    Technology in the Heartland: Research
New information technologies such as GPS (Global Positioning Satellites), geographic information systems (GIS), and remotely sensed imagery are changing the ways in which farmers manage their land. These technologies are synonymous with progressive agricultural practices including precision farming ? the science of increasing crop yield through a site?specific field management plan. Rather than cultivating the field as a whole, precision farming allows the grower to identify and distinguish relatively uniform regions (or zones) within a field and write a "prescription" for how each zone should be farmed. The data gathered from GPS, GIS and remotely sensed imagery enables growers to improve crop production efficiency and reduce environmental pollution; application of seed, fertilizer, and pesticide can be adjusted to meet the requirements of a specified zone. GPS satellites transmit signals picked up by user receivers to define the receiver's location. With this information and on-board sensors, farm equipment can monitor crop yields and guide applications of crop inputs like fertilizers and herbicides. A more accurate GPS system - DGPS (differentially corrected GPS) - has been developed to alleviate errors in measurement caused by atmospheric conditions like wind, clouds, and lightning. DGPS receiving systems are now available on tractors, combines, drills, planters, spray rigs, and any other farm machinery in order to calculate the average mass bushels of the crop and the wet and dry yield of the crop. Up to 250 hours of data can be stored on a PC card in a handheld device similar to a PDA.
