Farm Management Option
Agribusiness, Farm, and Financial Management Major
Students in the farm management option in the Department of Agricultural and Consumer Economics study the principles of economics, finance, risk, and the decision-making process all central to the successful management of farms. Students develop skills to combine and manage land, labor, and capital resources for a competitive return. Students choose professional farm management, direct management, or both. Students may also learn how to appraise farmland and other assets. Farm and other asset appraisal is a growing and important part of professional farm management or can be pursued as a profession in itself.

Career Opportunities in Farm Management
Students prepare to manage a farms as owners, tenants, or employees; to work as professional farm managers for off-site owners; or to work in real estate appraisal which requires state certification. The farm management option offers several courses approved for state certification. A farm management student transferred to the University of Illinois after two years at a community college. His goal was to work close to production agriculture through farm management at a bank or at a farm management firm. He served as an intern at his local bank and worked shoulder to shoulder with the bank's farm management staff and the farmers they worked with. "I saw how the farm manager's knowledge and experience can make the most for the landowner and the farmer. My courses in farm management laid the groundwork for my internship, and that experience helped me decide which classes to take my senior yearmarketing, rural appraisal, finance and accounting, for example. Farm management demands expertise in all these areas."

Swine Economics Report

September 20, 2005
During the first seven months of 2005, U.S. pork exports were up 26.2% compared to January-July 2004. July pork exports were an amazing 37% higher than 12 months earlier. Through July of this year, the U.S. exported 1.554 billion pounds of pork or 13.2% of our total production. At the current pace, 2005 pork exports will surpass last year's record export total before Halloween. Pork imports during the first seven months of 2005 were down by 9.6% compared to the same months last year. Imports from Canada were down by 8.4% and imports from Denmark were down 29.7%. Through July, the U.S. imported 0.572 billion pounds of pork or an amount equal to 4.9% of our domestic production. Net pork exports (exports minus imports) during the first seven months of 2005 were equal to 8.3% of U.S. pork production. This compares to net exports of 5.1% during the same period in 2004. Thus, pork trade has soaked up an extra 3.2% of U.S. production. Since pork production is up only 0.5% and the U.S. population is up nearly 1% compared to a year ago, per capita consumption is down by 4%. Despite this drop in supply and a 3% rate of inflation, retail pork prices in July were a fraction lower than in July 2004. Unlike export demand which is skyrocketing, domestic pork demand is declining. During the first seven months of 2005, Japan, our biggest foreign customer, purchased 651.3 million pounds of U.S. pork, 16.7% more than a year earlier and 41.9% of total U.S. pork exports. The lack of beef imports from the U.S. or Canada may be boosting Japanese demand for U.S. pork; but it interesting to note that Japanese purchases of U.S. pork are up by 16.7% this year while the rest of the world is buying 34% more U.S. pork than last year. I don't expect the eventual reopening of the Japanese market to U.S. beef to have a huge impact on U.S. pork exports.

by Lize Ferreira Farm management comprises all the processes that are concerned with the management of the production factors of a farm business, namely land, labour, and capital, in order to attain certain objectives. The Directorate: Agricultural Economics concentrates mainly on capital as a production factor. Various computer programs and models are used to draft enterprise budgets for a variety of enterprises. Enterprise budgets are a very handy tool when planning a new enterprise or determining the profitability of an existing enterprise. We can either use a standard enterprise budget as a template for a specific farm business, or we can design a new enterprise budget that takes your unique circumstances into consideration. The basic decisions of the farming business are: (a) What to produce or what combination of different enterprises to follow?
