Farm Museums in Southern Germany and Austria Throughout Germany and Austria are many open-air museums displaying typical old farms and local buildings, excellently restored for public viewing. The most famous building in the Black Forest is probably the Vogtsbauernhof - a centuries old farm that is the centerpiece of the near the village of Gutach . The Vogtsbauernhof is the only farmhouse at the museum that was not moved from another location. There are many other buildings to include mills, a bakehouse, a distillery, a chapel and blacksmith shops. Several folklore and lifestyle exhibits and at various times you can view demonstrations of all the old crafts. Seldom do I visit the Schwarzwald without a walkthru of this wonderful old Frelichtmuseum. This Open-air Museum is located in the old town of Bad Windsheim which is about 24 km northeast of Rothenburg o.d.T . The has 60 plus original buildings representing the rural past of Franconia and is one of the largest of its type in southern Germany. Lots of farms, houses, handicraft and workshops, and mills throughout the property. We visited in June 1999 and one of my 10 yr old daughter's favorite memories was seeing a shepherd near the front gate with his flock of sheep. A worthwhile half-day trip (or less) if you are staying in or near Rothenburg for a few days.
