Fashion Victims Do you wear your sequined cape, cowboy boots, gypsy skirt, head scarf, camisole top and designer shades at the same time? F ashion trends are great in small doses, but overkill is the death of true style. However, there are ways to avoid overdosing on trends and becoming a slave to fashion. I t is easy to become overly excited when a new fashion trend emerges. With are excitement fuelled by a media barrage of designers, magazines and celebrities all endorsing the new fashion look, we can be tempted to try out these fads, often resulting in disastrous consequences. If you need proof look no further than the current trend for skinny jeans. While perfectly acceptable on the likes of Kate and Sienna, the rest of us mortals who are not blessed with the long lean limbs of these style queens should steer clear, but will we? B y relying too heavily on the media to rule your wardrobe, you run the risk of being a fashion victim. It is important to remember that most fashion magazines and television programs about fashion produce an “apirational” effect. They present you with fabulous clothes you’ll want to buy, on fabulous models you’ll want to look like. The problem is that you probably can’t afford any of the clothes they feature and if you can you probably aren’t going to look like the supermodel or celebrity modelling the garments. It’s important to also remind yourself that celebrities often overdo trends for maximum photo impact, the future Mrs Wayne Rooney and Victoria Beckham are your key culprits here.

  • Program Overview
This is a general description of the Fashion Design Program.
  • Course List
The course list is a complete list of the core curriculum for the FADS program.
Program Overview Fashion design provides you with a key for entering the glamorous world of fashion! Create your own designs, work with beautiful fabrics, plan for major fashion shows, and initiate a "new look." The Fashion Design specialization is flexible to permit a minor in another subject. Depending on your special interest, you might choose from such areas as art, business, merchandising, or a broad-based background that will enhance your career opportunities. An important part of the program is the senior internship, a time when you can gain practical experience before graduation. Fashion design students have a number of special opportunities at Texas Tech. Field trips are available to nearby clothing and textile manufacturing plants and the Dallas Market Center. Other tour opportunities are provided throughout the program of study. Students have access to well-equipped laboratories for fashion design and production, as well as a museum on campus which features an extensive collection of historical textiles and fashions. Career opportunities for graduates may include designing couture or mass-produced fashions, pattern drafting, pattern grading, fashion illustration, fashion coordination, or styling. Those who have minor in business, mass communications, or art further expand the range of possible positions in industry - from designing, fabrics to owning, managing, or operating a private business.

HULA HOOP Richard Knerr and Arthur "Spud" Melin, founders of the Wham-O Company, are the architects of the biggest fad of all time - the hula hoop!
In 1957, an Australian visiting California told them, quite casually, that in his home country, children twirled bamboo hoops around their waists in gym class. Most of us would have thought, "how nice" but for Knerr and Melin an idea spawned.
They understood how popular such an item could be and proceeded to manufacture one made of plastic, Marlex specifically, a lightweight but durable plastic then recently invented by Phillips Petroleum. The name "hula hoop" came from the Hawaiian dance its users seemed to imitate. Talk about sales! Wham-O sold 25 million hula hoops in two months. Almost 100 million international orders followed. They were manufacturing 20,000 hoops a day at the peak of popularity. The faze was short-lived. But our young entrepeneurs were already onto another hot idea they had.

What we wear, what we say, and what makes us a little crazy tells a lot about a culture. The Fifties was fundamentally a time of conformity. You won't find anything wild or risque on these pages. But the Sixties were groovy baby. Styles in all things reflected the social turmoil of the decade. About FASHION. Sorry, kids, but Grease was a movie. Most kids didn't look quite that cool. We dressed very conservatively. What is shown on these pages is an accurate representation of Fifties clothing. The Sixties require some subdivision. The changes evolve into a style revision from the early part of the 1960s to the latter. Special attention must be paid to both hippie clothes and mod fashions. About FADS.
