Farmers, Ranchers, and Agricultural Managers
Nature of the Work Working Conditions Employment Training, Other Qualifications, and Advancement ... Sources of Additional Information
Significant Points
  • Modern farming requires knowledge of new developments in agriculture, and work experience acquired through growing up on a farm or through a small number of internships now available.
  • Overall employment is projected to decline because of increasing productivity and consolidation of farms.
  • Aquaculture and horticulture should provide better employment opportunities.
  • Developments in value-added marketing and organic farming are making small-scale farming economically viable again.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top American farmers, ranchers, and agricultural managers direct the activities of one of the world’s largest and most productive agricultural sectors. They produce enough food and fiber to meet the needs of the United States and produce a surplus for export. Farmers and ranchers Responsibilities of farmers and ranchers range from caring for livestock, to operating machinery, to maintaining equipment and facilities. The size of the farm or ranch often determines which of these tasks farmers and ranchers will handle themselves. Operators of small farms usually perform all tasks, physical and administrative. They keep records for management and tax purposes, service machinery, maintain buildings, and grow vegetables and raise animals. Operators of large farms, on the other hand, have employees who help with the physical work that small-farm operators do themselves. Although employment on most farms is limited to the farmer and one or two family workers or hired employees, some large farms have 100 or more full-time and seasonal workers. Some of these employees are in nonfarm occupations, working as truck drivers, sales representatives, bookkeepers, and computer specialists.

Practising good farm management
By Gerry McDonagh The first of May this year marked four years of REPS participation and a new five year REPS 3 plan for Sean O'Farrell from Ballinveiney, Toomevara, Co Tipperary. This date was also significant in that it was his first day to farm organically under Supplementary Measure 6.
Organic supplementary measure
The current animals on the farm, however, will never gain full organic status as only calves born 3 months after conversion began on 1 May will qualify. The cows don't have to be organic to produce organic calves and he can continue to use his current Limousin stock bull. He is even free to use AI.
Organic farming
He doesn't think that the move to organic farming will impact on weanling performance. "I'm hopeful that by practising good farm management practices like rotating the grazing and silage ground areas that this will give better worm control which will help to maintain the performance of the animals.''

ABSTRACT In production agriculture, good management is demonstrated by profits that are persistently greater than those of similar neighboring farms. This research examined the effects of management practices on risk-adjusted profit per acre for Kansas farms over 1990-1999. The management practices were price, cost, yield, planting intensity, and technology adoption (less-tillage). Cost management, planting intensity, and technology adoption had the greatest effect on profit per acre, and cash price management was found to have the smallest impact. If producers wish to have continuously high profits, their efforts are best spent in management practices over which they have the most control.

overview
The farm business environment is more competitive and more international in scope than ever before. Managers must not only be highly skilled and knowledgeable of production techniques, but have to confront many complex financial decisions. Farming is a business with considerable uncertainty and risk. The major goals of this ERS research program are to provide objective and timely economic analyses of the financial conditions in agriculture , to assess how current and emerging production technologies affect farms and whether these changes pose special risks to farm financial viability, and to determine whether farmers' use of adaptive management strategies contributes to economic success. Evaluating Opportunities for Niche Markets
Stan Ernst, Program Manager
Dave Hahn, Professor
Agricultural, Environmental, and Development Economics A couple times each generation, we see a flurry of interest in "niche markets," products promoted with the idea of bringing new revenue to rural America. From where we sit, three related sets of issues offer good signals for evaluating the "next big thing" for rural Ohio. This article touches briefly on some things we're being asked more frequently about by food consumers and producers. Evaluate your idea by considering consumption trends, basic demographics, and health-related issues. Consumption Trends. Demographic Trends. It's no secret that . By 2030, one-in-five Americans will be a senior citizen. Look around your family or job. Boomers are generally well off financiallythey'll be the bulk of the 8 million households with $100,000-plus incomes in 2010. Income is the major determinant in food spending, and since a lot of these folks' income is investment based, the general economy matters to food demand in the next decade. They're inclined to eat out because it's convenient. Despite financial conservatism, Boomers want what they like. They'll pay for food experiences and ingredients they loveor remember from childhood. Nostalgia is important to themtheir food preferences are likely to be regional and based on their roots. But they've moved around enough to broaden tastes somewhat. As more Boomers move "home" in retirement, they'll bring demand for foods and ingredients that are not traditional to the area.

Enhancing Farm Income Through Value-Added Agriculture
By Tom Sporleder,
Farm Income Enhancement Professor, Ron Overmyer,
Coordinator of ABE Center, and Jeff Layman,
Extension Agent Agriculture has been a rapidly changing industry for many years. Farmers understand that commodity prices over time reflect the cost of production with little margin. In fact, the latest U.S. Department of Agriculture statistics indicate that only 20 cents of every dollar consumers spend for food reaches the farm gate. The remaining 80 cents goes for adding value in processing, marketing, distribution, and retailing. Can farmers participate in gaining some share of the 80 cents that currently goes elsewhere? Of course the answer is yes. Some farmers, particularly through farmer cooperatives, already participate in value-added processing and capture some value-added margin for themselves. Outstanding examples of this include Goldkist with poultry and Land 'O Lakes with dairy.
Value-Added Activities
Value-added activities are ones that add value to a product or service from the buyers' perspective. The forms of utility, or usefulness to buyers, include transforming commodities into other forms, such as processing wheat into flour. Another source of utility is time utility, such as storing.

One of the Important Steps in Marketing
Is To Develop A Marketing Plan

By: James Hartsfield
Area Farm Management Agent
Sampson and Duplin Counties
October - December 2000 For many fruit and vegetable growers, this is the time of the year to take a look at your current marketing Strategies. Marketing of vegetables and small fruits should be continuous and a constant part of the producer's job. It is not done once and for all and then forgotten. Farmers must always be on the lookout for markets and analyzing their market strategy so they can improve their position in the market. The key to successful marketing is having a plan and following it. In developing a plan, farmers should go through a certain amount of analysis to determine the goals of farm and family. Use the following steps to develop a marketing plan:
  • Know the cost of production for the commodities currently produced and for commodities the grower intends to produce.
  • Know past production history.
  • Know past marketing history.
  • Establish future goals.
  • Provide market research for new commodities.
