Science from the Field Ocean History Whaleship Essex ... Teacher Resources The Faroe Islands are situated in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean, roughly half way between Scotland and Iceland. In these islands, there is a traditional drive hunt for pilot whales called grinds . It can take place at any time of the year, whenever a pod is sighted. The whales are driven into a shallow bay with motor boats. The aim is to beach them so that they can be easily slaughtered. In 1992, 1572 pilot whales were killed in 14 separate drives *.

It also removes the uncertainty surrounding the future of the CANTAT-3 cable, due to its older technology and the financial difficulties facing Teleglobe, which supervises the cable’s operation. Iceland’s international telecommunications traffic, especially data transmission, has doubled each year in recent years. Without this new addition, Iceland’s transmission capacity via CANTAT-3 would have been fully utilised within 3-5 years. The maximum transmission capacity of FARICE is 720 Gb/s. To begin with, however, only part of this capacity, 10 Gb/s, will be utilised between Iceland and Scotland and a similar amount between Scotland and the Faroes. The total transmission capacity of CANTAT-3 between Europe and Iceland is 2.5 Gb/s, but only part of this is at Iceland’s disposal. Iceland’s data transmission capacity will increase by almost a thousandfold when FARICE has been expanded to full capacity.

    GREENLAND AND THE FAROE ISLANDS
The Faroe Islands and Greenland are part of the Kingdom of Denmark. As a main principle, the Danish Constitution stipulates that the foreign and security interests for all parts of the Kingdom of Denmark are the responsibility of the Danish government.
On issues such as security policy, European questions or the UN, there may, however, exist a strong interest among the Faroese and Greenlandic people regarding aspects of these policies. To safeguard the foreign policy interests of all parts of the Kingdom, a close and continuous co-operation exist between the Danish government and Faroese and Greenlandic home rule governments. Practice in recent years has shown a clear development in the direction of decisive Faroese and Greenlandic influence on matters of specific importance to the external relations of the Faroe Islands and Greenland.

Money or Independence - for The Faroe Islands
Denmark will stop its annual grants to the Faroe Islands within four years, if the small province in the Atlantic will vote for independence, when it has a referendum on the 26 of May.
"The Danish government will take a yes in the vote as an expression of a desire on the part of the Faroese to become independent from Denmark, and we will phase out our grants to the islands over a four-year period, starting this year," Danish Prime Minister Poul Nyrup Rasmussen said Tuesday after a parliamentary committee meeting. At the meeting Poul Nyrup Rasmussen gained broad croos-party support for his statements. The Faroe Islands receive 950 million crown every year from Denmark, and that amount covers one-third of the Faroese public spendings. The plan of the Faroese government was to fade out the grants from Denmark over a period of fifteen years. The leader of the Faroese home rule Anfinn Kallsberg was chocked when he heard the Danish decision. "The Prime Minister's statements has only one purpose; to get the Faroese to vote no to independence," he said. Last update: Wednesday, February 7, 2001 at 2:45:54 PM
