African Fashions Win World Acclaim
By Muguette Goufrani

Africans are painting the world in a kaleidoscope of bold colors and patterns. Vibrant color combinations, dazzling patterns, rich fabrics, fabulous headgear and elegant gowns we saw in Kenya, Cameroon, Uganda, Benin, Ghana, Tanzania (you name it) at ATA events plus in Conakry and traveling through Guinea, were outstanding. While returning to Paris from Cameroon, we spent some quality time with Seidnaly Alphadi , ( right) whose African- inspired creations are taking Europe by storm. It seemed like half the plane was filled with models from a Fashion Show he had just staged. At a garden party near Mount Cameroon and Limbe Botanical Gardens , our travel agent group was treated to an outstanding fashion show by ' Esterella ' one of Cameroon's top designers.

Part 4 - Fashion Designer Influences
By Pauline Weston Thomas for Fashion-Era.com
Some Designer Influences for 2004
In New York
In the New York fashion shows for spring summer 2004 with few designers shining or showing much creative innovation or inspiration, no new talent emerged,
Fashion designer Donna Karan's DKNY show of her traditional signature jersey mixed with bronzed and coppered leathers was aimed deliberately to satisfy department stores throughout the USA. Her sexy fashion line will appeal to many consumers.
Tommy Hilfiger used bright candy pinks with white and orange to create fresh fashions of bomber jackets and extra wide pants, all highly suited to warm sunny days at the coast.
Ralph Lauren also used strong pastels of the citrus yellow family. The colour combinations with lilac appeared fresh, new and young whilst maintaining the elegance and sophistication of the New England well bred woman.
Marc Jacobs looked to the 1920s and 1970s for inspiration. His designs included fine linen pants, ethereal patterned chiffon tea dresses in pastels or muted tea tones, house on the prairie velvet skirts, cropped panne velvet or satin jackets and petticoats with ruffles. Cocktail dresses stopped well clear of the knee.

Mathematica in High Fashion
When the 2000 Fall and Winter Tokyo Collection was presented in April, the unique Mathematica -inspired designs therein captured the attention of the fashion world. Japanese fashion designer Eri Matsui, who searches for forms of beauty through her work, used Mathematica to create these clothing patterns ranging from the utterly simplistic to the incredibly intricate. The Eri Matsui collection included designs of mathematical forms such as Klein bottles , Escher patterns, and knot theory , the latter of which she says "approaches a single solution in a mathematical sense while creating many variations in a fashion sense." And although computers were used for the creation of the designs, they reminded many viewers of biological things, much like the traditional beauty of the Japanese kimono. This response to her work supports Ms. Matsui's belief in an embracive, not contrasting, relationship between computers and nature, science and art. Her search for universal forms to make women look beautiful initially led Ms. Matsui to explore the Golden Ratio. When she began to think about "What is beauty?" from a mathematical point of view, her interest grew to encompass the entire geometrical science. She first saw examples of

India Profile
Fashion in India
India has a rich and varied textile heritage, where each region of India has its own unique native costume and traditional attire. While traditional clothes are still worn in most of rural India, urban India is changing rapidly, with international fashion trends reflected by the young and glamorous, in the cosmopolitan metros of India. Fashion in India is a vibrant scene, a nascent industry and a colorful and glamorous world where designers and models start new trends every day. While previously a master weaver was recognized for his skill, today a fashion designer is celebrated for his or her creativity. Young urban Indians can choose from the best of East and West as Indian fashion designers are inspired by both Indian and western styles. This fusion of fashion can be seen on the streets and ramps of the fashionable cities of India. Fashion in India is also beginning to make its mark on the international scene as accessories such as bindis (red dots worn on the forehead), mehendi (designs made by applying henna to the palms of the hands and other parts of the body) and bangles, have gained international popularity, after being worn by fashion icons like the pop singers Madonna and Gwen Stephani. Fashion in India has become a growing industry with international events such as the India Fashion Week and annual shows by fashion designers in the major cities of India. The victories of a number of Indian beauty queens in International events such as the Miss World and Miss Universe contests have also made Indian models recognized worldwide. Fashion designers such as Ritu Kumar, Ritu Beri, Rohit Bal, Rina Dhaka, Muzaffar Ali, Satya Paul, Abraham and Thakore, Tarun Tahiliani, JJ Valaya and Manish Malhotra are some of the well known fashion designers in India.
