Great Scots!
Scotland has given rise to many more famous people, notable in the arts, literature, the sciences and as inventors, philosophers, architects and so on than would be expected for a country of such modest size and population. There have even been an occasional few infamous individuals known for their notoriety! Note that this list is just a sample of the Famous Scots we have biographies for. A much fuller list is included as part of the Gazetteer for Scotland database. It includes much more information on more than 1000 Scots or those with strong Scottish connections. Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. On the morning of May 8, 1902, the volcano Mount Pelee, on the Caribbean island of Martinique, vomited a superheated cloud of gas loaded with dust and rock. The turbulent cloud, impelled by its own weight, raced down the mountain faster than a hurricane, hugging the ground and heading for the coastal city of Saint-Pierre, about five miles away. It blasted everything in its path and left a blazing inferno. Within minutes, nearly 30,000 people lay deadcrushed, incinerated, asphyxiated by the scalding gas. The victims included the governor of the island and members of a "scientific commission" assembled to assess the volcanic threat. Only two people within the city survived.

ConneCT Kids colonial robin Early Connecticut History Before the first settlers came to Connecticut, robins lived here along with Native American tribes http://www.kidinfo.com/American_History/Native_Americans.html We watched them hunt and fish in the woodlands and streams. They made many trails to allow them to travel between villages to trade. You can still hike many of these trails today http://www.ctwoodlands.org/blue%20trails/bthistory.html#map These Native Americans gave something else to Connecticut – its name. The name Connecticut comes from a Native American word "Quinatucquet," which meant "Beside the Long Tidal River." Do you know how long the Connecticut River is? (Answer 360 miles from Vermont to Long Island Sound) I have flown over it many times. The first Europeans we saw landing on Connecticut shores were Dutch traders ( http://www.coldspringschool.com/history/early.html ) who sailed up the Connecticut River around the year 1614, and landed near Hartford. By the year 1633, they had purchased land from the Pequot Tribe and made a permanent settlement. Within the next year, we saw many English settlers from the Massachusetts Bay Colony, exploring throughout the Connecticut Valley area. They were impressed with the beauty of the countryside and decided to stay. It was in the town of Wethersfield (

    http://www.cah.utexas.edu/dodd/biography.html
    Biography of Jimmie Dodd
Much of the existing visual record of mid-20th century rural America is found in the archives of professional regional photographers. At their best, the images in these collections open a window on the world of private and public events that, taken together, shaped the United States as a cultural entity in the post-World War II era. The region represented in Jimmie A. Dodd's work is South Texas , a sparsely populated region dominated during his time by the King Ranch, Inc., a vast cattle-raising and oil production enterprise, and the bustling urban port of Corpus Christi. While unique in many respects, South Texas was not isolated. Mechanization of agriculture, advances in transportation, urbanization, industrialization, and World War II all contributed to changes in the land and its people. From 1937 to 1966, Jimmie Dodd was there with his camera, and the 11,000 Dodd negatives now housed in The Center for American History show that he knew his job and did it well. James Andrew Dodd was born in Houston, Texas on July 20, 1917 to Ellen Belle Horan and Earle Bartholomew Dodd. After graduating from high school, he worked as a mascot for the Missouri Pacific Railroad, and began taking photographs as a hobby in 1935. He later became a professional photographer when he received a $250 loan from

    History Globe
There are three innovative investigations into history at History Globe: Anglo-Apache Conflicts, The Oregon Trail Virtual Tour, and the Jamestown Online Adventure. All three are interesting ways to explore various segments of early United States history.
In Anglo-Apache Conflicts , you can explore the extent of the conflicts through the use of an interactive map. The most effective use of the map appeared to be its year-by-year scrolling ability. Use the arrows to quickly click from year to year to see how extensive the Apache lands were, where the forts were, and where the conflicts broke out. This is a basic little presentation, but helpful in putting these conflicts into historical context.
    The Oregon Trail Virtual Tour
allow you to explore this famous pioneer trail through the use of a clickable modern map, or a map from 1843. There is a short description of each of the landmark locations along the way, which gives you a sense of what it was like to travel this route long ago.
