CAREER POTENTIAL
Fashion designers work for apparel manufacturers, designing clothing for men, women and children. Some designers cater to specialty stores or to large department stores, which may sell a fashion line under a person's name or a company label. Other designers specialize in one aspect of apparel, such as evening gowns or sportswear. A few fashion designers create exclusive, trend-setting fashions that appear on New York and Paris runways, but these designers are the exception rather than the rule. A major in fashion design prepares you for a career as a fashion designer or illustrator, or for design and production positions in the fashion industry. A bachelor's degree qualifies you for most jobs in the industry, but teaching fashion design at the college level requires a master of fine arts degree.

The degree programme is organised over three academic years of study and includes theory-based courses as well as experimental workshops dedicated to design-research. The workshops give students the opportunity to learn and experiment with different design techniques and help them to further their knowledge and skills in designing an entire collection - from researching materials to the finishing touches of each individual garment. There are also specialized workshops dedicated to shoe and accessory design. The theory-based courses aim to stimulate thought and reflection in students and introduce them to the comparative studies of different design practices.

Graduate Fashion Week Success for Ravensbourne College
A jubilant Sally Shaw, final year BA (Hons) Fashion With Textiles Student at Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication, was amongst the top prize winners at Graduate Fashion Week, sponsored for the second year running by Topshop and the Prince's Trust, last night. Currently weighing up her options Sally says, "I love what I do and I'm very passionate about it. I would eventually love my own label." Julie Stokes, 22, was also highly commended for the category of The Portfolio Award. The award, judged by the illustrators Richard Gray and Julie Verhoven, was a great confidence boost to the student as she is thinking about a future career in freelance illustration. This is something which Julie, who originally hails from Middlesborough, hopes to build upon when she commences her MA at Central St. Martins later in the year.
