Men's Fashion Through The Decades
By Julianne Barnes
Fashion Commentator - Every 2nd Tuesday
From white wing collars to retro-influenced trends, men's fashion has been born, changed, and reborn time and time again. The colors, fabrics and patterns are constantly reappearing as men's positions in society are altered. And men's clothing has always been directly affected by outside factors. War, world events and eventually the younger generation all impacted the men's world of fashion. Here is a brief timeline of men's styles from the early twentieth century, when clothing was smart and simple, to the new millennium, a melting pot of previous fads that are all meshed together. a quick run-down
It was a time when men still wore distinguishable "daytime" and "evening" attire. Sacque suits were worn with shirts in mellow shades of putty, peach and cedar. The "always-suave" tailcoat, with perfectly starched white shirt underneath, was regularly accompanied by a top hat and black patent leather shoes, and comprised formal evening wear (men always looked so debonair in these dressy duds). In 1925, baggy pants were first introduced, and flannel became the fabric of the era (baggy flannel pants... hmm... I believe they'll make a comeback in a few decades). Knickers were also the latest in casual wear for the well-dressed gentleman, and are still worn occasionally today.

French Designer With MD Makes Fashion History
By Joelle Diderich PARIS, Fed 14 (Reuters) - Young fashion designer Lucie Carrasco had to overcome the usual hurdles to stage her first catwalk show in Paris sleepless nights sketching outfits, searching for financial backers, finding a suitable venue. It's a ruthless world at the best of times, but Carrasco has been forced to deal with an extra challenge. She suffers from muscular dystrophy, a disease that causes the muscles to wither and waste. The 20-year-old's debut in a gilded salon at the opulent Hotel Crillon on Wednesday featured statuesque models in slinky gowns and see-through mini-dresses, and was met with a standing ovation. "Sensuality is very important," the red-haired designer, who is confined to a wheelchair, told reporters after the show. "I was confronted with the problem of beauty at a young age, and it's true that I have always had a passion for beauty."

THE 1920'sFASHION HISTORY INTRODUCTION: You may have noticed that some things in the world seem to change very quickly. For example, television programs and popular musical groups may not last for more than a year or even a few months. Fashion, also, can change from season to season, particularly among young people who are searching for their own special style. You can probably think of some things you used to wear that are no longer in style. Maybe you have laughed at pictures of yourself or your older relatives wearing outfits from only a few years ago that now look silly and old-fashioned. In this unit, you will learn about a time in United States history when fashions changed in just such a rapid manner. You will read about some of the reasons for those quick changes and the connections between historical events and the way that people dress. This exciting period happened within our own century but long before you were born. It is called The 1920's. In the time before the 1920's, women did not have as much freedom as they do today. They were not allowed to vote, attend certain schools, or enter certain professions. Most women lived with their parents until they were married. A woman who wanted to live on her own or control her own life might be considered odd or even dangerous. Their clothing also did not allow them much freedom. They wore long, heavy skirts with many layers and tightly-fitted, high-necked, long-sleeved blouses. Their long hair was piled on their heads and held in place with many pins. Underneath, they wore tightly-laced corsets that often prevented them from breathing deeply. A woman might expose her arms or throat in an evening dress, but she would never show her legs. Pants for women did not exist, except for the bloomers they wore under their skirts.

Costume The Art of the Tailor
Robert Doyle
For The Art of the Tailor , Robert Doyle draws upon his years of teaching and practical experience with both historical and contemporary clothes, to offer this careful explanation of the tailor's and cutter's processes. By retracing the historic orgins of garments and the manner in which they were made in historic centuries, he explains how, in this present century, these techniques have been adapted, developed and refined. Illustrated throughout with detailed patterns, this veritable encyclopedia is the ultimate one-stop overview of the tailored garment; a must-have for any costume workshop. Hardcover, 518 pp. $78.00.
Robert Doyle
Corsets have always been considered the "problem garment" for performers simply because it has been poorly fitted. Consequently, whomever has cause to wear this curious garment has developed an aversion to it. Robert Doyle's wonderful book seeks to forever rectify this problem by adapting the corset's classic design for the 20th century body. Costume designers will fall in love with this clear and sensible guide to creating any corset styled garment. Softcover, 235 pp. $56.95.

The 1920s was a decade notorious for scandalous changes in fashion, drinking habits and Mafia activity. Some things deserve to be forgotten by history.
http://www.metroactive.com/papers/sfmetro/04.17.00/fashion2-0014.html
Features Index San Francisco MetroActive Central Archives You've Come A Long Way, Baby! A century of fashion innovation, novelty and faux pas By Dara Colwell While fashion largely remains in the eye of the beholder, clothing has always served its purposebe it social, sexual, cultural or individual. Since man evolved from his naked-ape status (and because nudity is often perceived as a threat), he has cloaked himself in threads, accentuated this, minimized that, tucked those neatly away and managed to avoid sitting on cold surfaces unprepared. Now that we've arrived at the early 21st century, marked by a casual chic as disposable as our income, fashion will no doubt take new, unexpected turns. But one thing remains certain: Western fashion has gone through such rapid changes and bizarre extremes that looking back inevitably evokes morbid fascination. The 1920s was a decade notorious for scandalous changes in fashion, drinking habits and Mafia activity. It was the era of sheiks and shebas, smart debutantes smoking with abandon in public, and the streamlined, curveless figure. Skirts fell sordidly short, between the knee and mid-calf depending on the season, and formal clothes hardly differed from casual ones. Clothing was straight, hairstyles were tomboyishly short and fashion was much less restrictive, giving both sexes ample room to run when the cops crashed the local speakeasy. Or the Mafia. Or the FBI. You get the picture, right, doll? Let's skip to the bouncy and bubbly '50s (the previous two decades everyone dressed like their parents), a time when button-through cardigan twin-sets were all the rage. Full-length, shawl-collared coats and furs draped glamorously across the shoulders of starlets. Women waltzed into rooms, capturing male attention, in full, wide skirts layered in taffeta, while men, who surprisingly still dressed like their fathers, wore casual sweaters. It was the Cold War decade and the accompanying knitwear was seemingly appropriate: chunky wool sweaters, mohair sweaters and cable sweaters. Turtle and polo necks came later. Of course there were also the incredibly engineered bullet bras, which will likely cause us to mix metaphors, so we'll mention them only in passing.
