Born Ralph Lifshitz on October 14, 1939, in the Bronx, New York, Ralph Lauren has come a long way from his days of sharing a bedroom with two of his brothers. Growing up in a middle-class Jewish family, Ralph and his three older brothers were raised by his mother, while his artist father painted houses. Lauren's fashion sense was apparent at an early age when he would purchase expensive suits with the money he earned working at his after-school job. Although he knew he could find his clothes at a less expensive price, he made it a point to look stylish in his expensive threads and he has succeeded at looking cool in his attire since the age of 12. One would think that Lauren attended fashion design school, but he actually studied business at City College in Manhattan, and dropped out short of receiving his business degree.

Gilles Rosier Gilles Rosier was born in Paris, France, in 1961. He studied at the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture in Paris. After graduation, he worked at Pierre Balmain, Christian Dior and as Assistant to Jean-Paul Gaultier, in the 1980's. For some time he was also Artistic Director of the French house Leonard. He then started his own lines GR 816 and Gilles Rosier in 1992. He also designed for the house of Lacoste for several years, leaving in 1999. In October 1999, Gilles Rosier took over as head designer for the house of Kenzo, when Kenzo Takada himself retired. He had spent several seasons training under Kenzo before taking over. Having lived in Algeria, Zaire, Gabon, Germany and France, Rosier feels that he is in an ideal position to reinterpret Kenzo's vision of global unity. One of his recent collections for Kenzo featured classical Japanese details and techniques that evoked an historical mood but looked thoroughly modern. For Spring/Summer 2002, Rosier sent out a thoroughly modern collection full of relaxed, stylish pieces. He said "I wanted the clothes to be like white paper, being free and discreet at the same time." He cleverly used accessories and fastenings to transform what could have been a straightforward dull collection into a study in deconstruction. One focal point of the collection was a canvas army belt which Rosier used to pleat skirts, hold a jacket in place, or hold a scarf on a scantily dressed model. Whether weaving in and out of soft-shouldered dresses, or around the waist, this belt gave the loose clothing a hard center.

Well, complacency for starters. This is a fashion label you should never turn your back on. If you think you know NOM*D by now, it pays to remember that Margi Robertson’s Dunedin label continues to defy all expectations. So, after last winter’s experimentations with grunge tartan and smurf-coloured knitwear, this summer finds NOM*D in an urban, sophisticated mode. Sleeveless, lopsided tuxedo jackets made from lightweight silks, ephemeral silk dresses in rich desert taupes, and fine vintage-inspired knits with a metallic sheen all cast a shadow of maturity over this collection. As always too, there are the classic NOM*D touches. Sportswear influences show through with white marle and deep purple t-shirting used for everything from clever double-strung singlets to military-inspired jackets. Masculine and feminine elements duke it out in their usual fraught juxtaposition. Blouses that sport just one frilly sleeve as a concession to girlish charm while shirts that ruffle down one side only are sewn directly onto t-shirting to create a two-in-one garment.

When he was a child, they moved to France. He was a weak, spindly boy and suffered at the hands of his schoolmates, so he found solace at home becoming absorbed in drawing and painting. He designed dresses for his mother and two sisters, while still a teenager. In 1953, when he was 17, Yves arrived in Paris, and entered the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture School. He entered a competition organised by the International Wool Secretariat, and won first prize with an asymmetrically draped, one-sleeved cocktail dress. A picture of his design is shown on the right. Coincidentally, another prize winner in this same competition was Karl Lagerfeld in the coat category. The chief judge of this competition was Michel de Brunhoff, director of VOGUE. When he saw Yves St. Laurent's portfolio, he was surprised to see that this unknown young man was thinking along the same lines as the new A-line collection about to be presented by his friend Christian Dior. Brunhoff spoke to Dior and said "you must take him on". Dior found him so gifted that he took him on as his assistant. It was the first time that Christian Dior had anyone assisting him in the initial design stage.

She worked in the Printemps departmental store and then for the Mafia Design Studio. Junko also worked as Chief Designer of Childrenswear for the French house of Cacharel. She started her own label in 1984, on the rue Etienne Marcel in Paris. The Japanese woman has a wide variety of designers to choose from, all making exquisite garments. One of these is Junko Shimada. Shimada often sculptures the female form with concentric circles in stretch jersey, artistically defined by wired organza. She also makes minimalistic skirts and jackets, such as this cream and grey combination outfit. This is ideal for the working woman. Autumn/Winter 2003 Here on the right is an outfit from Junko Shimada's Autumn/Winter 2003 collection, shown during Paris Fashion Week in March 2003. Haute Couture In May 2003, the Federation Francaise de la Couture, the Haute Couture governing body in Paris, announced Junko Shimada had been included in their membership. Spring/Summer 2004 During Paris Fashion Week in October 2003, Junko Shimada showed her own collection for next Spring. An outfit from this collection is shown on the left.
