O ptimism abounded during the post-war years of the 1950s. The focus was on the baby-booming family and being a good housewife which was the ultimate measure of success. T he United States had emerged victorious from another bitter war. Television was now in many households, and the TV culture of I Love Lucy and The Honeymooners reflected ideals of the time. Stars such as Marilyn Monroe, Brigitte Bardot, and Elvis Presley introduced a smoldering sex appeal into an age of conservatism. C onsumerism became a popular pastime in the 1950s, as the post-war boom provided a sense of economic optimism. New gadgets and gizmos proclaimed the future was here and liberated women from many onerous household tasks. Homemaking, it seemed, was not so bad when you had electric stoves, vacuum cleaners, refrigerators, and the like. Women could now concentrate on making a comfortable home for their families, and still have time to have a life outside of the kitchen. T he constant rounds of barbecues, cocktail parties, and other social events all required dressing up. Christian Dior’s 'New Look' influenced fashion, but so did the conservative elegance of Coco Chanel. Charles Jourdan introduced a new kind of shoe style, the stiletto heel, in 1951. As time went on the goal was for the slimmest possible heel, eliminating earlier "chunky" styles. The pump was the basic shoe, but its toes might be cut, the vamps curved or cut in enticing 'V's, or the heels molded into a variety of shapes. Every color of the rainbow was used; shoes were intended to match an outfit perfectly.

T he period between 1901-1910 is often called the Edwardian Era after Queen Victoria's successor, King Edward VII. Sophisticates and the French also refer to this time as La Belle Epoque, or "Beautiful Age," as there was a definite leaning toward classical aesthetics. It was an era of beautiful clothes and the peak of luxury living for a select few: the very rich and the very privileged through birth. In retrospect we can see it is an era very separate from the 20th century despite belonging at its start. The attitudes and lifestyles of two decades were swept away by war and because the war was so huge in its impact, a new socialism and sense of personal identity was born. The masses started to reject the concept of privilege as the reason for a better life. Clothes worn after 1915 could probably be worn today in certain circumstances, but clothes before then are more in tune with the elaborate clothes of 1770 and would only be seen today at a costumed event or as bridal wear. Paris was the absolute mecca of the fashion world, Picasso was in his blue and pink period, the Wright brothers were making aviation history, and San Francisco was devastated by an earthquake in 1906. Photography reached a heyday and the first narrative film

A Historical Outline
history@fashionindia.net
Any account of historical Indian costumes runs into serious difficulties not for want of literary evidence or of archaeological and visual materials: of both of these there is a fair measure that is available. The difficulty arises when one tries to collate the information that can be culled from these sources. The descriptions in literary works, for all their great poetic beauty and elegance, are, in the nature of things, not precise and one has to guess and reconstruct. Sometimes the descriptions are so general that they can fit more than one costume quite different from each other. All this is not to say that a broad, general idea cannot be formed of the kinds of costumes worn in the ancient, medieval or the late medieval periods in India. What one is denied is the possibility of going into the many subtleties that Indian costumes possess. Their range is remarkably wide, according to the great size of the country, and geographical differences, and the bewildering diversity of its ethnic groups is added the complex factor of the coming in, at regular intervals, of foreign peoples into India at different periods of time and in varying numbers. The costumes that these people brought along did not stay necessarily apart from the mainstream of Indian dresses - that one could have dealt with - but, with the Indian genius for adaptation and modification, these costumes become altered, even metamorphosed, and eventually assimilated to the broad, native Indian range of dress.

But, says Annabel Jane Wharton, the Hilton Hotels were also designed for political impact "Each of our hotels," conrad Hilton once said, "is a little America." In the years following the Second World War, businessmen and tourists in Europe and the Middle East could retreat from the disturbingly alien into the comfortable familiarity of a Hilton Hotel, with its efficient, English-speaking staff, functional transatlantic telephone lines and, most fundamentally, air-conditioned modernity. For the economically exhausted local population, these same features lent the Hilton a utopian aura. Here was a space of luxury and promise, a space that realised, permanently and prominently, the new and powerful presence of the United States.

History of 20th Century Fashion
By Elizabeth Ewing and Alice Mackrell
Normal price:
Summary
One of the most dynamic, exciting and innovative periods in the history of fashion, the 20th century was a time of dramatic change and reinvention. This comprehensive sourcebook traces these changes, from the elegant attire of Edwardian ladies, through World Wars I and II to the youth explosion of the 60s and 70s, and from the anarchic era of Punk to the street culture of today.
Information on the social, economic and technical developments of the century have been extensively and thoroughly researched, and provide the reader with a detailed understanding of the processes behind this fashion revolution.
The first edition of this standard reference work established itself as required reading for all those interested in the development of the fashion business. History of 20th Century Fashion covers more than other books on contemporary dress: it gives particular weight to the commercial organization of the industry – from designer and textile manufacturer right through to the consumer.
This fully revised and updated guide follows the story up to the end of the century, bringing fashion history vividly to life with new text, illustrations and stunning photography.

In 1900 a signal event was added to the history of fur in fashion. For the first time, fashion was featured in a major international exhibition.
http://www.furcouncil.com/english/industry/history/history1.htm
A Brief Fashion History of Fur Fur has a longer history than any other material for clothing. Our prehistoric ancestors valued animals' pelts for their warmth; in the Middle Ages furs were so prized that their use was restricted by law to certain classes. Even in our days, furs remain for many people a coveted possession, signifying comfort and luxury. Though modesty dictated the wearing of furs in the Garden of Eden, and protection from cold was one reason for primitive man's first use of skins for clothing, the beauty of fur was always appreciated. Furs were the first means of adornment mankind knew, the first status symbol by which he could establish leadership or prowess. In early tribal societies leaders were distinguished by the wearing of particularly splendid furs either for ceremonial or warlike purposes, leaving the commoner and less handsome pelts to their followers. It is probable therefore that the first man who a local resource for exotic furs was the world's first trader and merchant, the originator of one of mankind's most important endeavours.

WOMEN'S FASHION HISTORY EXPLORED IN NEW EXHIBITION
Exhibit depicts the history of Atlanta's women through clothing
Bicycling ensemble, ca. 1895. Like other physical activities, the bicycling craze of the 1890s required special clothing. While some women donned bloomer costumes, an early type of trousers, many shied away from this controversial style due to its association with the suffrage movement. The heavy leather trim at the skirt of this wool tweed ensemble helped ensure modesty, even on windy days. Worn by Sarah Frances Grant Slaton. Photo by Jonathan Hollada; Atlanta History Center E xpanding on the idea that fashion both reflects and defines the
moment in which it was created, the Atlanta History Center has produced a
new exhibition depicting the lifestyle and costume changes of Atlanta women.
