Fashion Fads
Presenter: Michaela Carr Friday, 18 June 2004 Lava lamps along with yo-yos and hot pants were favourites from yesteryear. Nowdays children spent a lot of time watching DVD's and messaging friends on their mobile phones however for many of us frisbees, rubix cubes and hula hoops were the order of the day. Recently listeners to the Breakfast Program shared their favourite fashions and fads from the past. Lava lamps, safari suits, ironing hair, flares, fluffy dice, petticoats and tennis headbands just to name a few. Popular Culture fanatic Grant Stone loves reflecting on past trends and wanted to join in the discussion and bring his vast knowledge of yo-yos and hot pants to the forum.

Fashion fads are embarrassing
Clay's Crank; by Clay Stimeling, columnist
Published: Friday, April 22, 2005
I'm going against the status quo, ladies and gentlemen, and refusing to write a farewell column, as to spare you, loyal Parthenon reader from reading convoluted text about my personal accomplishments during the last semester.
Even though the idea has indeed crossed my mind of how cool it would be for the Marshall community to read about how good of a DJ I am, and how I can remove a bra in five seconds on LIVE radio. I also thought it would be a bright idea to list my radio production awards, but alas, it isn't worth wasting valuable time that you, the reader, are applying to this fine publication. Instead...
I hate "popped collars." This new fashion fad is truly as annoying as the new "whistler" exhaust pipes people are putting on their cars, or even last Christmas' Clay Aiken special. Here we have men and women wearing perfectly fine shirts with collars, but instead of wearing them in the proper down position, they decide to "pop" them as if to say to the world "hey - I'm too lazy to iron my collar! I'm HIP!"
But of course, what do I know about fashion, right? My wardrobe consists of free radio station T-shirts and tattered blue jeans. I guess I'm no Gucci or Tommy Hill-whatever. For crying out loud, though, do we really want our children looking back at photographs of us in shirts with our collars not in the correctly stowed position? I know I don't.

Heidi Taff Asst. Entertainment Editor -Wednesday, October 02, 1996 What does an American look like? What fads and fashions have we adopted into our heritage throughout the decades? To try and describe one common element would be a waste of breath. Chico State University's Museum of Anthropology's twelfth annual photo competition and show entitled, "America in Style: Fads and Fashions," documents Americans' true style through color and black and white photographs. Photos from all over the United States have been chosen and put on display for both their anthropological value as well as artistic content. On display are family snapshots as well as staged photos of grooming habits, jewelry and scenery landscapes. There were numerous photos of people in hats. Hats represent a big fad in America. People wear them to sport their favorite athletic team, to keep the sun out of their eyes, rain off the hair and countless other reasons. "Woman in a White Hat" was of a woman posing with a white straw hat on her head. The explanation underneath the photo said the rule of fashion was white hats only appear on Memorial Day and are closeted after Labor Day; two very traditional American holidays. Another photo, taken at a carnival, was of corn dogs, hot dogs and corn on the cob. "Diets aside, it would not have been fashionable to eat otherwise," read the caption.

Fashion fads abound They happen all the time. We shutter when we hear about them, laugh at their newest victims, yet everyone has fallen pray to at least one (although that might not be worth admitting.) I’m talking about fashion fads. A fashion fad is one of those questionably hot styles or accessories that become extremely popular on a whim and disappear without even a whimper.
Today’s trends are more about revisiting trends that once were than creating new ones. Capris pants, once a staple amoung liberated housewives and trendy teenagers of the fifties have become an everyday warm weather apparel mainstay for women of all ages. Charm bracelets are back but with a modern, non-dangling twist, and websites on making friendship bracelets are popping up all over the Internet. Following in the bracelet trend, rubber wristbands are very popular for guys and girls. They can be found on the arms of most teens, brandishing general sayings, support of their favorite sports teams and even in support of chairty relief.
The 70s first brought us crocheted ponchos, trucker hats, bohemian skirts, “dirty” hair, bell bottoms and tube tops, all of which have made it back into contemporary 2005 wardrobes. The 80s, the epitome of fad fashion, is being revisted with the appearance of jelly shoes and bracelets, as well as riped, holey jeans in a variety of washes. Hello Kitty, Strawberry Shortcake, and the Care Bears are gracing women’s t-shirts and teen bookbags. As long as shoulder-pads don’t come back, we’re all okay.
