Decade intertwined fashion, fads and film into popular culture
By Albany Gault Published: Friday, September 10, 2004 In 1990 the top ranked movie was "Home Alone," starring a young Macaulay Culkin. The film grossed over $285 million in theaters. Culkin also introduced the world to the Talkboy, a gadget that manipulated recorded voices.
In 1995 "Toy Story" topped the box office, grossing nearly $200 million. The decade's big winner, however, was Titanic (1997), starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, which raked in an incredible $600,788,188.
Other favorites included "Sister Act" (1992), "Jurassic Park" (1993), "White Men Can't Jump" (1992), "Forrest Gump" (1994), "Boyz N the Hood" (1991) and "The Bodyguard," which starred Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner.
Girls in need of fashion advice turned to "Clueless" starring Alicia Silverstone. Trends such as baby doll dresses, thigh-high stockings and Mary Jane shoes were popularized by the movie.

Reunion High Home Fashion and Fads Twiggy, 1967 1950's to Present Throughout most of the 50's the feminine hour glass figure was embellished. This "New Look" was derived from French fashion designer Christian Dior. This style was a celebration of femininity after the dark days of W.W.II. A full billowing long skirt was topped off with a fitted top that showed off the bust and narrowed at the waist. Hats and gloves were essential accessories. Other different and derivative styles popular in the 50s included: two piece bathing suits; circle-skirts, bobby sox and ponytails; sack dresses; women wore pants outside the home, hooded dresses; short shorts; poodle hair styles for women; pink clothing for men and women; duck tail and apache hairstyles for men. Famous redheaded supermodel Suzy Parker displayed many of the decades fashions. Youth fashions could be broadly classified as preppy and rebel. Preppy styles might include a ponytail, circle-skirts and bobby sox for girls and a crew cut with loose fitting jeans and khakis with a button down collar shirts for boys. More rebellious youth might wear black leather jackets, undershirts with rolled up sleeves, duck tails and tight jeans.

#LS-24500, Price $89.00 VHS DVD Clothing choices play a role in almost every social problem from school violence and drugs to poverty and gangs. To many, the word "fashion" means Paris, models, and high prices. In reality, fashion is basic self-expression for the only animals on the planet who wear clothes. People don't merely wear clothes, they wear stories. They use style and fashion to tell the tale of their lives. This video explains that for youth, fashion is an attempt to reconcile two seemingly contradictory messages"I'm unique" and "I belong." Watch articulat and youthful commentators explain their own clothing choices.

Female Fashion Trends, Fads and Fast Moving Fashions 2005
The possible fashion fads and trends suggested in these pages here for 2005 are related to female styling only. These pages are my analysis, personal opinion and fad prediction of the next common new fashion themes we are likely to adopt. (Page written early Jan 2005) What is clear is that A NEW SILHOUETTE IS EMERGING AND IN COSTUME HISTORY TERMS IT MAY WELL THE MAIN OUTLINE THAT DEFINES THE NOUGHTIES. This new silhouette is neat and small at the top, but much fuller in the lower half. A long known fashion fact is that a season's main look always hinges on 4 or so key pieces. Choose the correct key piece for you and your body whilst camouflaging your imperfections. The secret to getting a look that suits you is in simply picking out the bits you like, rather than going overboard on the whole look. Less is always more.

[Photo by Timothy D. Sofranko] Every era has its trends, and those who buck them. Today, when it comes to fashion, many Colgate students are conventional, says Elisa Benson '06, a Maroon-News columnist. "The general Colgate student is well-dressed and brand name-oriented." Many follow a 21st-century interpretation of the early 1980s clean-cut "preppy" look, with popular items being Lacoste shirts, pearl earrings, flowered Vera Bradley bags, khakis, and puffy ski vests. Yet, to be sure, not everyone "pops their collar" on campus. As San Francisco native Tiffany Chu '07 observed: "When I first came here, I was like, `Why is everyone wearing their grandmother's jewelry and using their grandmother's bag?' My friends and I have more urban wear." Wearing long, dangly earrings and men's ties as belts or hair ties are also popular items with female students. And in a scan of students traipsing the stairs alongside Little Hall, the occasional head of purple hair will pop out. "Also, everyone has so much pride in Colgate, we wear a ton of Colgate attire. I was hanging out with some friends this summer and they wanted to know why I had so much Colgate stuff," Chu remarked. In fact, 47 percent of students asked own one popular item: a belt with the Colgate seal woven into it.

Foods
Lunchtime is a great time to catch up with your friends, review those math notes, or just unwind from a busy morning of classes. Make the most of it by packing (or buying) delicious and nutritious school lunches.
  • Get in the habit of packing (or helping your guardian pack) your lunch the night before. It saves time in the morning (when you're probably running around looking for matching socks!) and allows more time to plan meals. Tired of turkey? Peanut butter and jelly passe? Try spreading veggie cream cheese on whole wheat bread and topping with sliced carrots, cucumbers or tomatoes. Hummus, a zesty Middle Eastern spread, is great on pita bread with sliced carrots or sprouts. Knock out soda from your routine. Try juice, water, or one of those cool, new yogurt shakes instead.

1910's Fads and Fashion
Some of the fads and fashions of the 1910's may seem strange to us. The woman's hair was often put up in hats and turbans with close cropped hair underneath. The hemline of their fashionable skirt became higher and rose above the ankles. This was partly because women began to work in the garden and using cars more often. They needed a higher skirt so the material didn't get in the way of the accelerator or brakes. The skirts of women also became narrower.
The fashion for men stayed quite the same as in the 1900's. Black suits were quite popular. Also, on a more casual day, they would wear trousers with suspenders. A look they often wore were arrow collars, but they didn't have any special way to fix their hair.
A look that became popular because of ballets was the Arabian look. One of the ballets that used this look was Scheherazade. The 1910's were really simple on style. Society dressed according to what was excepted in society and morally correct.

IN This style of tennis shoes is in this year. Every one is wearing this style with the thick soles. OUT This style of tennis shoe is out . People were wearing this style last year, but now they aren't. If something is " in ", it is very popular or fashionable with a lot of people at the same time. If something is " out ", it was popular before (last year, for example), but it is no longer popular.
Examples:
Long skirts were in last year, but they are out this year. (Long skirts were popular last year, but now no one is wearing them.)
I think short hair is in this year. All my friends are getting their hair cut very short. Long hair just doesn't seem to be as popular this year. Other ways to say something is popular
Other expressions can be used to talk about things which are popular or fashionable with a lot of people at a given time. Here are some examples written by students from Japan.

I think the best records capture the times they were done in- with techniques, sound and the all important 'spirit' 'soul' 'vibe' whatever you want to call it..when someone talented is flowing and resonating with expression.
I'm listening to a Billy Holiday compilation at the moment. I think it stands up proud. I also think Bjork has recorded some stuff that will cause tingles and heart murmer's for many moon's to come. Just 2 examples.. C.Lambrechts

Mood Rings and Bell Bottom Pants Mood Rings People of the 1970’s had their own unique fashion. People grew their hair long. Some people even had Afros. People wore wide Bellbottoms and Hip huggers. People wore platform shoes and wallabees which was the comfort shoe of the 1970’s. They also wore Velour shirts and Disco shirts. The newest thing in the 1970’s were mood rings. Mood rings came about during the early 1970’s. These rings were a way for people to express their moods. The ring would change color according to your body temperature. Golden Yellow meant that you were tense, blue meant that you were happy, purple meant you were moody, black meant you were down, reddish brown meant you were insecure, clear meant you were a fraud and green meant that you were easily amused. Joshua Reynolds invented mood rings. These rings contained a heat sensitive liquid crystal encased in quartz. Through mood rings people had another way to assert their independence. They were able to let everyone known the way that they were truly feeling. People were able to have fun and express themselves through mood rings.
