Greetings from the Fathering the Future Trust Fathering the Future Trust is a Christchurch based charitable trust that has been set up to raise the profile of fathers in society. Through the work of the Trust we seek to change existing cultures that do not value as parents, in the realms of work, schools and sport. Our vision is to promote a culture where fathers have an active and child centred parenting role. In all that we seek to achieve, we aim to put the welfare of children first. "While we acknowledge that different family structures exist, we believe children develop best with loving caring mother, father and whanau. In the context of all family structures we believe the positive role of the father is vital to the holistic development of the child." Why are dads important? More and more researchers are finding that fathers provide something special in their children’s lives.  For example, recent studies have found:
  • Children whose dads are involved in school do better in school and earn higher wages later. Girls with dads who are close to them are less likely to become sexually active early. Even when dads can’t afford to pay child support, being involved in their kids’ lives has a positive effect on their kids.
Where can I find out more about how dads make a difference? How can I be a great father?

Home About Us Contact Us Subscribe ... Religion Sunday, June 19, 2005 The San Carlos Seminary Fathering future fathers This is San Carlos Seminary (SCS), where priests father future fathers. By Rome Jorge LIKE any other boy’s school, the kids clatter and chatter with their black shoes and their incessant talk in the precious moments between classes. “P’re” is the salutation among peers. The archetypes of school life are present: the bookish nerds with their spectacles, the boisterous class clowns with their loud rants and even a few jocks with their splayed legs marking their expansive personal space. Like most other schoolboys they are homogeneous in their uniforms, leaving only their hairstyle, their backpacks and their shoe brands as regulated means of self-expression. The only hints that this is no ordinary school are the portraits that hang above each classroom and the murals that adorn the walls: they are all of priests. “In an ordinary college, students just study. The school only concerns itself with academic training and the students’ free time is their own. Here in the seminary is where these students live. We concern ourselves with their entire time. They only get to see their family and parish clergy for just a weekend once a month,” explains SCS Rector Edwin Mercado. A soft-spoken man, Fr. Mercado talks with careful pace; he does not pour a deluge of slogans on his visitors but instead lets his words seep in. He clarifies, “We are not a surrogate family. Rather, our fatherhood mirrors that of bishops.”

Reviewed and condensed by Arthur J. Schneider, human development regional specialist, University of Missouri Extension in Cooper County The father-child relationship is especially fragile in American culture. There is a general expectation that mothers should be intimately involved and spend time with their children, but the same is not expected of fathers. Fathers are often relegated to support roles assisting the mother and perhaps coaching a sport. Following divorce, mothers typically receive the majority of physical custody time. This can have a significant impact on the relationships between divorced fathers and their children. Constance Ahrons, who studied 173 children from 98 pairs of divorced parents over a 20-year period, says that society views divorced fathers in a harsh light. In her book, Ahrons presents three divorced father stereotypes: Disneyland Dads Deadbeat Dads are fathers who do not pay child support. Ahrons suggests that unemployment or financial difficulties in maintaining a household and meeting child support are major challenges for fathers.

FFP's Mission and Goals Our Mission: Supporting and Celebrating Fathering The For Fathering Project , an initiative of The Medical Foundation, promotes the value of fathering and celebrates the positive impact it has on dads, children, families and communities. Our Goals - Moving Beyond the Traditional View of Fathering The For Fathering Project reflects the emerging national consensus that responsible fatherhood means much more than being present and providing economic support. Today, responsible fathering means being actively involved in the life of your child and taking a personal interest in your child's day-to-day joys and challenges. It means making a commitment to seek out, learn, and use the skills necessary to nurture your child's growth and development. It means staying connected to your child as she or he enters adolescence and adulthood. In short, it means putting your child first. The For Fathering Project has worked to make this vision of fatherhood the norm, not the exception, by: Our Motivation - Responsible Fathering Makes a Difference For Everyone It is really quite simple Ð when fathers are actively involved, their children will be happier and healthier, more confident, and have stronger self-control and empathy. Is there any better reason for working to support and celebrate fathering? And fathers also end up being healthier, having greater self-esteem and a more positive self-image! It's not hard to imagine that when a dad and his children are happier and healthier, there is a positive impact on the stability of the family and on their neighborhood and community. There's no question about it Ð everyone benefits when dads are fully involved in the lives of their children. The

    Parenting
A Historical Perspective on Fatherhood and Parenting For hundreds of generations, child rearing has been the shared responsibility of both of the biological parents of their children. While the dichotomization of gender roles may have existed in many cultures, that has not generally excluded fathers from parenting roles and responsibilities, which might be defined as teaching, nurturing, supporting, communicating, disciplining and caring for their offspring. A Strong Father Presence: Eighteen Messages for Children Robert Bly has said that one of the greatest problems in American society is the absence of strong fathers. This is true for millions of children whose fathers are either physically, emotionally, or spiritually absent. Love and guidance from a Dad, while no more valuable than the same from a Mom., is different- Strong, loving, nurturing mate role models teach sons what it means to be a man, and teach daughters what they have a right to expect from boys and men.

Jefferson Awards: Larry D. Davis / His fathering instincts set a precedent Tuesday, January 13, 2004 By John Hayes, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette When the woman he'd had a child with told him she didn't want any part in raising the girl, Larry D. Davis took it in stride. When Allegheny County told the Homewood man that he couldn't raise Latosha alone, he successfully fought the system. When his wages were attached to pay support for a child that he was raising at his home, he fought the ruling and won. Larry Davis says the legal system is not set up to accommodate a single father raising a child, as he does with his daughter Latosha. (Annie O'Neill, Post-Gazette)

But the thing that really freaks him out, he says, is biology. "A single guy raising a pre-teen daughter?" He shakes his head and laughs. "Believe me, brother, there's a lot to learn." Fortunately, Davis, 43, is a fast learner. As a result of his efforts on behalf of fathers like him, he is a winner of one of seven local Jefferson Awards given for community service. On Jan. 29 at the Carnegie Music Hall in Oakland, he and the others will receive a medallion, and Kaufmann's will donate $1,000 in his honor to the
