"Sew" Much to Choose From: Fashion Career Options
The fashion world is made up of hundreds of different jobs including designers, buyers, illustrators, pattern makers, models, seamstresses, consultants, journalists, and many more. Featured School
American InterContinental University - Los Angeles
American InterContinental University at Los Angeles prepares you with the knowledge, skills and practical work experience you need to succeed in today's competitive workplace.

In a nutshell, fashion designers create clothing and accessory designs, but their jobs are far more involved than merely sketching some new clothes. Among other tasks, designers draw and cut patterns to make sample garments, select fabric and trimmings, fit and modify the finished garment and, of course, keep up-to-date with the latest fashion trends (especially those of competitors!). Many designers specialize in a particular type of clothing or accessory, such as men's or women's clothing, children's clothing, lingerie, shoes, etc. Most design teams consist of a head designer and several assistants, whose jobs are to make first patterns and samples and assist the designer in his/her various tasks. Fashion designers, to their job properly, really need a firm background in both the creative and business sides of the fashion industry. They need to know the design techniques, principles, tools and instruments involved in the production and use of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models. But they also need to analyze needs and product requirements, visit textile manufacturers to evaluate fabrics, and handle the arrangements for showings for buyers and the press.

Water lily laces designed by Lenore Dembski, fabric by Leonie Gardner Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander designers are today expressing their cultures in graphic design, jewellery, textiles and fashion. Their work sheds new light on traditional themes and motifs, revealing contrasts between the different regions of Australia. The energy and imagination of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander design reveals a culture with a continuity that remains through the fickle changes of fashion. Textile design techniques range from traditional fibre crafts to screen-printing, batik and hand-painting. The techniques reflect external influences such as training opportunities, travel and market forces. Clothing is perhaps one of the most immediate ways that a person can express how they feel about themselves and their culture, their political views and aspirations. Community-based enterprises have provided a network for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander designers whereby they can sell their designs and work together to solve production and distribution problems. Young workers can be employed in work schemes and many communities find this has far-reaching effects upon their self-image and financial status.

The fashion management program at the University of the Incarnate Word is a unique blend of two disciplines, fashion design and fashion merchandising. Both disciplines include intensive textile and costume history courses and branch out from there. The fashion design program consists of a collection of courses aimed specifically at apparel design and construction. Throughout the degree, students learn the basics of sewing and then continue to build a repertoire of advanced sewing skills. Couture sewing techniques are taught with the expectation that students can easily adapt to mass production methods once they have learned the intricate and advanced skills associated with haute couture. As they progress in their sewing skills, students are then exposed to pattern engineering. Through the pattern engineering classes and CAD for Fashion Design (using the prestigious pattern making and marking making software system from Gerber Garment Technology) students learn the concepts of engineering a two dimensional fabric in order to fit a three dimensional form. Although the enrollment has increased, we are able to offer clothing construction classes with a student/teacher ratio of 14 to 1. Fashion design students also learn the elements and principles of design and fashion illustration or figure drawing. The fashion merchandising program begins with teaching the students basic sewing techniques so they can understand how garments are put together, recognize good quality garments and understand fit, concepts which will be vital as they embark upon careers in fashion retail and wholesale. After basic sewing classes, the fashion merchandising
