81. History Of Fashion Designer Martine Sitbon
Biography and career profile offered for the designer.
http://www.designerhistory.com/historyofashion/sitbon.html
MARTINE SITBON
Martine Sitbon was born in Casablanca, Morocco in 1951. Her mother was Italian and her father French. She and her family moved to Paris in 1961, when she was 10 years old. In 1974, after studying at the Studio Bercot in Paris, Sitbon traveled extensively for 7 years, through Hong Kong, Mexico and India, but returned to France. Her early fashion education was gained in the second-hand markets of London and Paris. She set up her own house and showed her first collection in 1985. She paraded bloomers, pastel-coloured cloth coats and monk hoods down the runway. She was encouraged and assisted by her husband Marc Ascoli. He now designs the boutiques and showrooms of many of the leading designers in Paris. Fond of contrasts, Sitbon is a modernist whose clothes nonetheless have a sense of history. Her long jackets and riding coats are rigorously cut, with narrow shoulders and softened waistlines. She also likes to design long skirts and trousers with a controlled flare at the lower leg.
She joined the French house of CHLOE in 1987 and in 1988 she created her first collection for CHLOE. She had continued designing for her own label also. In 1991, she left them. She joined Byblos in 1998 and designed for them for four years, before leaving in June 2002.

Biography offered of the designer and label history up to the present which she still oversees.
    http://www.designerhistory.com/historyofashion/schon.html
    MILA SCHON
Website: www.milaschon.com She was born Maria Carmen Nustrizio Schon, in Dalmatia, Yugoslavia in 1919. Her parents were wealthy Yugoslav aristocrats who settled in Italy when she was a child, to escape the Communists. She was initially a customer of Balenciaga and she gained her love of couture, by wearing his clothes. In 1958, with no previous experience, she set up a dressmaking establishment in Milan, Italy. Her first couture collection presented in 1965, at Florence's Palazzo Pitti. It was well received in Italy and the USA. She received the Fashion Oscar in 1967. A ready-to-wear collection followed in 1971. She also brought out her menswear line that same year. Essentially a classic designer of dresses, suits and eveningwear, Schon, though not as well known as many of her colleagues, is one of the most respected names in Italian fashion and is noted for her sophisticated style and precise tailoring. Schon's favourite fabric was double-faced wool and this white suit represents her design signature. She was a perfectionist who worked within a classical structure, to exacting specifications and she created modernist garments. Mila Schon also designs uniforms for airlines and has made for Alitalia in 1969 and Iran Air in 1972. She made uniforms for the Milan Soccer team and the clothes worn by the Italian national team for the Barcelona Olympics in 1992.

Tara Subkoff (shown on the left) was born in the USA in 1975. She is a film actress who has starred in 7 films since her debut in 1993. In 2000 she and her friend Matt Damhave, set up their garment house and called it "Imitation of Christ". Their first show in January 2001 was a real success and the collection sold out immediately. On the right is a dress from Spring/Summer 2003. Collections are shown during the New York Fashion Week in March and September each year. They also occasionally put on shows in Los Angeles. Imitation clothes always make it on to the "most talked about" list. At their last show, they put the audience on the runway and sent the models around them in the auditorium. There were flamenco-style white silk dresses and open-front coat dresses, as well as elegant chiffon transparent creations covered with black silk flowers. As always each was a one-off customizing vintage pieces in inimitable style. On the left is a dress from the collection for Fall/Winter 2003. Then Damhave left and Danny Seo joined her early 2002, but he also left after 10 months, in February 2003. At the moment Tara is running the concern solo with help from her friends and her younger brother Daniel.

Career profile and biography of designer provided.
    http://www.designerhistory.com/historyofashion/rouff.html
    MAGGY ROUFF
Maggy Rouff was born in Paris in 1896. Her initial ambition was to be a doctor, but her upbringing led her into fashion design. Her parents were the founding directors of the house of DRECOLL and it was there that Maggy began her design career. When Drecoll merged with the house of Beer, Maggy decided to strike out on her own. She was newly married to Pierre Besancon de Wagner and she established her husband as financial director. She opened her own house in 1928 on the Champs Elysees, with immediate success. She loved draped, bowed and puffed clothes.. She was known for her lingerie and daywear. She created wearable fashions in the haute couture tradition, though she achieved considerable success with her ready-to-wear lines. She designed beautiful evening wear but was also known for her sportswear. Jaunty and fresh, her sharply tailored clothing was advertised in the late 20's as a "peep into the future". Many of her day clothes were made of crepe romain or wool crepe, and featured collars made of shawls or scarves. She loved shirring, attached scarves, bias flounces and ruffles. Monograms were often embroidered on her jacket pockets right up until the 50's. In 1937 she set up her salon in London. The gown on the left is from 1939. The horizontal gathering at the bodice is generated by a Grecian style harness made of lame ribbon, gathered like a sash. This photograph by

Cincinnati The best of the United States' young designers competed at the University of Cincinnati Oct. 31 in a run-way competition that is sending a handful of them on to Paris for the world finals of the prestigious International Competition of Young Fashion Designers in December. More than 40 students from 18 of the best fashion programs in the country showed their finest "wears" before a panel comprised of professional designers from New York, Paris and elsewhere. All were competing not only for the chance to move up to the final level of competition against their peers from Europe and Asia on Dec. 17, but also for other premium awards, including a graduate scholarship to Paris' Institut Francais de la Mode (IFM). At the close of the Oct. 31 U.S. finals, 10 garments and five accessory pieces were selected as representing the best of the student designs. The designs and their creators will travel to Paris for the Dec. 17 finals of the International Competition of Young Fashion Designers. Three of the U.S. students received special Awards of Distinction, and one of these three will be offered the IFM scholarship after the Paris competition. They are:

    97. History Of Fashion Designer Nina Ricci
Biography provided in addition to the succession of designers at her house after she relinquished some of the duties in her seventies.
    http://www.designerhistory.com/historyofashion/ricci.html
    NINA RICCI
Website: www.nina-ricci.fr Maria Nielli was born in Turin, Italy, in 1883 and her family moved to Florence when she was five years old. Subsequently, her family moved to France in 1895 when she was 12 years old. At the age of 13, she was apprenticed to a dressmaker and by 18 had become the head of the salon and by 22 it's chief designer. In 1904 she married a jeweler named Luigi Ricci and they had a son named Robert in 1905. In 1908 Nina joined the house of Raffin as a designer and remained there for 20 years. In 1932, at the age of 50, Madame Ricci decided to open her own house, and she and her son set up the House of Ricci. There Madame Ricci created the garments and Robert ran the business. It grew rapidly throughout the 30's till it occupied 11 floors in 3 buildings, all on the same street as their original one-room maison de couture. Working directly with the fabric on a mannequin, Nina Ricci created elegant, sophisticated clothes in classic style. She was noted for her high standard of workmanship and became a popular designer for older society women. She was skilled at making the most of a print, cutting a plaid for an evening dress on the bias, echoing the X-cross in the skirt pattern in the surplice, crossed-over treatment of the bodice. One daring dress in 1937 had a halter neck open between the breasts from neck to waist. Day and evening dresses alike drew attention to the figure, by being fitted to below the waist and featuring much shirring and drapery.

    99. History Of Fashion Designer Lars Nilsson
Career profile offered for the current creative director at Nina Ricci.
    http://www.designerhistory.com/historyofashion/nilsson.html
    Lars Nilsson
Lars Nilsson was born in 1967 in Sweden. He spent two years studying at Virginska Skolan, a fashion school in Stockholm. He then went to Paris and spent one year at the Chambre Syndicale fashion college for Haute Couture. His first internship was at Chanel where he worked under Monsieur Paquito. From Chanel, he moved to Christian Lacroix, where he remained for 9 years. In 1996, he worked for a few months at Pierre Balmain, before working for John Galliano at Dior. In 1999 Nilsson moved to New York and joined Ralph Lauren, but he much preferred the type of clothes made by Bill Blass whom he joined in 2000. When Bill Blass retired the same year, Lars Nilsson became the house designer. He also brought with him his good friend right from college days, Herve Pierre. Lars had only 21 days to prepare his first Bill Blass collection, but pulled together a solid blockbuster 27 pieces, which were greeted with applause and relief by the ladies who have always supported the house. The venue was intimate, the Blass showroom, instead of the Bryant Park tents where New York collections are usually shown. The lilac, double-faced silk-satin trench worn over paprika silk-velvet pants, shown in the picture here, was one of Nilsson's favourites. There was a great shock in store, 24 hours after he had successfully presented his Bill Blass Fall 2003 collection in New York, he was fired by the Blass CEO along with his team of 6. His collection had been based on New York architecture, and had been acclaimed. It is not known why the house of Blass fired him and he was very shocked. Click on
