http://www.fatheringthefuture.org/
Welcome to the new home of the Washington State Fathering Coalition Our mission is to improve the lives of children by promoting healthy father-child relationships and increasing positive male involvement. The more we continue to learn about the intricate neurological and environmental complexities shaping our children's development, the more we understand a simple truth. Fathers matter. The Washington State Fathering Coalition is committed to promoting public awareness of the importance of healthy fathering. We are also aware that "fathers" come in all sizes, shapes and with many different links to children. Therefore we view the act of "fathering" as primary to our mission. Our objectives also include improving collaboration and communication between private and public entities that work to strengthen the relationships between fathers and their children, and to foster positive male involvement in children's lives.
Join Us in Banding Together for Washington's Children.
Vision : The Washington State Fathering Coalition is undertaken with the needs of children as paramount to our efforts and will be based upon principles and guidelines that reflect our values of equal respect for the role of mothers and women in the lives of children.

62. Dads Can | Building Father Involvement
Dads Can is a Canadian organization that promotes responsible and involved fathering by supporting men's personal development into fatherhood and healthy fathering patterns in society.
http://www.dadscan.org/
NEW 2004-2005
Many men today feel set adrift from the notion of themselves as "father." Times have changed, and the old, familiar, traditional models of parenting no longer work. Society has not yet evolved a strong and workable new model of parenting, or, in particular, of fathering. Dr. Neil Campbell believes the answer to the question "what is an involved father?" can be found within the experiences and stories of our own lives. In this book he takes us into his life, first as a son, then as a father, sharing some of the profound insights he learned along the way. Neil Campbell, Ph.D., is a nationally recognized advocate of responsible, involved fathering. he is the founder and executive director of Dads Can, and the creator of Dad Classes, a model now spreading across Canada. He is the proud father of two wonderful daughters and an assistant professor at the University of Western Ontario. Self-Help/Parenting

Fathering Adopted Children
"The most important...work you and I will ever do will be within the walls of our own homes." - Harold B. Lee After reading stories and ideas in this section, please take about one minute and give us your evaluation on five feedback questions at the bottom of the page. When asked about a positive experience with his wife, Isaac talked about their spiritual experiences with adoption. Spiritual work is an important part of fathering. In an example of Relationship work , a daughter tells the story of how she was adopted and how much this means to her. In another example of Spiritual work , another father related his spiritual experiences with adoption. "Before all of this happened and before we ever started looking into adoption, my wife one night early in the morning woke up from a deep sleep and she woke me up. She said that she had been awakened by a child calling her and she knew it wasn't either of our two children. It was very distinct and really left an impression on her, and that was when we started looking into adoption. A little later I had a dream one night about a little, blond-haired and blue-eyed boy. I came in the house after work and this little boy took me by the hand and led me through the house, and was jabbering and pointing out things. He was just holding me by the hand and taking me through the house. That was really distinct too. We didn't know what was going on. . .

http://www.civitas.org/fathering.html
The role of dads in the lives of their children has become a hot topic. All of this attention raises an important question: what impact does an involved father have on a child? Consider this:
  • Children with fathers who are involved in their lives tend to develop more self-confidence than children who lack an active father.
  • Children with fathers who are involved in their lives tend to be better problem-solvers than children who lack an active father.
Interestingly, it seems that more dads than moms acknowledge the important role that that fathers play on their children's healthy development. From the survey What Grown-Ups Understand About Child Development Because men tend to interact with their children in unique ways, a mother cannot replace a father's role. However, if a father is not part of a baby's life, the mother can involve other men in her life to help fill the void - including her father, her brother, or male acquaintances to whom she is very close. Fathering Classes: Could You Use One?
by Bruce Linton, Ph.D. If you consider how much time we spend learning about our jobs, sports, and hobbies, it is unbelievable how little we prepare for becoming a parent. In prenatal classes my wife and I attended for our first child, now a teenager, the teacher earmarked 20 minutes to talk about the father's role. I knew I wanted to know more about my feelings and the changes I was undergoing, but I had little opportunity to find out how the other expectant dads in the group were feeling. With nowhere else to turn for male support, I started my own group for new and expectant dads. I drew from my experience as a father, a family therapist, and a participant in a men's group. Now I teach Becoming a Father classes to dozens of men each year at two San Francisco Bay Area hospitals. One thing I've learned — that I try to communicate to the men in my classes — is that fathering isn't something we all do instinctively. It takes time, patience, and perseverance.

Most fathers take an active role as the coach and sometimes even as the punching bag for their spouses during the birthing process. By being involved with the birth process, fathers begin generative fathering even before the child is born (Doherty, 1997) As fathers become more involved in the birth process, they report feelings of closeness to their spouses and to their newborn children. Many fathers remember the first time holding their child as the beginnings of developing a close relationship with their son or daughter. Similarly, many fathers find tremendous joy (and struggles!) when involving themselves in the care of their infants.

The authors promote a fuller understanding of the problems of these fathers and offer an array of strategies for involving them in their children’s lives.
Utilizing a strengths perspective, the authors move beyond the realm of theory to present specific intervention strategies that have succeeded in helping many diverse groups of fathers and potential fathers. These strategies include policy initiatives, program development efforts, and practice approaches that can be used by family professionals, social workers, therapists, policy makers, and administrators.
Throughout the book Drs. Dudley and Stone use case examples to illustrate key program issues. Fathering an infant
For many men, nothing in their lives equals the thrill of watching their babies being born. Becoming a father is a big event. Being a father is something you can do every day. Showing your baby love and affection through holding, cuddling, playing, and diaper changing helps the baby feel secure and important to you. Babies learn about the world through their senses. The sense of touch is probably the most developed sense that babies have. Holding your baby gently but firmly helps them feel secure. You may worry that the baby is fragile or that you will drop them. Do not let your fears keep you from enjoying your baby. Close contact with your baby lets them know and trust you. Taking care of a new baby is a learning experience for both mother and father. Because new mothers get so much attention, fathers may feel left out. Remember a father is as important to a baby's development as a mother is. Here are some things you can do as a new father:
  • If the baby is breast-fed, bring the baby to his/her mother at feeding time whenever possible. Change the baby's diaper either before or after the feeding session. Bring the baby's mother a cool drink or help in another way. She needs and will appreciate your support.
