Fashion history: the evolution of style
Highlighting key moments in the story of fashion and the evolving silhouette from the 19th century corseted hour glass figure and the birth of haute couture, travelling into the 20th century modernist look of the flapper, thirties Hollywood inspired bias cut glamour, the austere years of forties fashion with rationing and 'make do and mend', the romance of Dior's New Look after the war through to the explosion of youth culture and legacy of street style.
This course will provide a visual language of fashion reviewing the cyclical nature of styles through a solid grounding in cultural and historical studies. The course aims to reflect upon the influence of the past upon contemporary fashion design. The recycling of styles is a phenomenon of the fashion industry, referring to the past and creating a new aesthetic. The tutor will blend themes and topics into a stimulating programme, which will encompass illustrated lectures, provide an opportunity to visit current exhibitions and museum collections, and where possible view original pieces from the costume stores.

Introduction
The benefits of taking Family and Consumer Science classes are it builds self-esteem through the knowledge of applicable skills that can be used in later stages of life, for example, as a vocation or possible career, a better understanding of how clothes are influenced by styles of the past, gain an insight into fashion that will satisfy both immediate and long range goals, improving social skills and decision making skills, selecting appropriate clothing for different occasions, personal satisfaction, and increased understanding of history, literature, and art to build knowledge about artist and designers. In today's society, images of fashion can be seen all over, but are strongly displayed in the media with television, music videos, commercials, and other means. We as people within society are human billboards for companies to display their name and logos. Trends have been set throughout history changing from decade to decade. Society has given the impression that in order to fit in or be cool, you should own and wear designer labels. Those who wear Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klien are more likely to fit in than those who chose to wear no name clothing. We also look to entertainers throughout the media and major fashion trends to determine our look. Being original with style is not as common and trends set back in the 1970's are returning to main stream fashion. Fashion is for everyone, but a sense of style is individual and personal. I believe that if we had a better understanding of fashion history, we would be less likely to follow trends and be trend setters.

America 1920-1929: Fashion
American History Study Guide Overview Force of Fashion. In his 1928 study Economics of Fashion Columbia University marketing professor Paul H. Nystrom declared, "Fashion is one of the greatest forces in present-day life. It pervades every field and reaches every class. . . . It has always been a factor in human life but never more forceful, never more influential and never wider in scope than in the last decade, and it gives every indication of growing still more important." For Nystrom fashion included men's and women's clothing, of course, but also their cosmetic and hygiene products, their automobiles, and their household appliances and furnishings. Fashion, Nystrom said, was more than an expression of individual taste; it was instead a statement of group membership, of involvement in the currents of one's time. "To be out of fashion," he wrote, "is, indeed, to be out of the world." Communication.

History American History
America 1960-1969: Fashion
American History Study Guide Overview A Time of Transition. The 1960s were a time of transition in every aspect of American life, and the world of taste and fashion was no exception. To move from conservative Jacqueline Kennedy dress suits, large American- made cars with tail fins and gargantuan engines, built-to-last American modern sofas, and pure-form glass-box buildings to thigh-high miniskirts and dirty blue jeans, small foreign cars, pink disposable plastic chairs, and gaudy Las Vegas-inspired building facades in a matter of one short decade is a phenomenon that only a society charged with a sense of restlessness and turmoil could experience. Those volatile changes in taste and fashion, of course, mirrored what was happening in society as a whole. Materialism.

Couture: then and now
Clothes define people. A person's clothing, whether it's a sari, kimono, or business suit, is an essential key to his or her culture, class, personality, or even religion. The Kyoto Costume Institute recognizes the importance of understanding clothing sociologically, historically, and artistically. Founded in 1978, the KCI holds one of the world's most extensive clothing collections and has curated many exhibitions worldwide. With an emphasis on Western women's clothing, the KCI has amassed a wide range of historical garments, underwear, shoes, and fashion accessories dating from the 18th century to the present day. Showcasing a vast selection from the Institute's archives of skilled photographs depicting the clothing expertly displayed and arranged on custom-made mannequins, Fashion History is a fascinating excursion through the last three centuries of clothing trends. The KCI believes that "clothing is an essential manifestation of our very being" and their passion and dedication positively radiate from every page of this book.
