      Guide to Reference Sources
This guide offers a list of sources for finding biographical information on chemists, with an emphasis on historical figures. While chemistry has a rich and extensive historical record, biographical information on most individuals is often sparse and limited to brief data about birth and death dates, education, employment, and major accomplishments. It's rare to find substantial published biographical information on chemists, unless the subject was very famous indeed. But perserverence and a little digging can often produce useful information.

Muir Biography Extracts ... Web Links A Brief Biography In the spring of 1868, a young man came to Yosemite and changed the world. Muir had just turned 30 that year. His first 11 years were spent in Dunbar, Scotland. The next 11 he spent in the backwoods of Wisconsin, working through the daylight hours, clearing the forest, holding a plow to a straight furrow behind a team of oxen, digging wells through hard bedrock, and taking an adult's part in subduing wild nature. Years later, in The Story of My Boyhood and Youth , he stressed the rigours of his childhood, but he seemed to feel that his strenuous years in Wisconsin prepared him well for his later wilderness ramblings. He also prepared throughout his childhood for his life as a naturalist by a close attention to the wonders of nature. Everything, it seemed, drew his eye and his mind, and all creatures drew his sympathy, whether the mice that ate the grain he had wrung from the earth by the sweat of his brow or the intelligent old ox Buck, who figured out how to open pumpkins to feast on the succulent inner flesh. As a teenager, he had no time for school and little opportunity for formal study. Yet his mind hungered for knowledge. When his father grudgingly gave permission for him to rise before the rest of the family to read, he took to rising at one in the morning. He wrote, "I had gained five hours, almost half a day! 'Five hours to myself!' I said. 'Five huge, solid hours!' I can hardly think of any other event of my life, any discovery I ever made that gave birth to joy so transportingly glorious as the possession of these five frosty hours."

PATIENTS WHO HAVE BEEN TREATED FOR CANCER BY NATUROPATHS IN CANADA
Cancer patients who have a fear of standard medical treatment for their condition, or who have failed therapy with radiation, or chemotherapy may seek alternative care. That is their right to do so. However, there is a very strong caveat that you need to pay attention to. Most Canadian Provinces, and most U.S. States have absolutely no regulation over naturopathic practitioners. Even when there are laws or regulations in place, most of these clinics are unsupervised. If these were medical clinics that operated this way, they would either lose their funding, or be out of business in a hurry. Naturopathic clinics for the most part use bogus screening tests, dubious "natural medical" devices, unproved laboratory tests, and non-standard treatments for serious conditions, like cancer.

This first part of the Alternative Medicine section of Health Care Information Resources offers access to general resources on the WWW in Alternative Medicine. Immediately below are links to pages that are inclusive, or encyclopedic, in nature. These first links each offer access to multiple alternative medicine topics. Following these links to inclusive resources, you will find a growing list of very specific resources on single topics in alternative medicine. You are sure to find something of interest in one or the other of these two sections! Now, there is an online dictionary which can be consulted for critical explanations of terms used in alternative therapies! * The Expanded Dictionary of Metaphysical Healthcare: Alternative Medicine, Paranormal Healing, and Related Methods is the work of Jack Raso, M.S., R.D., a writer on many topics in the field of alternative medicine, who is also the Director of Publications at the American Council on Science. The compiler of this dictionary is not sympathetic to "alternative medicine" and the "definitions" offered can sound quite negative, at times. Click on the name underlined above for access to a dictionary you can consult for an intriduction to many of the unfamiliar terms related to alternative healthcare. The * Skeptic's Dictionary , compiled by Robert T. Carroll, a professor of Philosophy at Sacramento City College, also offers a critical approach to alternative health care topics. You can consult the whole dictionary by clicking on the name underlined above, or you can simply browse its collection of entries on

HISTORY OF TECHNOLOGY As taught by
    Prof. Tim Richardson
Toronto, Canada BIOGRAPHY ASSIGNMENT The purpose of this assignment
is to help you understand how individual persons can discover / invent some "technological application of science" which, depending on the surrounding circumstances, can have a long-term effect on human life.
    • Sometimes an invention is special because if it did not take place, humans would continue to suffer some bad condition. Sometimes an invention is not really an invention of a new thing, but rather a "discovery" of a principle which, when understood, allows humans to do things which they could not previously understand.example: magnets. Sometimes an invention has strong social consequences which are beneficial eg. paper for communicating; and sometimes an invention or discovery has very negative consequences, eg. gunpowder used to propel projectiles

You task is to choose a person (or group of people) from history (any time period) and describe: 1. The main discovery / invention that they are most famous for
This must be something with clear technological implications, and not just pure science
