Last update: June 4 th The Duke of Argyll
(August 6, 1845 - May 2, 1914) U.K.
Canada's Governor General Here is a man who intended the "vice" in Viceroy in his own manner... Sir John Douglas Sutherland Campbell, Marquess of Lorne, 9th Duke of Argyll was born in Stafford House, London, England As the eldest son of the Argyll line of Campbells, Lord Lorne held the courtesy title of Marquess of Lorne from birth, and was heir to the title of Duke of Argyll from 21 months until he was 54. He received an excellent education at Edinburgh Academy, Eton, St. Andrews and Cambridge. For ten years before going to Canada, the Duke represented Argyllshire as a Liberal member of Parliament in the British House of Commons. The Duke loved men. But he was married to Queen Victoria's fourth daughter, Princess Louise, on March 21, 1871. The Queen thought her son in law could use getting toughened up, and arranged for his post in the wilds of her Domain as the 4th Governor General of Canada. He was appointed on October 7, 1878 and sworn in on November 25, 1878, in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
When Lord Lorne's appointment was announced, there was great excitement throughout Canada. For the first time, Canada would have a royal resident. The Canadian Prime Minister relaxed his busy campaign schedule to prepare for their arrival and to organize a special carriage and corps of guards to protect the princess.

People - Some Significant Figures In US and Canadian History, Entrepreneurs and Personalities
Introduction
This page contains very brief biographies of some significant figures in US and Canadian history, plus a few entrepreneurs and current personalities. It also includes some well known fictional characters. I have not included figures such as television and film stars and politicians who are likely be well known to British and other foreign visitors. This list is obviously far from complete and ranges from the sublime to the, well, shall we say... rather less sublime. In most cases more detailed information on an individual person is readily available from a variety of sources such as encyclopedias. Where no dates are given, I have so far been unsuccessful in my attempts to discover them.

Many published and unpublished military records serve to document the lives of those who served in Canada's armed forces, either as full-time professional soldiers, sailors or airmen, or in part-time militia or reserve service, or for periods of their lives in times of national emergency, as during the two World Wars. The concept of "personnel files," collections of official correspondence and reports, as well as information taken at the time of recruitment, medical data, and even material concerning an individual's life after leaving military service, all arranged around an individual name, did not come into widespread use in Canada until the South African War and again at the outbreak of the First World War. Most existing personnel files have been preserved in the National Archives of Canada and are invaluable sources for biographical and genealogical research. However, even without personnel files, military records can be used to build up a picture of an individual's life and service career. These five articles demonstrate how published and unpublished documents can be interwoven to build up a sophisticated and complete account. Northwest Ohio quarterly.

CBC NEWS ONLINE In December 1999, Pierre Elliott Trudeau was named top Canadian newsmaker of the 20th century. He finished ahead of prime ministers Mackenzie King, Lester Pearson, Wilfrid Laurier and Brian Mulroney, all of whom made the top ten. Think what you will of the century-ending poll, but no one will ever will remember the man as Pierre Who. At the turn of the century, he had been out of office 15 years. He had recently lost his son, Michel, who was killed in November 1998 at the age of 23 when an avalanche carried him into a glacial lake in British Columbia. At the memorial service weeks later, Trudeau looked gaunt, almost skeletal, in his grief. The following year, on October 18, Pierre Elliott Trudeau turned 80. In his prime, Trudeau was exciting, charismatic, sexy. He drove sports cars, wore capes, ascots and floppy hats, and always the signature red rose in his lapel. He slid down bannisters, canoed in white-water rapids, did pirouettes behind the Queen's back at Buckingham Palace. He made politics fashionable for the upbeat Sixties generation that emerged from the sleepy 1950s. He dated some of the most interesting women in the world — singer Barbra Streisand, movie star Margot Kidder, classical guitarist Liona Boyd. At the age of 52, he married Margaret Sinclair, the beautiful 22-year-old he had met while vacationing in Tahiti.

  • Born: c. 1768 Birthplace: Old Piqua (now Ohio) Died: 5 October 1813 (killed in battle) Best Known As: The native who "cursed" the presidency
A Shawnee chieftain, Tecumseh worked to unite other Indian tribes to oppose white expansion into the west in the early 1800s. That dream was crippled when U.S. troops (under future president William Henry Harrison ) defeated warriors led by Tecumseh's brother Tenskwatawa (known as The Prophet) at the 1811 Battle of Tippecanoe. Tecumseh was killed while fighting on the British side at the Battle of Thames (near what is now Detroit) during the War of 1812. After Tecumeh's death Tenskwatawa allegedly predicted that if Harrison was elected president he would die in office, and so would presidents elected every 20 years thereafter. This was supposed to be in retaliation for Tecumseh's death. While there is no proof The Prophet ever said such a thing, the prediction proved true for Harrison and every 20-year president through John Kennedy . Thus the "Curse of Tecumseh" became a part of popular lore... Civil War general William Tecumseh Sherman was named in honor of the Shawnee chief.
