Purdue University-West Lafayette, Indiana Changes in farm numbers and the average acreage per farm continue to receive much attention. Over the past decade, these data for Indiana indicate that the number of small and large-scale farms has increased while a decline in the number of moderate-scale farms has occurred. We define a moderate-scale farm as 200-600 acres. These trends support the idea that Extension's farmer audience is becoming more heterogenous. Nolan and Lasley contend that for programming purposes, Extension continues to assume that its audience is relatively homogenous and this perception has resulted in a substantial erosion of political support. Another concern is the lack of targeted educational materials for those with moderate-scale farms.

Economic decisions have invaded farm production and business management. The traditional manager is challenged to continually evaluate the economic consequences of production decisions, management methods, and marketing strategies. Specialists in farm management have had difficulty getting audiences to economic educational programs, depending primarily on production topic meetings to broach the economic issues. Producer meetings and field days attract far more participants than meetings on management topics. Farm management specialists need to find a way to bring economic education to these everyday events to reach a larger number of producers. Every field day, tour, and on-farm demonstration represents an opportunity to teach everyday economics to farmers. Kansas State University area agricultural economists are using "fill-in- the-blank" posters to show production costs and returns for crop and livestock enterprises at research station field days and during on-farm demonstrations. Machinery and equipment lined up for show or to make room in the shop for visitors during these events display placards listing the costs of machine ownership and operation. Grain handling facilities, livestock confinement systems, dairy barns, and other farm real estate improvements bear similar posters showing the costs, expected useful life, and per unit production costs of building, maintaining, and paying taxes on these improvements.

Conclusions
The use of model farms and the aggregation across whole aquifers, based on model data, can only provide a broad-brush estimate of the cost at the aquifer level of the revised management of nitrogen with the aim of reducing nitrogen leaching. Although the models are intended to reflect `typical' management practices on farms, we have not been able to validate how representative these practices are on farms and they are a poor substitute for more detailed information based on survey data. However, the approach we have used allows different nitrogen management strategies to be compared on the same type of farm and the cost of strategies on one type of farm to be compared to strategies on another type of farm. At the farm and aquifer level, the data gives an indication of the economic significance (at the farm gate) of strategies designed to reduce nitrate leaching and provides information to assist in the targeting of additional work which may be required to further refine such estimates.

Farm Management Tour will feature entrepreneurs
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The 2005 Indiana Farm Management Tour will take place June 28-29 and will include visits to southern Indiana farms in Clark and Scott counties. In addition to farm management education, this year's tour participants will learn about each stop's particular human resource and entrepreneurship aspects. "These farmers have aligned themselves with current issues in agriculture, one being local economic development," said tour coordinator Alan Miller. "In addition, these farms have also found ways to keep their families involved in farming." The tour will begin on June 28 with a 1 p.m. stop at the Comer farm in Scott County, which will feature more traditional tour topics of grain farming and working with different landowners. How to manage and organize a multigenerational business also will be discussed. Chris Hurt, Purdue University Extension marketing specialist, will speak at 3:30 p.m. on the outlook for crops and livestock. The June 28 evening program, which will begin at 6:30 p.m., leads into the following day's stops. Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman will speak at Scottsburg Senior High School on issues such as agritourism, agricultural economic development and rural economic development in Indiana.

Current Situation
Mississippi agriculture operates within a diversity of soils and topography, aquifers, riparian and coastal zones, crop pests, and wildlife. This complexity also creates possible alternative uses and values for those resources. The State's political environment thus includes economic and political interests in agriculture, rural communities, urban development, outdoor recreation, and the environment. Mississippians face a number of important agricultural and resource policy issues. The state's farmers currently receive roughly $275 million per year in federal commodity payments. However, federal budget pressures and political shifts could limit future federal commodity programs. Mississippi agriculture is also subject to potential restrictions from the Endangered Species Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Food Quality Protection Act and FIFRA, Conservation Compliance programs, state laws, and local restrictions. The U.S. Congress, the Mississippi Legislature, and local governments have been dealing with the following items affecting agriculture:

About the KFBM Program
Since 1962, the Kentucky Farm Business Management Program (KFBM) has been serving the agricultural industry by assisting member farmers track financial performance, determine the profitability of individual enterprises, improve management practices, complete tax returns, set business and personal goals, and make sound management decisions. The KFBM Program's design also helps improve farm management on non-member Kentucky farms by providing factual economic information about Kentucky farms for use in research, teaching, and extension.
Organization
The KFBM Program is a joint effort of the University of Kentucky Department of Agricultural Economics and five Area Farm Management Groups. Each of these five areas elects a board of directors from their membership. The local board of directors sets policy and direction for the group within the framework of the KFBM Program.
Mission Statement

ABSTRACT In production agriculture, good management is demonstrated by profits that are persistently greater than those of similar neighboring farms. This research examined the effects of management practices on risk-adjusted profit per acre for Kansas farms over 1990-1999. The management practices were price, cost, yield, planting intensity, and technology adoption (less-tillage). Cost management, planting intensity, and technology adoption had the greatest effect on profit per acre, and cash price management was found to have the smallest impact. If producers wish to have continuously high profits, their efforts are best spent in management practices over which they have the most control.
