There are many who are sometimes thought to be Masons . The public may assume a person to be a Mason because of his good deeds and good behavior and this simple fact alone should say something to Masonry's antagonists! If a man achieves greatness, he's sometimes presumed to be a Mason; he is never presumed to be against Masonry!) M ore often than not, however, such connections are made by those who want to smear the reputation of an individual and feel that saying "He's a Mason." will do exactly that. Masons, their families, and their friends would not agree but a significant percentage of those listed on this page appear because of the smear attempts by Freemasonry's detractors. Bizarre, really.... In addition, there have been a few who were thought to be Masons simply because of their affiliation with other Masons. Few readers of this page will be familiar with the details of the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902 but this particular paragraph from the Quatuor Coronati Research Lodge (England) seems particular appropriate - and reminds us that the fantasy of associating non-Masons with the fraternity in order to create the appearance of conspiracies has been going on for more than a century. "As the front-line receded northwards and the Boers resorted to guerilla tactics the war assumed a different aspect. General De Wet became a hero among the Boers, always keeping just one step ahead of the British, yet still worrying them like a terrier whenever the opportunity presented itself. One brother wrote to the Editor of the AQC

Biographical Sources
RG#36
To avoid time-consuming steps, ask yourself these questions first:
  • Establish a starting point.
What time period is the person living or dead?
    What nationality?
    What profession?
  • Determine the type and amount of information you want.
    Just the birth/death date?
Directory-type (general occupation) information? Or, detailed account of personal life?
    Or, professional life?
  • For persons still living, does it matter if the information is up-to-date?
You can find book-length (extensive) biographies of an individual by searching with the personal name (in the format LAST NAME, FIRST NAME) as a subject In BobCat and the card catalog. Biographies can also be found under a broader category with the subheading "Biography"; this is especially useful in finding specialized directories. For example: ARTISTS BIOGRAPHY INDIANS OF NORTH AMERICA BIOGRAPHY ACTORS BIOGRAPHY SCIENTISTS BIOGRAPHY You can also use BobCat's Boolean Keyword search feature to combine the subject term BIOGRAPHY with relevant subject or title key words (for more details on how to do this, see BobCat Bulletin 5).

    Biographical Information
    LIBRARY GUIDE
A biography is an account of the special and important events in a person's life. It should not be confused with the similar sounding term bibliography , which is a listing of books and articles on a topic. Biographies may be brief and cover only basic information about a person's life such as dates of birth and death, education and vocation. A biography may also be very detailed, and cover the cultural background, outstanding accomplishments, and historical significance of an individual. Biographical sources cover both living and deceased persons, notable persons in particular countries, persons in specific occupations, celebrities, and civil and government leaders. It is helpful when searching for biographical information to know:
    • The person's full name and correct spelling (for example: Smith, Smyth or Smythe) date of birth date of death (when applicable) nationality or country of residence occupation or profession
This guide will assist you in locating biographical information. It is organized in three sections:

Thousands of sources in the Library and on the Internet may contain biographical information. This guide provides citations or links to many of them. By using some recommended search strategies on DELCAT you should be able to ferret out additional sources not listed here. Determining the appropriate biographical source involves first asking yourself three questions. These are: Depending on your answer to the first question, proceed either to the section in this guide covering biographical sources which are retrospective or general in scope (these include persons of all historical periods, including the present, or those who are dead) or to the section covering sources which are contemporary in scope (these include only living persons). Upon arriving at your jumping-off point, be prepared to ask yourself the second and third questions. Jump to top of page.
