The Unknown Rebel " — This famous photo , taken by Associated Press photographer Jeff Widener , depicts a lone protester whose actions halted the progress of a column of advancing tanks for over half an hour. The 1989 Tiananmen Square Protests Tiananmen Square Massacre or June 4th Massacre or 6/4 incident ), were a series of student -led demonstrations held in Tiananmen Square in Beijing , the People's Republic of China , between April 15 and June 4 . The protest denounced China's economic instability and political corruption and was violently suppressed by the PRC government On May 4 , approximately 100,000 students and workers peacefully marched in Beijing making demands for adherence to socialist principles of equality , and protesting government corruption . Although the government declared martial law on May 20 , the demonstrations continued. After deliberation among Communist party leaders, a forceful military resolution was ordered, and troops and tanks of the 27th Army of the People's Liberation Army were sent into the city to restore order. These forces were confronted by Chinese workers in the streets of Beijing and the ensuing violence resulted in both civilian and army deaths. Even today, the Chinese government disallows any tallies made to count the actual number of dead.
