Poultry Nutrient Management Awareness Program for Growers
Printable PDF Version (2 pages) At the request of the poultry industry, an awareness program for nutrient management was developed and delivered for contract poultry growers throughout the state. This program was planned through a multi-disciplinary group, the Water Quality/Nutrient Management Task Force, which is a comprehensive research and extension task force composed of extension specialists and researchers. The program focused on the following major topics:
  • Utilization of poultry waste nutrients in forage production. Nutrient management regulations in poultry (where we have been, where we currently are, and where we are going). Components of Nutrient Management Plans for poultry. Alternative uses of poultry litter, especially as a cattle feed for beef producers.
The overall program was developed, then followed, by an agent in-service training program. A special communication plan was developed for use by agents and specialists in communicating availability of training to poultry producers. Following the in-service training, 12 individual poultry trainings were held in the poultry-growing central and southern parts of the state between May 11 and June 1, 2000.
Workshop Evaluation
A total of 297 evaluations were received from more than 300 poultry growers who attended these workshops. The evaluation instrument documented the high value of the information and satisfaction by participants, and in addition, identified needs of poultry growers.

Risk Management 2000
Printable PDF version (8 pages) Mississippi's crop producers face special challenges due to higher input costs and lower prices received for their products. The key to coping with this situation is to pay close attention to management and marketing strategies. Crop producers always can depend on their local county agricultural agents for management help. This booklet summarizes tested techniques and tips to help sustain a thriving farm operation. The final page highlights Extension publications which provide m ore detail about producing certain crops.
Whole Farm Management
  • Consider new crops and crop combinations. Winter wheat, crop rotations, double-cropping, and niche crops may offer opportunities to reduce financial risks and make a profit.
  • Renegotiate land rents. Look for opportunities to renegotiate rents more in line with current low prices and earning power of the land.
  • Take marginal lands out of production.

BEEF MANAGEMENT
SUCKLER COWS
Selecting a Stock Bull
In the post decoupling era beef producers will be more exposed to market demands for high quality stock. Genetic potential has a major effect on cattle performance and by selecting a stock bull of high genetic merit suckler farmers can improve the quality and performance of the beef animals produced from the cattle breeding herd. When purchasing a bull two factors need to be taken into consideration – visual assessment and performance figures. Visual assessment – some points to consider:
  • good hindquarter development; soundness of legs and feet; thickness of loin; depth and width of chest.
Performance figures
These will be in the form of Estimated Breeding Values (EBV’s) which determine how much of the bull’s breeding potential is due to his genetic make up rather than feeding and management factors. Bulls can be classified as carcase or maternal. To produce quality suckled calves select a bull with a high Beef Value which is determined by the EBV’s for the carcase traits, 200 day weight, 400 day day weight, muscle score, muscle depth and back fat thickness.
