Uncircumcised
Or How I Spent a Year and a Half Restoring My Butchered Foreskin by Rio Cruz "What in hell is that thing," we asked Tomás. "Looks like something the cat chewed on for lunch." Tomás didn't miss a dribble. "Why'rya laughing at me," he said. "You guys are the ones with half yer dick cut off." As he said this he reeled in, zipped up and strode out the door without even looking back. The weird part was that until that moment I had never realized I had anything missing, that an important part of my anatomy had unceremoniously been hacked off. I just assumed my dick was as nature made it and had never known, until that day, what a real intact penis looked like. It was a revelation beyond the capacity I had at the time to understand.

AP FATHERING
Attachment parenting is a big commitment, one that should not be made by mothers only. Babies need loving responses from Dad, too, along with the special comfort and fun only a father can provide. Fathers also help to nurture their babies by loving and supporting their wives. Attachment parenting does not work as well without an involved and nurturing dad. While mother preference is natural to the baby in the early years, the father is not off the hook. The father creates a supportive environment that allows the mother to devote her energy to baby matters. Besides devoting energy to the incessant needs of a new baby, some mothers try to be all things to all people, carrying on busy lifestyles too soon after giving birth. Burnout is most likely to occur in the most committed mothers - you have to be on fire first in order to burn. Attachment mothers are prone to the "my-baby-needs-me-so-much-I-don't-have-time-to-take-a-shower" mindset. A mother of a particularly energy-draining baby once confided to me, "I couldn't have survived without the help of my husband." Take breastfeeding, for example, which is the only infant-care practice fathers can't do. Yet the father indirectly feeds his baby by helping to care for the mother, who feeds his baby. As one involved husband boasted, "I can't breastfeed, but I can create an environment that helps my wife breastfeed better." "Do you mean that fathers have only a supporting role in baby tending?"

Playing games is important. We teach them how to think, have fun and yes, even how to lose with grace. Lessons can be taught in the course of just playing games. Dad the Family Shepherd has been in existence for over 20 years to inspire and train dads to live out their fathering responsibilities. Conferences have been held in every state and 11 foreign countries. Over 100,000 men have attended these events. Small group resources help men to maintain accountability at a grass roots level. Events are presented live and through video tape.
Dad the Family Shepherd seeks to support the local church by motivating and equipping men to live the Biblical values of fathering.

Fathering XML
Jon Bosak chats about his hopes and concerns as XML grows up
Summary
Jon Bosak, considered by many to be "the father of XML," remains one of XML's guiding lights. In this interview with JavaOne Today reporter and JavaWorld XML columnist Mark Johnson, Bosak expresses his hopes and concerns about the future of XML, discusses his views on the creation of a semantic network, and explains why he believes that the most important benefits of XML are social not technical. Mail this to a friend Advertisement "The father of XML" is the usual title given by the press to Jon Bosak, whose official title is distinguished engineer at Sun Microsystems's XML Technology Center. When asked about this, Bosak will typically cite the contributions of other people in the XML community, particularly those of Yuri Rubinski, late president and co-founder of SoftQuad, who began the first initiatives for "SGML on the Web." Following Rubinski's sudden passing in 1996, Bosak picked up the torch and began to create the community of experts that created XML. Today, two years after the completion of the XML 1.0 standard, Bosak's vision of XML as an open information representation standard guides his current efforts in keeping XML open "to all interested parties."

Genital Mutilation American Style
How a father discovered, too late, that circumcision is not a good thing. by Rio Cruz Most Americans, when presented with the information that approximately 97% of the world's infant male population is not circumcised, are rather astounded. "But I thought everybody was circumcised. I thought it was a medically necessary thing to do," said a friend when I brought up the issue a few weeks ago. "Nope," I replied, "not even close. The foreskin is not a birth defect needing remedy by the A.M.A. Nobody in all of Europe, non-Muslim Asia, or Latin America is routinely circumcised. In fact, the only people who routinely cut off the most erogenous part of their boys' penis are Jews, Muslims, certain tribal groups in far-flung parts of the world and... the United States. Everybody else leaves their sons intact as nature made them." This is a fact. Indisputable. Most leave their girls intact, too.

While there is doubt whether adolescence is as stressful for youth as we once thought, there is considerable evidence that it is a difficult time for parents. In fact, research on life satisfaction showed that the lowest levels of well-being were reported by parents of adolescents, especially fathers. Coupled with the adolescent's physical, social, and emotional growth are complementary changes for the parent. Parents must adapt to developmental concerns that overlap with those of their adolescents. For example, while teens are just entering a period of rapid physical growth, parents have increasing concerns about their own bodies. Likewise, when teens are beginning to look to the future with anticipation, parents tend to feel that their own possibilities are limited. And while teens have their careers and adulthood roles ahead of them, their parents may have reached an occupational plateau. Some of the reasons given for the difficulties of parenting an adolescent include loss of control over the adolescent and fear for the adolescent's safety due to increased independence. The primary reasons cited for parental stress include the adolescent's push for freedom, failure to follow parental advice, and deviant behavior. There are many challenges to face as the father of an adolescent, but remember you are important to your child. A 1996 Gallup Poll indicated that more than 90% of the respondents agreed that "fathers make unique contributions to their children's behavior." So, Dads, don't give up!
