Textiles
The different types of textiles:

  • A textile is a cloth, which is either woven by hand or machine. "Textile" has traditionally meant, "a woven fabric". The term comes from the Latin word texere , meaning to weave Fibers are the raw materials for all fabrics. Some fibers occur in nature as fine strands that can be twisted into yarns. These natural fibers come from plants, animals, and minerals. For most of history, people had only natural fibers to use in making cloth. But modern science has learned how to produce fibers by chemical and technical means. Today, these manufactured fibers account for more than two-thirds of the fibers processed by U.S. textile mills. Plants provide more textile fibers than do animals or minerals. Cotton fibers produce soft, absorbent fabrics that are widely used for clothing, sheets, and towels. Fibers of the flax plant are made into linen. The strength and beauty of linen have made it a popular fabric for fine tablecloths, napkins, and handkerchiefs.
    The main animal fiber used for textiles is wool. Another animal fiber, silk, produces one of the most luxurious fabrics. Sheep supply most of the wool, but members of

    The Fashion Program prepares the student for entry-level design, product development, and merchandising positions at both manufacturing and retail levels.
    The full two-year curriculum may be completed in both day and evening courses. Specific coursework for the design certificate covers apparel construction, pattern making, illustration, production, computer-generated design, textiles, industrial equipment, and the study of historic costume. The fashion merchandising major is an interdisciplinary one shared with the business department and prepares the student for employment in buying, visual merchandising, product development, e-commerce, and retail management.
    Career Opportunities Being a Southern California college offers our students many opportunities in the fields of fashion design and merchandising. The largest manufacturers of sportswear and active board wear are located in LA, and job opportunities are announced weekly, posted in-class and on-line. Prudential Projects Fashion Designers of the Future Fashion Students Display Great Design Talent Thirteen talented fashion students from colleges and universities across the South West and South Wales have been chosen as finalists in The Mall's Student Fashion Design Competition in association with Sebastian Professional. The students now have five months to transform their designs into finished outfits, ready for the final round of judging during The Mall's Fashion Week in October. The short-listed designs were all based on the competition theme The Four Seasons. The judging panel was led by Antonia Schofield, a designer at John Lewis, who reviewed all the entries with a professional designer's eye. She was joined by The Mall's marketing manager Sue Boor and account director Maria Crayton, together with Susie Weldon, women's editor of the Western Daily Press.
