Farm Management Applications
The world of farming demands timely and current information. The Internet can provide this information in a relatively easy and convenient way. Therefore, the match between agriculture and the Internet is a good one.
  • Need to know the weather report for the next few days?
  • Check the hourly updated weather reports.
  • Interested in the prices of grains, livestock or oilseeds?
  • Commodity prices from most major world markets are posted daily or more frequently.
  • Looking for a part for your tractor? John Deere provides a service manual that presents a name and a picture of the available part inventory.
  • Want to communicate with your lawyer or accountant? Leave a message on the Internet.

University of Maryland at College Park Marketing provides the economic opportunity to apply farm management principles. With an effective marketing program, farmers use their management skills to ensure continuing profits. Poor marketing, on the other hand, can discredit a sound farm management decision if the price assumed in the analysis is not received. For example, a partial budget analysis might show that a farmer could increase farm income by diversifying into double-cropped soybeans and wheat. However, that decision is based on the farmer receiving at least $6.75 per bushel for soybeans and $3.90 for wheat. Before the farmer diversifies, he or she needs to develop a marketing plan that helps achieve these price goals. Agricultural marketing is a key component of any farm management plan. Although farmers must invest time and work to develop a successful marketing plan, the rewards may justify the effort. The following seven strategies will help farmers develop a marketing plan. These approaches are not mutually exclusive, merely different ways to market farm products successfully. Examples are given to show how the strategies might apply to different agricultural enterprises.

Integrated Farm Management Systems: Executive Summary
The concept of Integrated Farm Management Systems (IFMS) is based around the productivity and marketing opportunities offered by the seamless integration of electronics based farm technologies. In essence, IFMS would provide a framework, based on a standardised communications platform, for the collection of all data at the farm level. Structured around individual animal Electronic Identification (EID), IFMS would facilitate improved management of production outputs against inputs as well as provide a basis for food traceability, an issue that will become of critical importance in the future. The objective of IFMS, as applied to pastoral farming, can be described as: "to maximize the economic return from the sustainable supply of consumer safe, internationally compliant food products, using pasture-based technologies that incorporate fully traceable food chain linkages throughout the production, processing and marketing structure." There is growing recognition of the need for greater and smarter use of information and communications technologies in industry and the agricultural sector in particular has much to gain from these technologies. This need was recognized by New Zealand Agritech Inc., the representative body of the agritech industry and New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) and resulted in the commissioning of this study.

Current Situation
Mississippi agriculture operates within a diversity of soils and topography, aquifers, riparian and coastal zones, crop pests, and wildlife. This complexity also creates possible alternative uses and values for those resources. The State's political environment thus includes economic and political interests in agriculture, rural communities, urban development, outdoor recreation, and the environment. Mississippians face a number of important agricultural and resource policy issues. The state's farmers currently receive roughly $275 million per year in federal commodity payments. However, federal budget pressures and political shifts could limit future federal commodity programs. Mississippi agriculture is also subject to potential restrictions from the Endangered Species Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Food Quality Protection Act and FIFRA, Conservation Compliance programs, state laws, and local restrictions. The U.S. Congress, the Mississippi Legislature, and local governments have been dealing with the following items affecting agriculture:

Mid-winter Grain Storage Decisions
Melvin Brees
Farm Business Management
MO Value Added Development Center
Mid-October corn and soybean prices were significantly lower than pre-harvest price highs in early September. Anticipation of a price recovery and managing cash income for "cash basis" income tax calculations provided many producers with reasons to store corn and soybeans. However, the decision to store tended to ignore or overlook important market signals. Futures market carry and cash market basis provide signals for making grain storage decisions. The price premium offered by distant month futures contracts, or market carry, represents the return the futures market is offering to pay for storage until the delivery month. Basis (the price spread between cash and futures price) is how the cash market encourages or discourages cash grain movement (see table, Using Basis as a Market Signal for Grain Storage Decisions ). A weak basis (wide spread between cash and futures price) is a signal to delay sales and store grain. Strong (narrow) basis signals the market is bidding for grain and discourages storage. While basis contracts can lock in basis and futures spreads may capture market carry, most producers attempt to capture basis and market carry by storing cash grain. Using Basis as a Market Signal for Grain Storage Decisions Basis is: Expect futures prices to: Weak
(Expected to Strengthen) Strong
(Risk that basis might weaken) Increase Store Cash Grain

September, 1997 Final Report Table of Contents Executive Summary Recommendations Acknowledgments 1.0 Introduction ... Appendix 2 - Interview Guide Used with Producer Groups Executive Summary Farm business managers have entered the information age. Today's society has evolved from the 'industrial age' to a new era that is dominated by information and technology. As a result, new technologies have been developed to receive, sort, store and evaluate information. These technologies include the use of computers, facsimiles, teleconferencing, video conferencing, CD Roms, Internet connections, etc. All sectors of society are learning to access and manage increasing amounts of information. The agricultural sector is no exception. The Saskatchewan farm business manager wants to utilize information technologies to access information which could improve the operation and profitability of the farm. An AIMS/AFIF Committee will address the information technology training needs of farm managers.
