The Faroese History The first inhabitants of the Faroe Islands were Irish monks, who c.650 AD arrived at the islands. Not until about 200 years later did the first Norsemen arrive. They came both from Norway and from the British Isles. They were mostly farmers looking for new land where they could make a living. The Middle Ages . The Faroe Islands shared the general economic prosperity which the Nordic countries experienced during the viking age and up to the 13th century. The population growth led to a division of land into smaller plots. This division of farm land, however, was later stopped. From the mid-13th century, the navigation to and from the Faroe Islands was conducted by the Norwegian Crown, under which the Faroe Islands belonged - later on the navigation was taken over by the Hanseatics. The Period from 1500 to c.1800 . By the Union of Kalmar, Denmark and Norway had been united into one Kingdom, and at the Reformation, the Danish-Norwegian Crown took over the landed property of the church, whereby the Crown, together with earlier acquisitions, came into possession of more than half of all the land on the Faroe Islands. The trade with the Faroe Islands was handled by changing merchants, who went for an easy profit. A great threat to the Faroese community in the 16th and 17th centuries were the pirates, but the naval hero Magnus Heinason in his time was able to some extent to keep the unwelcome visitors, from countries such as Ireland France, Algeria and Turkey, out of Faroese waters.

Nomadic hunters followed the lichen and moss-eating reindeer into post-glacial Denmark. The reindeer heard 'go north' voices, but the Stone Age hunters stayed put, sowing seeds in the ash of slash-and-burn fields, fencing in stock animals and burying their dead vertically. Skill and artistry flowered in the Bronze Age from 1800 BC, trade routes paddled all the way south and the most beautiful and valuable objects were buried in bogs as sacrificial offerings. Iron clanged in from 500 BC and was domestically available, leading to the development of large agricultural communities. Present-day Denmark can trace its linguistic and cultural roots back to when the region was settled by the Danes, a tribe that is thought to have migrated south from Sweden around 500 AD. In the late 9th century, warriors led by the Norwegian Viking chieftain Hardegon conquered the Jutland peninsula. The Danish monarchy, which claims to be the world's oldest, dates back to Hardegon's son, Gorm the Old, who established his reign early in the 10th century. Gorm's son, Harald Bluetooth, completed the conquest of the Danes, speeding their conversion to Christianity. Bluetooth's gob-stopping successors, Forkbeard and sons, got the wood on England, setting up shop and throne and living the sweet life of Anglo-Dane monarchs. They kept it together for half a century or so, but as Viking power waned, the borders of the Danish kingdom shrank back to Denmark.

Common breeding seabirds include Puffin, Razorbill, Guillemot, Fulmar, Great Skua, Gannets, Cormorants and Kittiwake. (Nielsen, 1986; Lost og fast af Faeroernes posthistorie; plus separate English translation volume by Amedro, 1996) This gem has been largely inaccessible to collectors of Faroe until Amedro's little-known ENGLISH translation was published. Two volume set; the original with Faroe text and illustrations and then the translation. A very interesting background of the development of Faroe postal history and the post. Will be of great interest to any collector of Faroe covers.

Hundreds of illustrations, many in color, including all the stamps. Though entirely in Faroese, the illustrations will be of great interest to serious collectors of Faroe. The Faroese Educational System The Faroese educational system is a modern one, and in the early nineties was subjected to several changes. Educational institutions are up to date concerning both curriculums at different levels in the educational system and institutions' ability/capability to cooperate with institutions outside the Faroe Islands.
Below is a brief description of the Faroese educational system intended to provide you with an overview over what kind/type of educations and educational institutions we have.
The administration of all schools and educational institutions in the Faroe Islands is carried out by the Faroese Ministry of Education and Culture (Mentamálaráðið). The majority of the education available corresponds to the Danish educational system.
Basic education
A basic provision contained in the Faroese education policy is to ensure that every child shall be able to attend a primary school in his/her own village. Faroese is the official school language. Pupils from different villages are from 8th grade brought together to attend district schools.
Primary school Fólkaskulin ). Children start school when they are 7 years old and there has been a 9 years compulsory schooling since 1998. Children begin to learn Danish in 3rd grade and English in the 5th grade. From 8th grade, the school curriculum consists of a basic number of compulsory subjects, supplemented by a range of subjects from which the pupils can select their preferred subjects. German is taught from 8th grade but is not compulsory. At the termination of 9th grade, pupils pass an exam permitting entrance to upper secondary education, but they may however stay at primary school for a further year. This year ends with an exam. Many pupils prefer to take this 10th grade.

In this respect, the Faroe Islands has a unique position in the midst of the North Atlantic Current, which is responsible for the present mild climate in both W Europe and on the Faroe Islands. The warm water is cooled during winter times in the Norwegian-Greenland Sea and convected to deep water. This flows southward over the Greenland-Scotland Ridges and contributes to North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW), which is considered of global climatic importance. The Faroe Islands thus lies in a perfect position to undertake a project on Late Quaternary climatic change, because any change in circulation of North Atlantic surface water or in generation of deep water is apt to have significant and immediate impact on the local Faroese climate.

The flag of the Faroe Islands is a red Scandinavian cross, fimbriated blue.
Mark Sensen , 27 November 1995 The horizontal dimensions of the flag are 6:1:2:1:12, the vertical ones 6:1:2:1:6.
Mark Sensen, 26 September 1995 The construction sheet is equal to that of the Norwegian flag (6+1+2+1+6):(6+1+2+1+12). A note in Album des Pavillons (2000) explains that the Danish national flag may also be flown. I am not sure what that means - it may be that it is flown instead of the civil ensign by vessels registered in Faroes, or it is appropriate to use the Dannebrog as a courtesy flag, or it is appropriate for state offices to use Dannebrog instead and so on?

History St Brendan and his monks sailed past a couple of islands in the 6th century that they named the Island of Sheep and the Paradise of Birds, and modern day historians have speculated that both islands were in the Faroes. The Paradise of Birds may well have been Mykines, the Faroes' westernmost island, which has an unusually dense bird population. The first human settlers were Irish monks, who did not arrive till late in the 6th century. They were no doubt seeking pagans whose souls they could save, or places where they could live in peaceful devotion. Little information remains about their stay, but it's likely that the herds of sheep that the Norse found there in the 9th century originated from hardy stock the Irish brought with them. Like those who settled Iceland, the first Norse to arrive in the Faroes were simple farmers and pastoralists looking for a peaceful place free of the ravages of pirates and tyrants on the mainland. According to the F¦ringa Saga , written in Iceland during the 13th century, the Faroes converted to Christianity around 1000 and became a constitutional part of the Kingdom of Norway in 1035. Norway was formally joined to the Kingdom of Denmark in 1380, and the Faroes adopted a Danish system of law and justice. From very early on, the government of the Faroes lay in the
