Books About Music
Reference
The purpose of this list is to provide an overview of major reference books. It should be noted that many volumes are out of print or otherwise difficult to purchase (even though we have provided the links to Amazon). However, they are included here because they are still likely to be on local library shelves. Listings are organized from most general reference to more specific references. Reference works applicable to specific instruments can be found on the Instrumental page, and biographies of specific composers/performers can be found on the Biography page. We welcome feedback, suggestions, additions, and corrections to this information.

The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (20-Volume Set) , Stanley Sadie (Editor). Norton/Grove. 1980/1995. ISBN (paperback)
The New Grove II Dictionary of Music and Musicians (29-Volume Set) (paperback)
This 20-volume behemoth is the granddaddy of music references covering every type of music, from classical to popular to jazz. Though it is expensive to purchase, it is commonly available in university and larger public libraries. It is an invaluable source of information on musical history, composers, artists, music theory, instruments, musical forms, terms and definitions, musical cities and institutions, and more. This edition (sometimes known as Grove 6) is the culmination of more than 12 years of work by 2,400 scholars, more than doubling the 10-volume Grove 5. Originally published in 1980, the 1995 paperback version contains some minor corrections, but some sections are now out of date, particularly those on modern music. The second edition is to be published in early 2001, and will include an additional nine volumes (totalling over 25,000 pages). This is the single most comprehensive music reference available.

Research Guide to Canadian Genealogical Resources at the Connecticut State Library
This research guide is an introduction to several major Canadian genealogical resources in the State Library's collection and how to best utilize them. The presence of many of these resources is the result of one individual, Robert R. Bisaillon. An avid genealogist, author, and teacher, Mr. Bisaillon amassed an extensive collection of materials dealing with Acadian and French-Canadian genealogy. After his death on October 25, 1994, it was announced that he had bequeathed his book collection to the Connecticut State Library. It is through his generosity that the Connecticut State Library is able to offer many of the following Canadian genealogical sources: Other Institutions with Relevant Canadian Collections Introductory Resources
A list of introductory books on Canadian genealogy at the Connecticut State Library follows. The list provided below is by no means exhaustive. Researchers should consult the library's main catalogs, the Manuscripts and Archives Catalog, and State Archives research guides to ascertain if there are additional resources. Baxter, Angus.

National Anthem: O Canada
Official Lyrics of O Canada!
O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command. With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free! From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
The History of the National Anthem
Summary "O Canada" was proclaimed Canada's national anthem on July 1, 1980, 100 years after it was first sung on June 24, 1880. The music was composed by Calixa Lavallée, a well-known composer; French lyrics to accompany the music were written by Sir Adolphe-Basile Routhier. The song gained steadily in popularity. Many English versions have appeared over the years. The version on which the official English lyrics are based was written in 1908 by Mr. Justice Robert Stanley Weir. The official English version includes changes recommended in 1968 by a Special Joint Committee of the Senate and House of Commons. The French lyrics remain unaltered.

Introduction Biography is the study of famous individuals, both living and dead. While there are biographical books on many famous individuals (both popular and academic), there are resources that encapsulate information about an individual and provide resources to learn more about him or her. These include biographical dictionaries and encyclopedias. Many resources will only detail the individuals the fit a certain category, such as women, latinos, Americans, writers, scientists, etc. Autobiographies are written by the subject. Care must be taken when conducting biographical research because the information may not be objective. Biographies written by critics may be unduly negative, while those written by fans may be too positive. To remedy this, find as many different sources as possible to balance out the viewpoints in the sources.

Gods, rulers and Sonny Bono
More from Rosa Hwang

Nestled within Washington, D.C.'s busy Dupont Circle, lies a circular plaque, a monument to the late Sonny Bono.
How odd - a memorial to Cher's ex-husband in the heart of America's seat of power, the U.S. Capitol.
To this day, it's unknown who commissioned the Bono memorial, but clearly, at least one person thought he should be remembered. And why not Washington? Monuments and statues line the streets and parks here, just as they do in any other capital.
But Americans remember and honour individuals to the point of devotional beatification. Everywhere you look in this city, there's a barrage of remembrances of people past: reminders of individuals who must have done spectacular things in their day.
There's the memorial to cigar maker Samuel Gompers on the corner of Massachusetts and 10th. Gompers is one of the founders of the American Federation of Labor.

Bacon, Francis
Bacon was the lord chancellor of England; his removal in 1621 makes for a most interesting story. For legal philosophers, however, Francis Bacon is most well known for his delineation of the principles of the inductive scientific method , which constituted a breakthrough in the approach to science. Bacon was the originator of the expression, "Knowledge is power."
Bagehot, Walter
Mr. Bagehot was a mathematician; a moral philosopher; a political economist; a trained, though not a practising, lawyer; a banker; a shipowner; and, from 1860 till his too early death in 1877, the editor and manager of the Economist . Primarily, however, Bagehot was a reader and critic of books. I have a number of Bagehot's books including:
