both mother and father. Because new mothers get so much attention, you may feel left out. Remember you are as important to your baby's development as their mother is. Here are some things you can do as a new father:
* If the baby is breast-fed, bring the baby to their mother at feeding time whenever possible. Change the baby's diaper either before or after the feeding session. Bring the baby's mother a cool drink or help in another way. She needs and will appreciate your support.

The poet's journey begins in the heart. Here is a memoir from a poet that reminds us to pursue writing as much as love. Moving beyond the loss of both his father and brother, E. Ethelbert Miller tells the story of how love survived in his family. When Miller was about ten years old, his father told him how he could have left his mother. Years later, now a writer and a father, Miller looks back on that simple remark and how it shaped him. In Fathering Words

    Albert admits fathering stewardess' child
    By Craig S. Smith The New York Times THURSDAY, JULY 7, 2005 PARIS In what is either a fairy tale come true or a true confession of an expensive indiscretion, Prince Albert II of Monaco officially recognized paternity of a boy born to a French-Togolese woman nearly two years ago, automatically conferring on the former stewardess' infant son the eventual rights to a thick slice of his billion-dollar fortune. The prince, who assumed the Monegasque throne upon the death of his father, Prince Rainier III, in April, issued a statement through his lawyer saying he "has and will continue to face up to his responsibilities" after having fathered the child with Nicole Coste, whom he met in July 1997 on an Air France flight from the French Riviera to Paris. The statement noted that the situation was a private matter and would have no affect on Monaco's future dynastic succession. Monaco amended its constitution in April 2002 to restrict succession to children whose parents are married.

News/Media About SAHDs About Slowlane Fathering: Strengthening Connection With Your Children No Matter Where You Are by Will Glennon Conari Press, 1995 pp. The role of father is one of the most difficult yet rewarding challenges a man can face in his life. Circumstantial difficultiessuch as travel, long hours at work, or divorcemake it all the more important for a father tolearn how to participate in his child's life. Based on the experiences of 100 fathers, 'Fathering' supports men in building a strong bridge to their children by passing on important lessons other fathers have learned: - to listen in a way that children know they are being heard - to show deep love and respect - to stay connected even when physically separated - to advise and discipline, without pushing kids away

AN OVERVIEW AND CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
William J. Doherty, Ph.D., Edward F. Kouneski, M.A., and Martha Farrell Erickson, Ph.D. of the University of Minnesota. September, 1996.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The principal implication for fathering programs is that these programs should involve a wide range of interventions, reflecting the multiple domains of responsible fathering, the varied residential and marital circumstances of fathers, and the array of personal, relational, and ecological factors that influence men as fathers. In particular, fathering programs should:
  • involve mothers where feasible and, especially for unmarried fathers, families of origin;
  • promote collaborative coparenting inside and outside marriage;
  • emphasize critical transitions such as birth of the child and divorce of the parents;
  • deal with employment, economic issues, and community systems;
  • provide opportunities for fathers to learn from other fathers; and
  • promote the viability of caring, committed, and collaborative marriages.

    Sociological and historical work on fathering makes it clear that fathering (at least beyond insemination) is fundamentally a social construction. Each generation molds its cultural ideal of fathers according to its own time and conditions, and each deals with the inevitable gap between what LaRossa (1988) terms the "culture" of fatherhood and the "conduct" of fathers in families. Sociological and historical analyses also make it clear that fathering cannot be defined in isolation from mothering and mothers' expectations, and from social expectations about childrearing in the society, and that these social expectations have been fairly fluid in the United States from decade to decade in the twentieth century. LaRossa (in press) has demonstrated how the culture of fatherhood and the conduct of fathers change course from decade to decade as social and political conditions change.
