The Faroe Islands are situated in the North Atlantic 430 km south-east of Iceland, 600 km west of Norway and a good 300 km north of Scotland. The Faroe Islands are in the same time zone as Britain. The distance to Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, with which the Faroe Islands have constitutional links, is about 1,300 km. The islands are of volcanic origin and part of the North Atlantic basalt region stretching from Ireland to Greenland. The Ice Age glaciers formed an archipelago of mountains, deep valleys, narrow fords and straits. The basalt covers older geological strata which may contain oil and gas. The climate is typical oceanic: humid, changeable and windy. In Tórshavn the temperature in the coldest month averages 3°C and in the warmest 11°C. The shortest day is 5 hours and the longest 19’/2 hours. There are no woods, but plenty of grass. A mere 6% of the land is under cultivation while the rest is reserved for the grazing of 70,000 sheep and some cattle and horses. Birds are plentiful, especially sea-birds, but other animal life is sparse. The sea around the Faroe Islands is influenced by the meeting of the warm Gulf Stream and cold northern currents, rich in nutritional matter. This guarantees rather stable ocean temperatures, between 5° and 10°C, favouring fish and animal life.

A rich culture
Museums, galleries, historical buildings and many beautiful churches can be visited as you explore the islands but most come here for the unspoilt scenery. Plenty to see and do The capital, Torshavn, is a surprisingly busy town, with a pleasing mix of old and new and a choice of accommodation for visitors, ranging from small guesthouses to hotels with a range of facilities. Many visitors choose Torshavn as the base for their holiday and a developed network of roads, bridges, tunnels and ferries makes access to the other islands easy, travelling by bus or hire car.
There are plenty of interesting guided excursions to choose from, including sightseeing by coach, walking and horse riding, while at sea you can enjoy boat trips, fishing and even scuba-diving. With hotels and guesthouses in the smaller towns and villages, a two or three-centre holiday is also an option.

Is the North Atlantic culture a square or a circle?
For a thousand years three nations have co-existed in the North Atlantic, but not until the entrance into a new millennium we start asking ourselves whether we have something in common and whether we can learn something from each other. For centuries our contact to the outside world went through three separate routes to Copenhagen, which still must be considered to be the fourth corner of the North Atlantic universe. The fact that a large part of the cultural heritage has been repressed might also be considered an advantage. When the first Icelandic painters, sculptors, composers etc. fought to make a name for themselves, they were not burdened by a heritage. The world were at their feet, and they went on Grand Tours to the metropolis, absorbed the latest in international art, copied it and began slowly to find their own personal expressions, often inspired by the scenery, light, natural sounds and human activity that surrounded them in Iceland. The recognition, which these pioneers have obtained both in Iceland and abroad, seems to show that the lack of heritage can also be used as an advantage. Greenland and the Faroe Islands have been part of a Danish state that has been organised from the centre, and the contact between the North Atlantic neighbours has until recently been so slight that they might as well be positioned in three different corners of a four-cornered North Atlantic universe. The development of national independence has made the three nations inclined to seek inspiration from and compare themselves with greater cultural units than their closest neighbours. My expertise is the Icelandic and not the Greenlandic and Faroese cultural development, but I am fairly sure that the Faroese and Greenlandic national identities are much closer connected to a visual, physical and musical culture than the Icelandic identity is, while the two countries only recently have developed a written language and literature based on oral traditions and bible translations.

History
For millions of years, the Faroe Islands stood alone in the heart of the North Atlantic. The first settlers may have been Irish monks, probably in the middle of the 7th century, seeking a tranquil refuge in these remote islands.
What is better known and well documented is the Norwegian colonisation, which took place during the 9th century and developed throughout the Viking Age, making the Faroe Islands a central part of the Viking settlements along the coasts of the North Atlantic and the Irish Sea.
The Viking settlers established their own parliament with local "tings" in different parts of the islands and the main ting on Tinganes in Tórshavn. Christianity was proclaimed here around the turn of the last millennium. Shortly thereafter, the islands came under the control of the Norwegian kings, one of whom was the famous King Sverre, who was brought up at the Faroese bishop’s seat at Kirkjubøur.

The Faroese Educational System The Faroese educational system is a modern one, and in the early nineties was subjected to several changes. Educational institutions are up to date concerning both curriculums at different levels in the educational system and institutions' ability/capability to cooperate with institutions outside the Faroe Islands.
Below is a brief description of the Faroese educational system intended to provide you with an overview over what kind/type of educations and educational institutions we have.
The administration of all schools and educational institutions in the Faroe Islands is carried out by the Faroese Ministry of Education and Culture (Mentamálaráðið). The majority of the education available corresponds to the Danish educational system.
Basic education
A basic provision contained in the Faroese education policy is to ensure that every child shall be able to attend a primary school in his/her own village. Faroese is the official school language. Pupils from different villages are from 8th grade brought together to attend district schools.
Primary school Fólkaskulin ). Children start school when they are 7 years old and there has been a 9 years compulsory schooling since 1998. Children begin to learn Danish in 3rd grade and English in the 5th grade. From 8th grade, the school curriculum consists of a basic number of compulsory subjects, supplemented by a range of subjects from which the pupils can select their preferred subjects. German is taught from 8th grade but is not compulsory. At the termination of 9th grade, pupils pass an exam permitting entrance to upper secondary education, but they may however stay at primary school for a further year. This year ends with an exam. Many pupils prefer to take this 10th grade.

Before World War two my father visitied the Faroe Islands. He was in the British Merchant Navy. He also visited it during world War Two when he was in the Royal Navy. During that time he befriended a woman in the Faroe Islands and had a child to her. His naval duties took him away from the Faroes. He later settled in New Zealand where he had a family. I am seeking contact with the son he had to that woman as I understand he is my half-brother. A distant memory tells me his first name was Peter. I do hope by some means we can make contact.

She and six fellow FMMs work in a parish of 120 parishioners of 23 nationalities. Here she discusses the controversial traditional whale drive. By Maria Forrestal FMM The Faroe Islands are not well known to many people, except perhaps those interested in fishing or whaling. The latter has certainly been a source of controversy. At the end of September, Dimmalætting , one of the national newspapers on the Faroes, featured several articles drawing attention to recent coverage of whaling in an English newspaper. The article, ‘When the Sea Foamed Red’ was written by a journalist from the Daily Mail who visited the Faroe Islands during a whale drive in Tórshavn in September, 2003. The article depicted the Faroese people as barbarians who kill whale simply for the pleasure of killing.

In summer with its endless daylight, darkness is but at fleeting matter. The ever-changing light arouses the desire to stay awake, contemplate life and listen to nature's efforts to go to sleep. The Faroe Islands are one of the last places in Europe where everyday life brings what people elsewhere look for: closeness, nature and peace. The geographical location and size of our islands have contributed to the preservation of our own culture and language. Today we consider our modest size a benefit in as much as we have a choice how close we want to be to the outside world and vice versa. God is the sound director The musicians are getting ready inside the grotto, and this time the clarinettist is elevating the moment. The music and whispering of the sea enhance the feeling of something greater than Man.
