Introduction
The management of farm businesses is an increasingly complex process, taking into account economic, technical, social, political and environmental change. Multiple and often conflicting objectives mean the efficient farm manager of the 21st Century has to be a highly skilled, technical, administrative, resource and financial controller. Expertise is needed in diverse areas from the implications of the Common Agricultural Policy through to the production and environmental consequences associated with the use of a range of agricultural inputs. Robot Milker Teaching and research FMU members are involved in the teaching of a number of undergraduate degrees, such as Agricultural Business Management, Rural Resource Management and the Management option of the Agricultural degree. The Unit members are also involved in the MSc in Agricultural Management and its members supervise several Higher Degree students. Its research activities include resource use management, farm business planning and control, decision making techniques, modeling, policy analysis and the development of sustainable farming systems. Wider interests include the environmental and ecological consequences of changes in the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and climatic change effects on land use allocation in England and Wales. The FMU also has links with colleagues in the Department of Land Management and Development.

ARE History
C.E. Bishop and D.M. Hoover Even before today's Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics was formally established, economics courses were taught at the Agricultural and Mechanical College of North Carolina at Raleigh, which would eventually become North Carolina State University. During the 1897-98 school year, just 10 years after the opening of the college, a course in Agricultural Economics was required of all seniors in the College of Agriculture. This initial offering was followed in subsequent years by such courses as History of Agricultural and Rural Economics, Farm Economics, and Farm Management. From 1908 until 1920 new courses added included Banking and Farm Credit, Organization for Farm Marketing and Credit, and Marketing Distribution. Until 1919, all these courses were taught by a single faculty member. The 1920s, 1930s

Department of Horticultural Economics
The Department of Horticultural Economics is composed of two divisions: Horticultural Business Management and Information Science, and Bioresources Economics. The former division consists of three laboratories: Farm Management, Agricultural Information Science, and International Agriculture Studies; and the latter of two laboratories: Agricultural Economics, and Agricultural Marketing. The Department as a whole intends to cover, in its fields of study and research, all the social-science-related aspects of horticulture/ agriculture, natural resources and environmental issues. Our department benefits from the other departments in the Faculty, because the research of natural-scientific fields is vital in understanding the complicated social issues revolving around horticulture/ agriculture. The Department of Horticultural Economics is the smallest department in the Faculty, with only 12 staff members and 128 students. The research and teaching in this department is based on the basic and applied fields of agricultural economics and management. The research fields of agricultural economics have been expanded to include not only agricultural production but also agri-business and marketing. In addition to conventional topics of agricultural economics in Japan, particular emphasis has recently been placed on research fields such as agriculture in foreign countries (including the developing world), and trade-links of economic development. The method of econometric analysis has recently been applied to agricultural economics and management, in accordance with the development of information science.
