Review of the film and plot summary.
http://www.haro-online.com/movies/almost_famous.html
Almost Famous In an otherwise boring summer, Cameron Crowe's Almost Famous is a wonderful breath of fresh air. This is Crowe's first movie since the Jerry Maguire , and the wait was certainly worth it. Crowe has a knack for writing dialogue that is heartfelt without descending to the level of melodramatic. Almost Famous is a fictionalized account of Crowe's experiences writing for Rolling Stone in the mid 1970s, when he was only fifteen. The movie is less about actual music and more about the love of music. It is the story of a boy experiencing the world and turning (literally and figuratively) into a man. William Miller (Patrick Fugit) is the character based on Crowe. He lives with his overbearing but loving mother (Frances McDormand, Wonder Boys , Primal Fear ). His mother was too much for his sister, who left to become a flight attendant and left him with a cache of records. The records were the catalyst in William's life. He was much younger than his peers, and constantly picked upon. He could escape in the music, getting lost with Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell, and others. He begins writing about rock for his school newspaper and mails his articles to Lester Bangs (Philip Seymour Hoffman, Flawless

Harriet Tubman was a slave born on a plantation in Maryland. When she was thirteen years old she threw herself between a fellow slave and the plantation overseer who was about to whip him. The overseer struck Harriet on the head. For the rest of her life she had a form of epilepsy. When she was 29 Harriet Tubman escaped from slavery and dedicated the rest of her life to rescuing other slaves and to civil rights, including women's suffrage.

Exposing the Happy Birthday story
... Op-Ed
By J Byron
Sat Jul 5th, 2003 at 04:37:20 PM EST
Exposing the Happy Birthday story:
An editorial by J. Byron, May 2003, rev. June 2003
In this article, I attempt to answer three questions: 1 - What is that song Good Morning to All , and how does it relate to Happy Birthday to You ? 2 - Is the melody to Happy Birthday to You public domain? 3 - Are the lyrics to Happy Birthday to You also public domain? There are many references to Happy Birthday Good Morning to All - and the few that do, don't tell you about its undeniable legal status. Is this deliberate, or just ignorance of the facts? I don't know. Two such examples are an article at Attaché Magazine and the commonly cited article at snopes.com . In addition, some articles may unintentionally present inaccurate information. An article posted at lawyers.com incorrectly states that Good Morning to All was written in 1895 but unpublished . That assertion is untrue, and makes an important legal difference.

NL Municipality wants to ban famous hacker gathering
24 May, 2005 Campaigns Freedom of speech Security Governance URGENT PRESS RELEASE WHAT THE HACK (23.05.2005) The organisers of 'What the Hack', the 2005 edition of a series of famous Dutch outdoor hacker conferences, were told that their conference will not receive the municipal permit needed for the event to happen. 'What the Hack" is planned to take place on a large event-campground in Liempde (The Netherlands), between the 28th and 31st of July 2005. About 3.000 participants from all over the world are expected. 'What The Hack' is appealing the decision. What The Hack is scheduled to take place near Boxtel, a village near Den Bosch in the south of The Netherlands. The mayor of Boxtel, J.A.M. van Homelen, cites "fear of disturbances of law and order and danger to public safety". This is noteworthy because the previous editions of the event saw no incidents of any kind – neither at the event itself nor on the Internet. Organiser Rop Gonggrijp, co-founder of the first Dutch Internet provider XS4ALL and former editor-in-chief of the 1980's hacker magazine 'Hack-Tic' assumes the problem boils down to a misunderstanding: "The mayor seems to have a bit of an awkward perception of what we, the hackers, are going to be doing there. Yes, we think it's important that bad computer security is exposed. But computer break-ins are such a side issue for us. These are grown-up hackers: The participants that do deal with computer security issues have been working in the computer security industry for years."

200. History Of Mathematics Home Page
An overview of the subject and a famous 1900 speech describing the main mathematical problems. Includes a chronological list of mathematicians and their work.
http://aleph0.clarku.edu/~djoyce/mathhist/
Every culture on earth has developed some mathematics. In some cases, this mathematics has spread from one culture to another. Now there is one predominant international mathematics, and this mathematics has quite a history. It has roots in ancient Egypt and Babylonia, then grew rapidly in ancient Greece. Mathematics written in ancient Greek was translated into Arabic. About the same time some mathematics of India was translated into Arabic. Later some of this mathematics was translated into Latin and became the mathematics of Western Europe. Over a period of several hundred years, it became the mathematics of the world. There are other places in the world that developed significant mathematics, such as China, southern India, and Japan, and they are interesting to study, but the mathematics of the other regions have not had much influence on current international mathematics. There is, of course, much mathematics being done these and other regions, but it is not the traditional math of the regions, but international mathematics. By far, the most significant development in mathematics was giving it firm logical foundations. This took place in ancient Greece in the centuries preceding Euclid. See
