Employment The Heritage Farmstead Museum 's History Built in 1891 in a region of rich blackland soil by Hunter Farrell for his wife Mary Alice and daughter Ammie, what is now known as the Heritage Farmstead was a pretentious, yet practical, farmhouse. Its elaborate jigsaw trim was characteristic of the time; wrap-around porches and north-south orientation with opposing doorways satisfied the need for shade and cross-ventilation in a period before air conditioning. Together with three barns and several outbuildings on a 365 acre spread, this homestead was definitely a showplace. Hunter Farrell was a successful businessman in Collin County whose expanding business often took him away from home. Over time, Mary Alice Farrell took on full management of the sizable wheat farm operation. After the Farrell’s' divorce in 1928, Mary Alice and daughter Ammie retained ownership of the homeplace, which one or both of them ran as a farm until 1972. At age twenty, "Miss Ammie" married Dr. Woods Lynch and had a son George, her only child, before divorcing a few years later. Her subsequent marriage to Dudley Wilson lasted 53 years. Miss Ammie is best known as a champion sheep breeder. Up until her death in 1972, she consistently won prizes for her animals at major stock shows. Ammie Wilson was a successful woman in a male-dominated business - a true pioneer.

Saved from the Wrecking Ball Land-strapped New York City plays a proactive
role in preserving its heritage. By Barbara Milo Ohrbach
    Photos: Madeleine Isom
I The stately Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum, located in New York City's Pelham Bay Park, has been operated by the International Garden Club since 1914 The organization also has become a safe haven for other threatened historic sites in the city, like the elegant Merchant's House, which was acquired in 1998, and the Little Red Lighthouse, the subject of a beloved 1942 children's story of the same name by Hildegaard H. Swift. The only lighthouse on the island of Manhattan, it was moved to its present location under the George Washington Bridge in 1921, decommissioned in 1951 and then saved from destruction.
Each of the properties is unique. Examples include the humble green-and-white clapboard cottage in the Bronx where Edgar Allen Poe spent some of his last days; the grand Federalstyle Gracie Mansion, home of the mayor of New York City; and a remarkable historic village like Richmondtown Restoration with 28 centuries-old buildings in Staten Island. Following is a selection of the distinctive buildings now under the care of the Historic House Trust.

The South Shore has a plethora of museums, the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic in Lunenburg, part of the Nova Scotia Museum being one of the better known, along with Ross Farm's Agricultural Living Museum. Don't, however, overlook the smaller community museums, where locals still congregate for suppers and quilting bees and village meetings. A wealth of knowledge is contained in each of these museums, from the 1800's farming life in Parkdale/Maplewood to the truly impressive historical complex on Shelburne's waterfront. Squint your eyes and you feel like you've moved back in time, to the 1780's. Many of the museums host artists' openings, provide space for group meetings, offer school trips with hands on activities making them a vital and integral part of our small communities.
