    85. Sustainable Farm Management
This approach to management, called partial budgeting in economics, can be used to improve the expected performance of a farm during the initial planning
    http://www.ssu.missouri.edu/faculty/jikerd/papers/SFTWholeFarm.htm
Sustainable Farm Management John Ikerd A farm is an organization – a purposeful arrangement of diverse elements into a coherent whole. A farm is an arrangement of land, plants, animals, buildings, equipment, and people, designed to meet specific human needs. Any organization, including a farm, is defined as much by the arrangement of its different elements or components as by the components that comprise the whole. Farm management is thus the science and art of arranging the various components of a farm so it may better fulfill its purpose. The sustainability of any organization ultimately depends on its regenerative capacity. Only living organisms are capable of regeneration. Thus, a sustainable farm must be managed as a living organization. In living organisms, components or parts are inseparable aspects of the whole. Thus, sustainable farming requires a holistic approach to farm management – an approach that manages the farm as a whole rather than as a collection of separable components or parts. The holistic farm manager looks for opportunities to rearrange diverse farm enterprises, methods, and practices across space, over time, and among individuals, to improve the effectiveness with which the various components work together to fulfill the purpose of the farm.

    Bethany Mattingly, Undergraduate Research Assistant
Overview of U.S. Specialty Corn Production The grain/oilseed industry is undergoing change. These changes are driven by more discriminating consumers and by competitive processors. Advances in plant genetics and processing technologies work together to produce and process grains and oilseeds that have specific food-, feed-, and industrial-use properties. While the current market for specialty food-, feed-, and industrial-use grain and oilseed products is relatively small, interest in growing these crops is increasing. Processors who want specialty crops offer incentives, in the form of premiums, to producers to grow them. Missouri producers have shown particular interest in growing value-enhanced corn varieties. The map below indicates the primary growing regions in the United States for five types of value-enhanced corn varieties. North and extreme southeast Missouri are included in these regions. Concentrating only on your financial performance will not necessarily improve your profitability. When analyzing performance, both financial and production indicators should be assessed to understand where your operation should fine tune and make changes. There are numerous sources of financial and production benchmark indicators on the Internet. This site links you to benchmark information provided across Canada by provincial agricultural departments. In the coming months, more national and international benchmark information will be provided on this site.
