Faroe Islands are known for their rich and old culture, for instance the folk dance. There is no instrumental accompaniment to the dance; only the voices and the feet are heard. While a single or a very few singers lead the song, the others take part in the story with their dance steps and by singing the refrain after each verse.

    Danish culture and language
Denmark was settled already 10,000 years ago, when the ice retreated from Scandinavia. Danes descend from various Germanic tribes, including the Jutes and Angles who settled England in the 5th century. There is a small German minority living in southern Jutland and a Danish minority living in North Germany. Danish is a Germanic language of the Nordic branch, mutually intelligible (with some practice) with Norwegian and Swedish. The kingdom of Denmark includes also the autonomous areas of Greenland (area: 2.2 mill. km², pop. 53,000) and Faroe Islands (area: 1,400 km², pop. 48,000). The inhabitants speak a language (Faroese) resembling Icelandic and some Western Norwegian dialects. Eskimos speaking Greenlandic (a language based on a mid-19th century creation of a single literary language out of many Inuit dialects) form the largest group of Greenlanders; the inhabitants of Faroe Islands descend from the Viking settlers who arrived in the 9th century and the Irish monks and slaves who also made it to the Island. As can be expected Danish culture could be called more Central European in character than that of other Nordic countries. Particularly it could be noted that mentality and

Tutl: The Faroese Musicians' Record Company Tutl
is a Faroese record company collectively owned by musicians and composers. A wide range of musical genres - ethnic, folk, jazz, pop, rock, classical, choral, children's music, country and gospel - have been released on the Tutl label, original compositions comprising the greater part of the production. Tutl emerged in 1977 from recordings made by the Faroese folk group Spælimenninir and by musicians appearing regularly in the Tórshavn Jazz Club, Havnar Jazzfelag.
A creative force within Faroese music, Tutl has since its inception been an important catalyst for international collaboration involving musicians, composers and producers. Musicians and composers from abroad have come to the Faroes and worked with Faroese artists, providing creative inspiration and growth for all involved. Many of these collaborations have lasted for years, Faroese ensembles continuing to perform and record with the same international artists. These musical encounters develop windows onto the Faroe Islands, allowing the outside world to learn about many facets of Faroese culture and at the same time bringing new impulses into the Faroese musical arena.

Since finding someone from the islands to talk about these Norwegian emmigrants, I am going to put up the history of the people of the Faroe Islands.
If you are finding difficulty finding learning materials and resources for the language, let me point out that Faroese, along with Norwegian, and Icelandic live under the Germanic -> North Germanic -> Old Norse language group. You may find more material to learn Icelandic. Or, as with my case, the Norwegian language had more material available for native English speakers. Consider the possibility of having to learn another Old Norse based language in order to help you learn Faroese. Nordic languages are readily understood by most Faroese, and English is also widely spoken, especially among the younger people.
It is a very disputed question who the people were that first settled the Faroe Islands and when they did so. Studies made by natural scientists and tales of travels by seafaring Irish friars have led scholars to believe that the Faroe Islands were populated by middle of the 7th century AD. There is no agreement on this matter, however, and the belief is not supported by archaeological findings.
On the other hand, the Norwegian colonization during the Viking Age is well documented. Throughout the Viking Age (approx. 800-1050 AD), large-scale emigration from Norway led to the establishment of Norse agricultural societies, partly in areas populated by Celtic peoples bordering the Irish Sea and on the islands off Scotland's western and northern coasts, and partly in uninhabited areas in the North Atlantic. Contact between the areas of Norse settlement was strong and one of its results was to introduce a number of Celtic cultural elements into the otherwise purely Norse Faroese culture.

    The Faroe Islands
The Faroe Islands are situated in the North Atlantic 430 km south-east of Iceland, 600 km west of Norway and a good 300 km north of Scotland. The Faroes consist of 18 islands, of which 17 are inhabited. The geography and topography of the islands make transport and communication difficult. All Faroese towns and villages have electricity, of which two-thirds is produced in thermal plants (oil) and one-third in hydroelectric plants. The Faroes experienced a massive emigration in 1994 corresponding to 4.4% of the population, resulting in a population decline of 3.7%. The Faroese descend from Norwegian settlers who (circa 800) replaced an Irish settlement. After the introduction of absolute monarchy in Denmark in 1660 the Faroe Islands became more and more governed from Copenhagen. The end of the 19th century saw the emergence of a Faroese national movement that sought to protect Faroese language and culture against a growing Danish influence. The economy of the Faroe Islands is overwhelmingly dependent upon fisheries. Fishing, fish farming and fish processing account for a quarter of the gross factor income and almost 100% of exports. The Faroese language is a Nordic language closely related to Icelandic and to the dialects of Western Norway. Faroese is recognised as the official language, but Danish may also be used in all official connections and is taught in schools.

I spent 1 year with a family there about 1958. I cannot remember their names or the small town I was in. I was a blond little girl with pig tails, and we lived on one of the islands outside the capital and could get there only by boat. There were 2 brothers and 1 sister, one of the brothers came to Iceland to work. I went to school in a 1 room school house. The house I lived in had 3 floors and the bottom floor had the cows. If anyone has any information, please email me - I'm interested in visiting the country again. I have VERY fond memories there. Elisabet (Bessy) (Iceland, (now USA))

It is almost mutually intelligible with other North Germanic languages - at least in its written form. The written form of Faroese was established in the 19th century by Venzel Hammershaimb and modeled after Icelandic with almost the same alphabet. Written Faroese apperared rather late and at a time when the language was under strong pressure from Danish, which had become the established language for the church and civil servants of the Faroes. But when written Faroese was established, it meant a great boost for Faroese culture and language. Today the Faroes have one of the highest number of books published per capita. The best known authors are William Heinesen (1900-1991) and Heðin Brú (alias Hans Jacob Jacobsen, 1901-1987).
